What bank does California EDD unemployment use for benefit payments?
So I've been trying to figure out exactly what bank California EDD uses for unemployment payments and I'm honestly going in circles trying to get a straight answer. My benefits got approved last week and I still haven't seen anything hit my account. I know EDD has some kind of payment card situation but I'm not sure if they do direct deposit to a regular bank or if everything goes through their own system. My neighbor said something about a Bank of America prepaid card but my coworker who filed last year said he got his money deposited straight to his Chase account. Now I'm sitting here not knowing if I should be waiting on a card in the mail or if my direct deposit info I submitted is even going to work. Can someone explain how EDD actually sends out payments and what bank is involved? I have rent due in 9 days and I really need to understand what's happening with my money.

Ok so let me break this down because there's actually two different things happening here and a lot of people get confused. California EDD uses Bank of America for their prepaid debit card program - it's called the EDD Debit Card and it's issued through Bank of America. HOWEVER you also have the option to set up direct deposit to whatever bank account you already have. So your neighbor AND your coworker are both kind of right. If you didn't set up direct deposit in your UI Online account, EDD will automatically send a Bank of America debit card to your mailing address. If you DID set up direct deposit, the money goes straight to your personal bank account - Chase, Wells Fargo, credit union, whatever you have.

Authorok that actually makes so much more sense. I think I did put in my direct deposit info during the application but I'm not 100% sure I finished that step. How do I check if it went through?

Log into UI Online at unemployment.edd.ca.gov and go to the Payment Activity section. There should also be a Payment Options area in your profile where you can see whether direct deposit is set up or if you're defaulting to the debit card.

confirming this is correct. Bank of America handles all the EDD debit cards but direct deposit bypasses that entirely and goes through whatever financial institution you use

The EDD debit card from Bank of America is honestly kind of a pain if you've never had one before. They mail it to you within 7-10 business days of your first payment being issued. So even if your payment is approved and sent, you might be waiting on the physical card to arrive before you can actually access funds. One thing people don't know - you can use the card at any ATM but Bank of America ATMs are fee-free. Other ATMs will charge you.

wait does the card come already activated or do you have to call and activate it when it arrives?

Mohamed Anderson
You have to activate it. There's a number on the sticker on the front of the card when it arrives. Or you can activate through the Bank of America EDD card website. Don't throw away that sticker by mistake lol

I made that mistake the first time I got the card... threw away the sticker immediately thinking it was junk and then couldn't figure out how to activate it for like two days

If you're still unsure whether your direct deposit went through and you need to confirm before rent is due, your best bet is to actually talk to someone at EDD directly. I know calling EDD feels impossible but I had luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it basically gets you through to an actual EDD agent without sitting on hold forever. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I used it when I had a payment issue and got answers within the same day instead of waiting weeks trying to get through the regular phone line.

AuthorI've heard of Claimyr before but wasn't sure if it actually worked. Did they help you resolve a payment question specifically or was it a different issue?

Mine was about a payment that showed as issued in UI Online but never showed up anywhere - no card, no direct deposit. The agent I talked to was able to see exactly where the payment was and why it got stuck. Turns out my direct deposit routing number had a typo. Got it sorted fast once I reached a real person.

been trying to call EDD for literally 3 weeks about my bank info and keep getting the "we cannot accept your call" message. might actually try this

Just to add some clarity on the Bank of America piece - the official name is the EDD Prepaid Debit Card, issued by Bank of America. When you receive payments this way the funds come from EDD through Bank of America's system. The card has a routing number and account number associated with it just like a bank account does. Some landlords will accept direct payments from the card, and you can also transfer money from the debit card to your own bank account through the Bank of America ReliaCard portal or by calling the number on the back.

Is there a fee to transfer from the EDD card to your own bank? I've been just withdrawing cash at ATMs but that seems annoying

Bruno Simmons
There can be fees depending on how many transfers you do per month. First transfer is usually free then there may be a small fee after that. Check the cardholder agreement that comes with the card - it lists all the fees.

I just set up direct deposit from day one to avoid dealing with the card altogether. If you're starting a new claim definitely do that first thing in UI Online before your first payment processes

hold on I'm confused. My friend told me EDD switched away from Bank of America for the debit cards? She said something about them changing payment processors. Is the Bank of America thing still current or is this old info??

Tasia Synder
As of 2025 Bank of America is still the issuer for EDD debit cards in California. Your friend might be thinking of a different state's unemployment system or maybe mixing up information. California has had this arrangement with BofA for a long time.

Bruno Simmons
Yeah I can confirm BofA is still current for California EDD. Nothing has changed on that front recently.

ok good, I was about to go down a rabbit hole trying to find new card info lol. Thanks for clarifying

OP if you have rent due in 9 days you should also know that the first payment after approval can sometimes take longer than expected. EDD has to issue the payment, then if it's going to a Bank of America card the card has to be mailed, then you have to activate it. That whole chain can eat up 2 weeks easy. Direct deposit is MUCH faster - usually 2-3 business days after EDD releases the payment. So if your direct deposit is actually set up correctly you're probably fine. If you're defaulting to the card... you might want to have a backup plan for rent.

AuthorThis is exactly what I was worried about. I just logged into UI Online and I can see direct deposit IS set up with my correct bank info so hopefully I'm in the good category

Zane Gray
Oh good! Yeah if direct deposit is confirmed in your UI Online account you should see the funds within a few business days of EDD releasing the payment. Check your Payment Activity to see what date they actually issued it.

direct deposit is absolutely the way to go. I switched from the card after my first claim and it's so much better

Something nobody mentioned yet - make sure your bank account you set up for direct deposit actually accepts ACH transfers from government agencies. Most regular checking accounts do but some accounts have restrictions. Also double check that you entered the routing number and NOT the account number for the first field. I saw someone mix those up and wonder why nothing was depositing for weeks.

