Where can I withdraw money from my California EDD unemployment card for free?
So I just got my California EDD debit card in the mail and I have no idea where I can actually take money out without getting charged a fee. The card came with basically zero instructions about ATMs or anything like that. I've been unemployed for almost 6 weeks now and every dollar matters so I really don't want to be losing $3-5 every time I need cash. Does anyone know which ATMs or banks let you withdraw from the EDD prepaid debit card for free? Is there a specific network I should be looking for? I tried googling it but got a bunch of conflicting info. Any help appreciated.

The California EDD debit card is issued through Bank of America so you can withdraw for free at any Bank of America ATM. Just look for the BofA logo. Also there are free withdrawals available through the Allpoint ATM network which has like 55,000+ locations across the US - you can find them inside CVS, Walgreens, Target, Costco, and a lot of other retailers. Download the Allpoint app or check their website to find the nearest one to you.

AuthorOh wow I didn't know about Allpoint at all! There's a CVS literally two blocks from me so this is super helpful. Is there a limit on how many free withdrawals I get per month?

I believe you get one free Bank of America ATM withdrawal per benefit period deposit, and Allpoint withdrawals through those partner retailers should be free. But double check the fee schedule that came with your card or look it up on the prepaid card website to confirm current terms.

Allpoint is definitely the move if you don't live near a BofA. I used it at a Target near me and had zero issues, no fees at all.

just use the BofA app to find ATMs near you, works fine

AuthorI don't have a BofA account though, does the app still work for finding ATMs if I'm just using the EDD prepaid card?

yeah you dont need an account just use it to find locations

One thing I want to flag - a lot of people don't realize you can also just go into a Bank of America branch and do a free over-the-counter cash withdrawal directly with a teller. No ATM needed, no fees. This is helpful if you need a larger amount since ATMs sometimes have daily withdrawal limits around $400-$1000 depending on the machine. Just bring your EDD debit card and a valid ID.

AuthorWait really?? I didn't know you could do that without having a BofA account. So I just walk in with my EDD card and they'll give me cash?

Exactly. The EDD prepaid Visa debit card is treated like any Visa card at the teller window. Just tell them you want a cash withdrawal and hand them the card and your ID. Works great if you need more than the ATM limit allows.

THIS. I did this last month when I needed a bigger chunk of cash and it was totally seamless. The teller didn't even blink.

does this work at any branch or just certain ones

Honestly the whole EDD debit card system is SO frustrating. I spent weeks trying to figure out the fee structure and kept getting conflicting answers when I called California EDD. Every time I called I either got disconnected or sat on hold for literally hours. At one point I was dealing with a question about my claim AND the card fees and couldn't reach anyone. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you actually get through to a live EDD agent on the phone. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I was skeptical but it actually connected me to someone who answered both my card question and my claim status question at the same time. Way better than the endless hold loop.

AuthorUgh yes the hold times are insane. I haven't even tried calling about the card stuff because I've already been on hold twice about my claim adjudication. I'll check out that Claimyr link, thanks.

wait does claimyr actually work? I've been trying to reach EDD for two weeks about a totally different issue and can't get through to save my life

It worked for me, yeah. Took less time than my usual attempts. Worth trying when you're desperate.

I was also skeptical but my neighbor used it and said the same thing. Sometimes you just need to get a live person on the line to sort things out.

To answer your original question more completely - here's basically the full list of ways to avoid fees with your California EDD debit card: 1. Bank of America ATMs - free (check fee schedule for how many per period) 2. Allpoint network ATMs - free, found at CVS, Walgreens, Target, Costco, Safeway, and many more 3. Bank of America teller cash advance - free with ID 4. Cash back at grocery stores / retailers when you make a purchase - usually free and a great option for smaller amounts The cash back option at checkout is criminally underused. Next time you're at Walmart, Kroger, Safeway etc just add cash back to your debit purchase and you get cash with zero fee. Sometimes limits are $40-$100 per transaction but it adds up.

AuthorThe cash back at checkout idea is genius honestly. I grocery shop every week anyway so I could just get cash back then. No extra trip needed.

yep cash back at walmart is what i do every week, never paid a fee once

Just make sure the store accepts Visa debit with cash back - most do but occasionally you hit one that doesn't or their system is down. Good backup to know about Allpoint too.

This is a really good summary. The fee schedule on the actual BofA prepaid card site is confusing as heck so having it spelled out like this helps a lot.

ok kinda random but this thread reminded me of when I first got my EDD card years ago and had NO idea what I was doing. I accidentally used an out of network ATM like 4 times before I figured it out and lost like $12 in fees. I was already stressed about money and that just made it worse. The system really should explain this stuff better when they mail the card out. Anyway glad people are sharing this info here.

AuthorHonestly same, the info that came with my card was basically useless. This forum has been way more helpful.

yeah EDD could stand to include a simple one-pager with the card explaining the free ATM options. But here we are lol

Another thing - if you have a checking account at a bank or credit union you can transfer your EDD card balance to your own bank account through the BofA prepaid card portal online. Then just use your regular bank account and ATM for free withdrawals like normal. Some people find this easier to manage than using the EDD card directly everywhere.
0 coins
Alfredo Lugo
AuthorOh interesting! Is that transfer free or does it cost something?
0 coins
Kaitlyn Jenkins
There may be a small transfer fee depending on the method - check the fee schedule on the prepaid card website. Some transfer options are free, some have a small charge. But once the money is in your regular bank account you avoid any future card fees entirely.

