How to contact unemployment at California EDD when you can't get anyone on the phone

I've been trying to figure out how to contact unemployment for the past two weeks and I am completely at my wit's end. My claim has been sitting in a weird limbo state — it says 'pending' on UI Online but there's no explanation, no flag, no issue listed anywhere on my account. I filed everything correctly, certified my weekly claims on time, reported my job search contacts like I'm supposed to, and still nothing. I need to actually talk to a human being at California EDD to find out what's holding things up, but every time I call the 1-800-300-5616 number I either get a busy signal immediately or I wait on hold for an hour and then the line just... disconnects. Is there some trick or strategy to actually getting through? Do I need to call at a specific time? Use a different number? File something in writing? I'm a single parent and these payments are not optional for me, I genuinely need to know how to contact unemployment and get this resolved. Any advice from people who've actually succeeded in talking to a real EDD rep would be appreciated so much right now.

calling edd is basically a part time job lol. i spent like 3 days straight hitting redial before i finally got through. no joke

That is both validating and terrifying. How early were you calling when you finally got through?

0 coins

Same experience here. The worst part is when you finally get to position 15 in the queue and then the system drops you. I wanted to throw my phone out the window.

There are actually a few different numbers depending on your situation. The main UI line is 1-800-300-5616 which is what most people call, but if you have a specific issue like a pending adjudication or identity verification hold, sometimes the representatives can see more detail than what shows on UI Online. Hours are Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. Calling right when they open at 8am tends to have slightly shorter waits but even then it's not guaranteed. Also make sure you're not calling on Mondays — that's when they get slammed because people couldn't reach anyone over the weekend.

Good to know about Mondays, I've actually been calling Mondays thinking I'd catch them fresh for the week. That explains a lot.

0 coins

I heard Tuesday or Wednesday mid-morning is supposed to be better but honestly I'm not sure that's actually true anymore, the whole system seems overwhelmed all the time

0 coins

Yeah the 'best time to call' advice changes because EDD staffing fluctuates. Wednesday mornings used to be a sweet spot but it really depends on the week. The main thing is definitely avoiding Mondays and the last few days of each month.

Okay so I was in almost the exact same boat — pending status, no explanation, couldn't get through by phone no matter what I tried. Someone on here mentioned a service called Claimyr that basically holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. I was pretty skeptical at first but I was desperate. Tried it at claimyr.com and got a callback with a real EDD rep within a couple hours. There's also a video showing how it works if you want to see it before signing up: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 — honestly it saved me so much time and stress.

Wait this is actually a real thing? I'm going to check it out right now. At this point I'll try anything.

0 coins

how does it work exactly? like do they call edd for you or what

0 coins

Basically it navigates the phone system and gets you into the queue, then calls you back when an agent picks up so you're not sitting there on hold yourself. Way less stressful than hitting redial for hours.

0 coins

I saw someone mention this before. Does it actually work consistently or just sometimes?

0 coins

The pending status with no flags can actually mean a few different things and some of them resolve on their own. If your employer contested your claim, it goes into adjudication — but adjudication usually shows some kind of notice. A plain 'pending' with nothing else sometimes just means they're processing a backlog and your claim hasn't been assigned to a rep yet. That said, if it's been more than 3 weeks with no movement and no communication from EDD, that's when you really need to push to get someone on the phone to check whether something got stuck internally.

It's been 18 days now. Should I be filing a complaint or anything in the meantime or just keep trying to call?

0 coins

At the 3-week mark I'd start documenting everything — screenshot your UI Online status with timestamps every few days. If this escalates to an appeal situation later, having that record helps. Also check your physical mail, sometimes EDD sends notices that don't show up in the online portal.

0 coins

This is good advice. I missed a notice because it got buried in my mail and by the time I opened it the response deadline had already passed. Check your mail religiously.

0 coins

Ugh the phone situation with California EDD is genuinely one of the most frustrating things I've ever dealt with. I get that they're understaffed but there has to be a better system than 'just keep calling until maybe you get lucky.' I work part time now (reported it correctly on my weekly claim) and I can't just sit on hold for three hours every day hoping someone picks up.

0 coins

RIGHT. like we have other things to do. we're unemployed not retired lol

0 coins

Yuki Sato

Exactly. I have to do job search activities AND somehow also spend my entire day trying to reach EDD. It's a lot.