Natalia Stone
Authoroh man I definitely want to triple check that now. I feel like I was rushing through the application

Go to UI Online, click on your profile or account settings, find Payment Options and you should be able to see the last 4 digits of the account on file. Verify those match your actual account.

I've been dealing with a nightmare situation where EDD shows my payment as ISSUED but my Bank of America card shows zero balance and it's been 8 days. Called BofA and they said they don't see any pending deposits from EDD. Called EDD and can't get through. Does anyone know if there's a lag between when EDD marks something as issued and when BofA actually gets the money??
0 coins
Tasia Synder
There can be a 1-3 business day lag between EDD showing issued and BofA actually crediting it. But 8 days is definitely too long. You need to talk to EDD directly about this - they can see exactly where in the payment chain the money is stuck.

I've been trying to call for days and can't get through. Someone earlier mentioned Claimyr - I just looked it up at claimyr.com and watched the demo video they have. Might be worth trying because I need this money yesterday

Yes that's exactly the situation Claimyr is good for. Getting through to EDD so an agent can actually trace where your payment went. Check the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 and hopefully you can get this resolved quickly.

Quick question that's sort of related - if I close the bank account I have set up for direct deposit while I'm still on a claim, what happens to payments EDD tries to send? Do they bounce back and reissue automatically or does it just disappear into the void??
0 coins
Bruno Simmons
When a direct deposit is rejected by your bank (like if the account is closed), the payment should bounce back to EDD and they reissue it to your Bank of America EDD debit card. But this process can take 2-4 weeks. EDD should also send you a notice. Do not close your bank account mid-claim without updating your payment info in UI Online first!

Landon Morgan
yikes ok I was thinking of switching banks but I will absolutely update my info first. Thanks for that warning

Selena Bautista
I made this mistake once (not closed but I switched to a new account number at the same bank without updating EDD). Took almost 3 weeks for the rejected payment to come back and reissue to the BofA card. Not fun.

Honestly the whole EDD payment system is confusing by design I swear. Why do they even have TWO systems? Just do direct deposit for everyone or just do the card, not both. I've been on unemployment three times now and every single time I have to re-figure out which system I'm using because my situation changed. The Bank of America card is fine but their customer service is terrible if you have an issue with it.

Mohamed Anderson
The dual system exists partly because not everyone has a bank account. The BofA card functions as a banking option for people who are unbanked. It's actually a federal requirement that benefit payments be accessible to people without traditional bank accounts.

Maggie Martinez
ok I guess that makes sense. Still annoying but I understand the reasoning now

Natalia Stone
Authordidn't realize that was the reason - makes more sense now actually

Adding one more important thing about the Bank of America EDD card that bit me: the card expires every 3 years. If you had a card from a previous claim and you're starting a new claim, your old card might still be valid and EDD will load payments onto the existing card number. Check your old card expiration date before assuming you need a new one. Saved me like 10 days of waiting once I figured that out.

Aileen Rodriguez
Oh wow I did not know this! I threw my old card away after my last claim. Guess I'd get a new one automatically?
0 coins
Selena Bautista
Yeah if the old card is expired or they can't locate it in their system, you'll get a new one mailed. But if the old card is still valid in BofA's system it should auto-reload. Might be worth calling BofA EDD card support to check before waiting for mail.

can i use the EDD bank of america card at any store or is it only for ATMs? also can I use it to pay bills online?
0 coins
Mohamed Anderson
Yes it works like a Visa debit card anywhere Visa is accepted. You can use it for in-store purchases, online purchases, bill pay - pretty much anything a regular debit card can do. Just make sure you know your balance before using it somewhere that does a hold (like gas stations or hotels).

Ellie Perry
oh nice that's way more useful than I thought. I was picturing it as like a weird government voucher thing
0 coins
Tasia Synder
Yeah it's basically a full Visa prepaid card. The main limitation is international use can have fees and some merchants that require a physical bank don't accept prepaid cards but that's rare

UPDATE: I just checked my bank account and my first EDD payment came through! Direct deposit hit overnight and it's showing in my account this morning. So for anyone wondering - once direct deposit is properly set up and EDD releases the payment it really does come through quickly. Huge relief with rent coming up. Thanks everyone for explaining how the whole Bank of America / direct deposit system works.

For anyone landing on this thread from search - the quick summary: California EDD uses Bank of America for their prepaid debit card (called the EDD Debit Card). This is the default payment method. You can also choose direct deposit to any US bank account through UI Online. Direct deposit is faster (2-3 days vs up to 2 weeks for card delivery). Set your payment preference in UI Online as soon as your claim is approved.

Final update from me - used Claimyr to finally get through to an EDD agent about my missing payment. The agent found that my payment was stuck in a manual review queue due to a flag on my claim. Got it resolved and the money showed up on my BofA card 2 days later. Seriously would have been waiting weeks if I hadn't been able to talk to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com and their demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you're dealing with anything similar.

So glad it worked out! Those manual review holds are so frustrating because there's no notification - you just see it as issued and wonder where the money went.

Happy to hear it got resolved! And good info for others - if a payment shows issued in UI Online but hasn't appeared after 3-4 business days, that's when you really need to escalate and talk to someone at EDD directly.
