Are California EDD unemployment offices open for walk-ins?

So I've been trying to figure out if I can just walk into a California EDD office to get help with my claim in person. My weekly certifications keep showing a weird status and I can't get anyone on the phone to explain what's going on. I've driven past the local EDD office a couple times but there's never any clear signage about whether they're actually open to the public or by appointment only. Does anyone know the current situation with EDD office walk-ins in 2025? Are unemployment offices open for in-person visits or do they only do appointments now? I really need to talk to someone about my UI claim because the online portal isn't giving me any useful information about why my payments are delayed.

Most California EDD offices are technically open but they switched to a limited appointment-based system and they don't really advertise walk-ins anymore. You'd need to call and schedule something or use the online appointment scheduler on the EDD website. That said even getting THROUGH to schedule an appointment is its own nightmare lol

0 coins

Of course it's another hoop to jump through. Do you know if the appointment scheduler actually works or is it also broken half the time?

0 coins

The online scheduler works okay but availability is really limited in most counties. Sometimes you're looking at 3-4 weeks out before you can get a slot.

0 coins

From what I understand the current setup as of 2025 is that EDD field offices handle in-person appointments for things like identity verification and certain adjudication issues that can't be resolved online. They're not set up for general walk-in questions anymore. Your best bet is to call the main UI line at 1-800-300-5616 first to find out if your specific issue even requires an in-person visit or if it can be handled over the phone.

0 coins

That's actually really helpful context, thank you. My issue is a payment hold that's been sitting there for almost 2 weeks with no explanation in UI Online.

0 coins

payment holds are so frustrating omg edd never explains anything

0 coins

Payment holds that show no explanation in UI Online are often adjudication flags triggered automatically. An agent can usually tell you exactly what triggered it in about 5 minutes on the phone - getting THROUGH is the hard part.

0 coins

Okay so I went through something almost identical a few months ago and spent like 4 days straight trying to get through on the phone. Kept getting the 'we cannot take your call' message and getting disconnected. Someone in another thread mentioned Claimyr and honestly it changed everything for me. You basically use claimyr.com and it navigates the EDD phone system and holds your place in line then calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me from losing my mind. There's even a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - might be worth checking out if the phone thing is also giving you trouble

0 coins

Wait this actually works? I've been trying to call for 5 days now and keep getting that same message. I'll check it out.

0 coins

is this legit? sounds kinda too good to be true tbh

0 coins

I was skeptical too but yeah it's legit. Got a callback from an actual EDD agent and got my issue sorted out. Way less stressful than refreshing the phone line every 20 minutes.

0 coins

gonna bookmark this for when i inevitably need it lol

0 coins

THE OFFICES ARE OPEN BUT THEY WILL TURN YOU AWAY IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN APPOINTMENT. I learned this the hard way. Drove 40 minutes to my nearest EDD office, waited outside for 20 minutes, and was told by security that they only see people with confirmed appointments for specific services. Nobody tells you this!! The EDD website is so vague about it. I was so frustrated.

0 coins

Oh no, I'm glad you warned me before I did the same thing. Did you ever get your issue resolved?

0 coins

Eventually yes but it took forever. Had to schedule an appointment online and wait 3 weeks. Whatever your issue is do NOT rely on walking in.

0 coins

This is such a common trap. They really should have clearer signage or at least update the website to say appointments required.

0 coins

To clarify what's actually going on with EDD offices in 2025: California EDD field offices provide in-person services but primarily for document-related needs like ID verification for identity holds, or for claimants with accessibility needs. For general claim questions including payment holds, adjudication status, and weekly certification issues, the phone line and UI Online are the intended channels. If you have an identity verification hold specifically, you can often resolve that faster in person IF you can get an appointment. But for a payment hold without explanation, you really need an agent on the phone who can pull up your full claim record and see the internal notes.

0 coins

This makes a lot of sense. My hold doesn't seem to be identity-related since my account shows verified. I'll focus on getting someone on the phone.

0 coins

Good clarification. Also worth noting - if your UI Online account shows your identity as verified but there's still a hold, it could be an employer dispute or an issue with your wages reported. Those definitely need a phone agent.

