What to do after unemployment runs out - California EDD options when UI benefits end
So I hit a wall last week that I honestly didn't think would come this fast. My California EDD unemployment benefits ran out after the full 26 weeks and I have no idea what happens next or what I'm supposed to do. I work in logistics and got laid off back when my company lost a major contract. I've been filing my weekly certifications every Sunday like clockwork, doing my three job search activities every week and logging everything in my CalJOBS account like they told me to, but I still haven't found anything and now my claim just shows zero balance remaining. I went to log into UI Online to certify this week and it just wouldn't let me move forward. No explanation, no notice in the mail yet, nothing. I didn't even get a warning that I was running low on weeks until literally the last one. I'm completely lost on what options I might have left. Is there any kind of extended benefits program still active in California right now? Do I need to file a new claim? Do I call California EDD or just wait to see what shows up in the mail? I have two kids and rent due in two weeks so I really need to figure this out as fast as possible. Has anyone else been through this recently and what did you actually do when your unemployment ran out?

First thing - don't panic, there are actually a few things you can check right now. When your regular California EDD UI claim exhausts, here's what you need to know for 2025: 1. Federal Extended Benefits (EB) - these only kick in when California's unemployment rate triggers specific thresholds. As of right now California does NOT have EB activated, so unfortunately that avenue isn't available. 2. You CAN file a new UI claim if you've worked enough hours since your original base period. Log into UI Online and check - if you worked any W-2 jobs during your benefit year it might qualify you for a new claim under a different base period. 3. If you're completely out of options through EDD, look into California's emergency assistance programs - CalWORKs if you have kids (which you mentioned you do), local county social services, and 211.ca.gov for immediate resources. The most important thing right now is to call California EDD directly to understand your specific situation because the options genuinely vary depending on your individual claim history.

AuthorWait so there's actually no extended benefits right now in California? I was reading something online that said there was a program still running but maybe that was old info. So my only real shot is if I worked enough to qualify for a new claim period?

Isabella Santos
Yeah the EB program requires California's 13-week insured unemployment rate to hit a specific trigger level and it hasn't been triggered in quite a while. Whatever you read was probably from 2020-2022 era info. The new claim route is genuinely your best first step - check UI Online today.

CalWORKs saved me when I was in a similar spot, especially since you have kids. Don't sleep on that option while you're sorting out the EDD stuff.

Going through almost the exact same thing right now and let me tell you, getting anyone on the phone at California EDD after your claim exhausts is a special kind of nightmare. I've been trying for days. The automated system keeps telling me to use UI Online but UI Online literally won't let me do anything because my claim is exhausted. I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it basically holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you when an actual agent is available instead of you sitting on hold for 3 hours. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. The agent I finally reached was able to tell me exactly whether I had any remaining options and helped me understand the new claim process. Seriously worth it when you're in a time crunch like we both are.

AuthorDoes that actually work? I'm skeptical of anything that claims to help with EDD at this point lol but I'm desperate enough to try almost anything

I was skeptical too honestly. But yeah it worked for me, I got a call back and spoke to a real EDD agent within the same day. Way better than redialing for hours.

seconded, used claimyr a couple months back when my adjudication was dragging on. legitimately gets you through to someone

I'll add - when you DO get through to an EDD agent, specifically ask them to check if you're eligible to file under an "alternate base period" for a new claim. That's the magic phrase that sometimes unlocks options people don't know about.

ok so i went thru this exact thing in march. what to do after unemployment runs out basically comes down to 3 things in california. 1 - check if you can refile. 2 - apply for any emergency county assistance. 3 - if you have kids definitely look at calfresh and calworks immediately dont wait on those. the edd stuff takes time but calfresh can be approved pretty fast

AuthorHow quickly did CalFresh get approved when you applied? I've never done any of these programs before and I don't really know what to expect timeline wise.

mine was like 10 days from application to first deposit, faster if you do expedited processing which you can request if your income is basically zero right now

CalFresh expedited is real, I got mine in like 3 days when I explained my situation at the county office. Definitely ask for it.

I want to make sure people in this thread aren't spreading misinformation - there is NO active federal extended benefits program in California as of 2025. I've seen multiple people in other threads get their hopes up about this and waste weeks waiting for something that isn't coming. The programs that existed during COVID (PUA, PEUC, EB triggers) are all gone. What you actually have available to you right now after your California EDD UI runs out is either a new regular UI claim if you have qualifying wages, or state/county assistance programs. That's it. Please don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Thank you for clarifying this!! I see so much outdated info about extended benefits floating around and it genuinely hurts people who are already struggling

AuthorThis is really helpful to know, I definitely saw some old posts that made it sound like extended benefits were still a thing. Good to have it confirmed.