This is a good long-term strategy. I always transferred mine to my credit union and just managed everything from there. Much simpler.

WAIT does the edd card work at credit union ATMs?? asking for a friend who has a small local credit union
0 coins
Sydney Torres
It's a Visa prepaid debit card so it works at any ATM that accepts Visa - but there may be a fee unless the credit union is in the Allpoint network. Check if your credit union participates in Allpoint or Co-op ATM networks, many do.

ok gonna check that tysm

Don't forget you can check your EDD prepaid card balance and transaction history online or through the BofA app without any account login - just register the card at the prepaid card site. Helps you track fees so you know if you're getting charged and where. I'd also sign up for text alerts for each transaction so nothing sneaks up on you.

Alfredo Lugo
AuthorGood call on the text alerts, setting those up right now actually.

The transaction alerts are super useful. I caught a random ATM fee that way and was able to switch to Allpoint going forward.

tbh the whole reason i ended up needing to call edd wasn't even about the card it was about my weekly certification getting flagged but I couldn't get through for days. Eventually used Claimyr to get a live agent and they sorted it out in like 10 minutes. Felt so dumb that I'd been stressing for a week over something that quick to fix once you can actually talk to someone
0 coins
Alfredo Lugo
AuthorUgh yes - I have a separate issue with my claim being in adjudication and THAT is the thing I really need to talk to someone about. Maybe I'll try Claimyr for that too.

Lourdes Fox
Definitely worth it for adjudication stuff especially. Those can drag on forever if nobody flags them internally.

adjudication delays are the worst. mine sat for 5 weeks before I finally got through to someone and it turned out there was just a simple employer response issue that could have been fixed way earlier

does the edd card expire? like if my claim ends will the money still be on the card
0 coins
Tasia Synder
Yes the card has an expiration date printed on it. Any remaining balance should be accessible until that date. If the card expires while you still have funds, contact Bank of America prepaid services to get a replacement card with the balance transferred.

ok good to know thanks

Also important - if you lose your card or it's stolen, call the number on the back immediately to report it and get a replacement. EDD prepaid cards have fraud protection like other debit cards.

for what its worth i always just went straight to BofA teller when I needed cash. zero fees and the people there were always helpful. never had any issues even though I dont have a BofA checking account. just needed my EDD card and my drivers license

AuthorMultiple people have said this now so I'm definitely going to try it. I've been nervous about walking into a bank branch without an account there but sounds like it's totally normal.

One thing nobody has mentioned - some convenience stores and gas stations have ATMs that look like they might be free but are definitely not. Always look for the Allpoint logo specifically or confirm it's an actual Bank of America ATM before withdrawing. The generic white-box ATMs at bodegas and gas stations will charge you $3-4 minimum. Learned that the hard way early in my claim period.

Selena Bautista
yes!!!! those random ATMs are robbery. always check for Allpoint logo

AuthorGood warning, noted. I'll be checking for that logo from now on.

Coming back to add something since this thread helped me too when I found it - after you find your free ATM situation sorted, make sure you're still keeping up with your weekly certifications and job search requirements. I know that sounds unrelated but I've seen people get so caught up in the logistics stuff that they miss a certification week and trigger an adjudication issue. California EDD is pretty strict about the weekly filing schedule.
0 coins
Alfredo Lugo
AuthorOh gosh good reminder, I've been so focused on figuring out the money access stuff. My next certification is due in two days, I have it on my calendar but still.

Mohamed Anderson
Set a phone alarm too as a backup. Missing even one week can cause headaches.
0 coins
Natalia Stone
The certification schedule is really unforgiving if you miss it. Two missed weeks can look like you're no longer interested in benefits and trigger all kinds of review flags.

random q - can someone else use my edd card to withdraw money for me? like if I'm sick and can't get to the ATM can my spouse go?

Sydney Torres
Technically the card is issued in your name only and you're supposed to be the only one using it - it functions like a personal debit card with your name on it. However cash back at point of sale with a PIN is something you'd need to do yourself. I'd be careful about letting others use it as it could create issues if flagged.

ok that makes sense, was just curious. guess I'd do an online transfer to a joint account if needed

This whole thread should honestly be pinned. I've been on unemployment twice and both times I had NO idea about Allpoint or the teller option. Just fumbled around with random ATMs and paid fees I didn't need to. Wish I'd found this sooner.

AuthorSeriously, the info gap around the EDD card logistics is huge. Glad I asked even though I felt dumb not knowing.

There are no dumb questions when it comes to EDD stuff. The system makes everything harder than it needs to be.

And for anything that requires actually talking to EDD directly - like adjudication holds, payment issues, or claim questions - remember Claimyr at claimyr.com if you can't get through by regular phone. It's been a lifesaver for a lot of people in this community when the standard hold times are unbearable.