0 coins

Employer disputes are SO common and they never notify you properly when one is filed against your claim. Had one sitting on my claim for weeks before I found out.

i literally just walked into my local edd office last tuesday and they let me in?? maybe it depends on the county or office? i didn't have an appt but they put me on a list and i waited about an hour and a half and got to talk to someone

0 coins

Interesting! Which county if you don't mind me asking? Maybe I should just try it at my local one.

0 coins

I'm in Sacramento county. idk if other offices are different but mine seemed pretty chill about it

0 coins

Ugh mine was San Diego and they were NOT accepting walk-ins at all. Really does seem to vary by location.

0 coins

This tracks - EDD field offices operate with some regional discretion. Some offices in less dense areas may accommodate walk-ins when their schedule allows. Worth calling ahead to confirm before making the drive though.

0 coins

honestly even if you do get into an office the staff there can't always see everything in your claim the same way a phone agent can. my cousin went in person and they basically told her she still needed to call the main line for her specific issue. kind of pointless trip

0 coins

That's a good point, I hadn't thought about the fact that office staff might have different system access.

0 coins

This is actually true for some claim types. In-person staff at field offices handle certain things really well but complex adjudication issues often need to go through the main claims center agents who have full access to your file.

0 coins

have you tried the EDD chat feature? i know it sounds useless but sometimes you can at least get confirmation of what TYPE of hold is on your claim even if they can't fully resolve it in chat. then at least you know what you're dealing with when you do get someone on the phone

0 coins

I didn't even know there was a chat feature. Where do you access that from?

0 coins

its through UI Online when you're logged in, look for the Ask EDD option. it's more of a FAQ bot but sometimes real agents respond to the messages. hit or miss.

0 coins

Ask EDD is pretty limited but you can submit a message and sometimes get a response within a few days. I'd use it as a supplement to calling not a replacement.

0 coins

Just to add some practical info - the main California EDD unemployment phone number is 1-800-300-5616 and the hours are 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. The absolute best time to call is right at 8am when the lines open. Still not guaranteed but your odds are way better than calling mid-day. Calling after 4pm is basically pointless in my experience - they start cutting off the queue.

0 coins

Thank you! I've been calling around 10am which might explain why I keep getting blocked. I'll set an alarm for 8am tomorrow.

0 coins

the 8am thing is real, confirmed from personal experience. first 15 minutes after opening is your window

0 coins

i tried calling at 8am for like a week straight and only got through twice lol. edd phone system is a special kind of hell

0 coins

Random question but does anyone know if the EDD offices are also closed on state holidays? I've been trying to plan when to go and I can't find a clear calendar anywhere on the EDD website

0 coins

Yes, EDD offices follow California state holiday schedules. If it's a state holiday the offices are closed and the phone lines are also closed. The EDD website does have a contact page that lists closures but it's not always updated far in advance.

0 coins

ugh okay thanks. of course the info is buried somewhere

0 coins

Also worth knowing - the UI Online portal itself is available 24/7 for things like submitting weekly certifications and checking status. Even on holidays you can still access your account online.

0 coins

Coming back to add - I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to follow up that my sister also used it recently for a different EDD issue (she had a disqualification notice she didn't understand) and she also got through to an agent same day. So it's not just for payment holds. If you're stuck trying to reach EDD for any reason it's worth looking at. claimyr.com has the details and that video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows exactly what the process looks like.

0 coins

okay the video actually made me feel better about it. seeing it in action is reassuring

0 coins

I actually tried it after seeing your first comment and it worked - got a callback this morning! The agent told me my hold is from an employer dispute I had no idea about. Feels so much better knowing what the issue actually is now.

0 coins

Wait it actually worked for you?? I'm going to try this for my lingering issue that I've been putting off dealing with for months

0 coins

For anyone reading this thread who is dealing with a payment hold specifically - here are the most common reasons EDD places holds that have no visible explanation in UI Online: (1) employer filed a protest to your claim, (2) your wages couldn't be verified with the base period employer, (3) there's a discrepancy between your reported work search activities and what was expected, or (4) an automated fraud flag was triggered. None of these show you a specific reason in the portal - you literally have to talk to an agent. The hold won't resolve itself without intervention in most cases.