Yeah and honestly California EDD's own website isn't great at clearly marking what's current vs. expired. Always check the date on anything you're reading about unemployment programs.

Here's the practical breakdown of how to check if you can file a new California EDD claim after exhaustion: Log into UI Online > scroll to the bottom where it shows your benefit year end date. Once your benefit year ends (usually 12 months from when you first filed), you can attempt to file a new claim. If your benefit year HASN'T ended yet, you're in a trickier spot and that's when you really need to call EDD directly. For the new claim to work you need: wages earned in the last 18 months that weren't counted in your original base period. Even part-time work, temp jobs, gig work on a W-2 basis - all of that counts. Don't assume you don't qualify without actually checking. The alternate base period (most recent 4 quarters) is often more favorable than the standard base period so specifically request that calculation when you file.

AuthorMy benefit year end date - where exactly do I find that in UI Online? I'm looking at my account right now and not seeing it obviously.
0 coins
Omar Fawaz
Go to UI Online > Claim Summary. It should list your benefit year begin and end dates right there on that page. If your end date hasn't passed yet you'll want to call EDD since filing a new claim before your benefit year ends is where it gets complicated.

Solid advice. The alternate base period thing is legit underused, I qualified for way more on my second claim because of it.

Not trying to derail but has anyone looked into the Trade Adjustment Assistance program? OP mentioned losing their job because their company lost a contract - if that contract involved any kind of international trade or competition, TAA can actually extend benefits pretty significantly and also covers retraining costs. It's a federal program through the EDD but completely separate from regular UI. Worth at least googling your company and industry to see if it might apply.
0 coins
Malik Davis
AuthorI honestly have never heard of this. The company I worked for did move some operations overseas when they lost the contract... would that potentially qualify?
0 coins
Ravi Gupta
Possibly yes! The key is whether job losses were linked to increased imports or offshoring. You'd need to file a TAA petition (or see if your employer or union already did) and EDD handles the benefits side. Google "TAA petition California" for more info. Definitely worth looking into given what you described.
0 coins
Isabella Santos
Good catch, TAA is genuinely underutilized and the income support can last much longer than regular UI while you're in an approved training program. The application process is separate but EDD coordinates with the federal Department of Labor on it.

went through this last fall and the thing that helped me most was just getting someone at EDD on the phone who could actually look at my specific account and tell me what was and wasn't possible. generic advice from forums (including this one lol) only gets you so far because everyone's claim situation is different. I used Claimyr to get through after spending like two days trying to call on my own. claimyr.com - you can watch how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. once i actually talked to an agent they walked me through exactly what my options were based on my actual claim history, told me I could file a new claim under the alternate base period, and I had a new claim opened same day. no amount of googling would have told me that because it was specific to my account.

Zara Rashid
Same experience here. The EDD phone system is a nightmare but once you actually get a human they're usually pretty helpful and can see things in your account you can't see from UI Online.

AuthorOk I'm going to try this today. At this point I've been going in circles trying to figure out my options and I just need someone who can actually look at my account.

Good luck, hope you get through quickly. Make sure when you do get an agent to ask specifically about alternate base period eligibility AND whether there are any flags or issues on your account that might complicate filing a new claim. Get everything answered in one call if you can.

Can i ask a dumb question - when your benefits run out do you still need to keep logging job search activities in CalJOBS or can you stop? asking for myself bc my balance is getting low and i dont know if there are consequences for stopping before im technically told to
0 coins
Isabella Santos
Not a dumb question at all. Once your benefit year ends and you're no longer receiving UI payments, you no longer have the job search reporting obligation tied to CalJOBS for EDD purposes. However if you file a new claim, the requirement kicks back in immediately. If you're applying for other programs like CalWORKs, they have their own separate work participation requirements.

ok that makes sense, thank you. my weeks are running out fast and i was worried about like penalties or something for stopping the job search reporting

The emotional part of this that nobody talks about - figuring out what to do after unemployment runs out is incredibly stressful and it's okay to feel overwhelmed. I went through this and kept thinking I had done something wrong or missed something I should have caught. Sometimes benefits just run out before you find a job and that's not a personal failure, the system is just genuinely hard to navigate. Practically speaking though - county social services can bridge gaps while you're sorting out EDD options. Your county's human services agency can screen you for multiple programs in one visit (CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, emergency assistance). Don't wait until you're completely out of resources to start that process.