0 coins

The irony of having to neglect your job search to spend all day calling EDD about your job search requirements is real

0 coins

One thing people often overlook: you can submit a contact request through Ask EDD at askedd.edd.ca.gov. It won't get you the same immediate response as a phone call, but for certain types of questions — especially if you just need to know the status of a pending claim — a written inquiry creates a paper trail and sometimes prompts someone to actually look at your account. Response times vary, I've heard anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, but it's worth doing alongside your phone attempts.

I didn't know Ask EDD could be used for claim status questions. I thought it was just for general questions about the program. Going to submit something today.

0 coins

I submitted an Ask EDD message once and got a response 3 weeks later that just said to call the main number. Super helpful lol

0 coins

Yeah the quality of Ask EDD responses varies a lot. Sometimes you get a real answer, sometimes you get a template response. But like I said, it creates a record and occasionally someone actually looks at your claim when processing the inquiry.

0 coins

I actually got my issue resolved through Ask EDD once. took like 10 days but they updated something on the backend and my payment went through. so it's not always useless

0 coins

Coming back to add — after I used Claimyr and actually got an EDD agent on the line, I found out my claim had a small discrepancy between what I put on my initial application and what my employer reported for my last day of work. It was literally a one-day difference but it had flagged something internally that wasn't showing anywhere on my UI Online account. The agent fixed it in like 5 minutes during the call. None of that would have been visible to me without actually talking to someone. That's why getting through by phone really does matter for some issues.

This is so useful to know. The fact that there can be internal flags that don't show on UI Online is genuinely wild. How would anyone ever figure that out otherwise.

0 coins

This happens more than people realize. UI Online shows you a simplified view of your claim status but EDD's internal systems have much more detail. Discrepancies between what you report and what the employer reports are one of the most common silent holds.

0 coins

wait so my employer could have reported something different and I would have no way of knowing until I finally get through to someone? that's really stressful

0 coins

my sister went through this exact thing last year. she literally tried to contact unemployment for almost a month before getting through. what finally worked for her was calling at exactly 8:00am on a wednesday and pressing through the menu options quickly without waiting for them to finish talking. like anticipating the menu. idk if that's still a thing but it worked for her

0 coins

The 'press ahead on menus' trick is real, if you've called enough times you basically memorize the menu options and can move through them faster which helps get into the queue slightly quicker

0 coins

i do this automatically now lol i know exactly which numbers to press and when

For anyone reading this thread who's also trying to figure out how to contact unemployment at California EDD — I want to confirm that Claimyr worked for me too. I found it after googling around and watching the demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I'd been trying to reach EDD about a job search requirement question (my industry has limited postings and I wasn't sure if my contacts were going to be accepted) and couldn't get through for over a week. Got connected to a real agent through Claimyr and she was actually really helpful and walked me through what qualified for my situation. Check out claimyr.com if you're stuck.

Yuki Sato

Okay I looked at the demo video and I'm going to try it. The idea of not having to physically sit on hold is appealing.

0 coins

Glad it worked for you. Sounds like a lot of people in this thread have had success with it

0 coins

Good to know it works for job search requirement questions too, not just claim status stuff

0 coins

I want to throw in something that helped me get organized before I finally got through to EDD. Have everything ready BEFORE you reach an agent: your claim ID, the last four of your SSN, the dates you're asking about, any employer info, and specific questions written out. When you've been on hold for an hour you go blank the second someone picks up and then you waste time fumbling around and the call gets awkward. Having notes in front of you makes the call way more productive.

0 coins

Yuki Sato

Author

This is such practical advice and I absolutely would have blanked. Going to write everything down now.

0 coins

100% this. EDD agents are usually working through a queue too so the more organized you are the more they can actually help you in one call. Otherwise you might handle one question and realize you have three more but you're already being wrapped up.

0 coins

I also recommend asking the agent for a reference number or their rep ID at the end of every call. That way if something doesn't get resolved you can reference that conversation when you call back.

0 coins

does anyone know if you can go in person to a california edd office? like physically show up and talk to someone? i've seen conflicting info about this

0 coins

EDD's public-facing offices (called America's Job Centers of California, or AJCCs) don't handle UI claim issues directly — they're more for job placement services and CalJOBS stuff. For actual unemployment claim issues you're mostly limited to phone and Ask EDD. There are some exceptions but generally walking in won't get your claim resolved.