0 coins

This list is incredibly helpful. Based on what the agent told me this morning it's #1 - employer dispute. Now I need to figure out what my options are.

0 coins

For an employer dispute you'll want to request any correspondence related to the protest and prepare documentation of your separation circumstances. You may need to submit a written statement to EDD depending on the nature of the dispute.

0 coins

Employer disputes can unfortunately extend your wait significantly. I'd document everything from your separation now while it's fresh - dates, communications, anything that supports your side of the story.

0 coins

this whole thread is exactly why i just accepted a job i didn't really want because dealing with edd was too stressful. three weeks of trying to navigate the system and i gave up. i know that's not helpful but i feel seen reading this

0 coins

oof i feel this deeply. the system is designed to make you give up i swear

0 coins

I'm sorry you went through that. For what it's worth most people who push through do eventually get their claims resolved. But I completely understand - the friction is real and exhausting.

0 coins

This is exactly my fear. But reading this thread and actually getting answers today has given me more hope. Don't give up if you're ever in this situation again.

One thing I want to add for anyone wondering about are unemployment offices open for specific services - the EDD website has an office locator at edd.ca.gov where you can find your nearest field office and it does list the services available at each location. Some offices have expanded hours or specific days for certain services. Always worth checking the specific page for your county's office before assuming anything.

0 coins

good tip, the office locator is actually pretty useful

0 coins

just checked mine and it says appointments required for all services. so the walk-in thing really does vary

0 coins

interesting bc my Sacramento office isn't listed that way but maybe they updated it. i'll double check

0 coins

Does anyone know if EDD offices can help with appeals? I have a disqualification I want to fight and I don't know if I need to go in person or if I can handle the whole appeal process by mail or online

0 coins

EDD appeals are handled by the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB) which is a separate entity from EDD field offices. You file your appeal online through UI Online or by mail. The hearing itself is typically conducted by phone with an administrative law judge. You don't need to go to an EDD field office for the appeal process.

0 coins

oh wow I had no idea they were separate. that's actually good news because scheduling an office visit seemed so daunting

0 coins

Important: you only have 30 days from the date on your disqualification notice to file the appeal. Don't wait. The 30 days goes fast especially when you're trying to figure out the process.

0 coins

submitting my appeal RIGHT NOW thank you for the urgency check

0 coins

kind of off topic but does anyone else find the EDD website confusing to navigate? i feel like every time i try to find something specific i end up going in circles and finding outdated pages

0 coins

YES the website is a disaster. some pages still reference pandemic-era programs that don't exist anymore

0 coins

Google is honestly better for finding specific EDD info than the EDD website itself. Just add 'California EDD 2025' to your search and you usually get to the right page faster.

0 coins

The UI Online portal itself is fine once you're logged in but the public-facing edd.ca.gov site is genuinely difficult to navigate. I think they're in the middle of redesigning it.

0 coins

Circling back to the original question about whether unemployment offices are open - the short answer for 2025 is: yes they are open, but walk-in service is limited or unavailable at many locations, appointments are preferred or required, and not all claim issues can be resolved in person anyway. For most UI claim problems the phone line remains the most effective channel even though it's frustratingly hard to get through. In-person is most useful for identity verification holds, accessibility accommodations, or if you have complex documents to submit.

0 coins

This is a great summary. Saving this thread for future reference.

0 coins

wish i had found this thread 3 weeks ago honestly

0 coins

should be pinned honestly

0 coins

UPDATE on my situation since I mentioned the San Diego office earlier - I used Claimyr like someone suggested in this thread and finally got through to an EDD agent after weeks of failed calls. Turns out my claim had a wage verification hold that was completely resolvable once I talked to someone. The agent submitted the correction while I was on the phone. Genuinely could not believe it was handled in one call after all that struggle. For anyone still dealing with hold issues seriously look into claimyr.com - the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 walks you through it.

0 coins

So glad it worked out!! And yes completely agree - getting an actual agent on the phone made all the difference for me too.

0 coins

okay i'm actually going to try this now. been putting it off because I assumed it wouldn't work but multiple people in this thread had success

0 coins

this thread delivered honestly. came in confused about offices being open and leaving with multiple actual solutions