0 coins

ugh that's what I was afraid of. felt like they designed it to be as hard to reach as possible

0 coins

I tried going in person once and they told me to call the 800 number. So yeah.

0 coins

okay so update from OP territory — does anyone know if weekly certifications keep getting processed even when a claim is in pending status? like am i losing those weeks or are they being held and will be paid once the claim clears?

0 coins

Yes, keep certifying every week no matter what. Your weekly certifications get logged even when the claim itself is pending. Once your claim is resolved and approved, EDD will release payment for all the weeks you certified during the pending period. If you stop certifying you could lose those weeks permanently.

0 coins

Yuki Sato

Author

Thank you for asking this because I was wondering the same thing and was scared to stop certifying but also wasn't sure if it was pointless while pending.

0 coins

This is correct — always certify. Missing a week creates a whole separate issue you'd have to resolve. The pending status applies to payment release, not to whether your certifications are being recorded.

0 coins

The thing that drives me insane about trying to contact unemployment through EDD is that there's no callback system that EDD itself offers. Like most government agencies and even most companies have 'press 1 to receive a callback' options now. EDD just... doesn't. So third party solutions end up filling that gap.

0 coins

It really is baffling that they don't have an official callback option yet. Meanwhile my dentist's office has had that for years.

0 coins

lmaooo right? a dental office has better customer service infrastructure than the state unemployment agency

0 coins

To be fair I think they've been trying to update their systems but the scale of California's unemployed population is genuinely enormous. Not excusing it, just... it's not a small problem to solve

0 coins

Something I learned the hard way: if you do get through to an EDD agent and they tell you something will be resolved in X days and it isn't, you have to call back and start from scratch — the next agent won't have notes from your previous call necessarily. So always ask them to add notes to your file and confirm what action they took. I thought my issue was handled after one call and it wasn't because nothing had actually been documented on their end.

0 coins

Yuki Sato

Author

This is really important, thank you. I had no idea you had to specifically ask them to document things.

0 coins

Asking them to read back what they noted in your file is a good practice. Annoying but it protects you.

0 coins

Seconding this. When I called through Claimyr the agent I reached was helpful but I made sure to ask what she was marking in my file before we hung up. Turned out she'd made a note but hadn't technically submitted the update yet — she caught it and submitted it while we were still talking.

0 coins

for what its worth I also tried the ask edd route and called multiple times before I found something that worked. just want OP to know it's not just you, this is like... universally the most frustrating part of dealing with california edd for anyone. how to contact unemployment is literally one of the top searched things about EDD for a reason

0 coins

Yuki Sato

Author

Honestly that's a little comforting in a 'misery loves company' way. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong.

0 coins

nope you're not doing anything wrong the system is just broken in this specific way

0 coins

just want to give an update for anyone following — i had a similar pending situation a few months back and it did eventually resolve. took almost 4 weeks but once an agent actually looked at my account it was fixed same day. the waiting is brutal but keep certifying, keep trying to call, and use whatever tools help you get through (i used claimyr too fwiw — claimyr.com — wish i'd found it sooner). you will get through this.

0 coins

Yuki Sato

This is really reassuring to hear. Thank you for coming back to share. I'm going to keep at it.

0 coins

four weeks though?? that's so stressful. glad it worked out for you

0 coins

The 'fixed same day once someone looks at it' thing is so common. The backlog creates these massive delays and then the actual resolution is like 5 minutes. The whole bottleneck is just getting through.

UPDATE: I finally got through!! Used Claimyr after seeing it mentioned in this thread and got a callback from an actual EDD representative this morning. Turns out there was an internal discrepancy — my former employer had reported my separation date differently than what I put on my application. The agent corrected it and said my payments should process within 5-7 business days. I am SO relieved. Thank you everyone in this thread who gave advice and recommendations. If you're trying to figure out how to contact unemployment and can't get through the normal way, seriously try claimyr.com. It actually works.

0 coins

So glad to hear this!! That employer date discrepancy thing is exactly what happened to me too. Seems like it's more common than EDD lets on.

0 coins

Great outcome. And just a reminder to keep certifying your weekly claims during those 5-7 days. Everything you've certified should get released together once the hold clears.

0 coins

Congrats! And good call documenting everything you discussed with the agent. If the payment doesn't come through in that timeframe you'll have a clear reference point to cite when you follow up.

Love a resolution post! This thread is going to help a lot of people who are googling how to contact unemployment at California EDD. Glad you got it sorted.