AuthorThank you for this. I've been really hard on myself about not finding a job in 26 weeks. The logistics job market has been brutal this past year.
0 coins
StarStrider
Logistics specifically has been rough, you're not imagining it. The job market in that sector contracted a lot and 26 weeks just isn't enough time for a lot of people. Be kind to yourself while you work through this.
0 coins
Chloe Anderson
real talk the 26 week limit has always felt too short for any serious economic downturn. not your fault the system was designed for like, seasonal unemployment not structural job loss

Sean Doyle
Quick practical note on timing - if you're going to file a new California EDD UI claim, do it as soon as your current benefit year end date passes (not before). Filing even one day early can create complications. Set a calendar reminder. The new claim won't be retroactive so you don't lose anything by waiting for the exact date, but filing early can mess up the system and cause delays.
0 coins
Omar Fawaz
This is accurate and important. The benefit year end date is a hard boundary in EDD's system. Filing a new claim before it passes creates issues that then require a phone call to fix, which as everyone in this thread knows is its own nightmare.

Malik Davis
AuthorOk writing this down. Benefit year end date in my account is showing [checking now]... looks like it's about 6 weeks away from now. So I have a wait ahead of me.
0 coins
Sean Doyle
Six weeks is actually useful lead time - you can use that time to gather your wage documents (W-2s, pay stubs from any work during the benefit year), look into TAA if that applies to your situation, and get CalFresh/CalWORKs applications in now since those aren't dependent on your EDD status.

YALL the EDD phone system genuinely does not work for people in exhaused claim situations like this. I spent THREE DAYS calling after my benefits ran out and every single time I either got disconnected or the automated system told me to use UI Online. UI ONLINE DOES NOT HELP WHEN YOUR CLAIM IS DONE. the irony of being told to use the online system when the problem IS the online system showing zero balance is infuriating beyond belief
0 coins
GalacticGuru
I felt this in my soul. The circular redirect between the phone system and UI Online when neither can actually help you is such a design failure. Real humans at EDD can help, the trick is getting to one.
0 coins
Luca Romano
exactly!! and when you finally DO get through after 4 hours on hold they can usually fix things or explain options in like 10 minutes. why is the human access so impossible
0 coins
Anastasia Fedorov
This is a known and documented problem with EDD's phone infrastructure. It's not accidental - the system is overwhelmed and the design discourages contacts by pushing people to self-service options that genuinely can't handle complex or exhausted-claim situations. Infuriating but very real.

i think people sleep on retraining options when unemployment runs out. california has programs through the workforce development boards (America's Job Center of California locations) where you can get funded retraining for in-demand fields. logistics to supply chain tech, warehouse management systems, CDL if you don't already have one - some of these programs pay a stipend while you're training. not the same as unemployment but it keeps something coming in while you build new skills
0 coins
Malik Davis
AuthorI hadn't thought about this angle at all. I actually have been open to pivoting within logistics into something more tech-focused like warehouse management systems or supply chain software. Is this through EDD or completely separate?
0 coins
Nia Jackson
It's coordinated through the local Workforce Development Board, not EDD directly. Find your local America's Job Center of California (AJCC) - it's free to walk in and meet with a career counselor who can screen you for all available funding. The Individual Training Account (ITA) program can cover tuition costs at approved schools.
0 coins
Ravi Gupta
The AJCC offices are genuinely underutilized. Career counselors there can also help with resume, job search strategy, and connecting you with local employer job fairs. Free service, don't ignore it.

Just want to share that I was in this exact situation about 4 months ago - benefits exhausted, couldn't get through to EDD, had no idea what my options were. Here's how it ended up: - Got through to EDD finally (used Claimyr, found out about it from a thread similar to this one - claimyr.com) - Agent confirmed I qualified for a new claim under alternate base period due to some part time work I did month 4 of my claim - New claim approved about 3 weeks after filing - In the meantime used CalFresh to cover groceries The gap between claims was the hardest part financially but it was survivable. It does eventually resolve. Hang in there OP.
0 coins
Malik Davis
AuthorThis is genuinely really reassuring to hear. The gap is what I'm most scared about. Did you have any income at all during those 3 weeks?
0 coins
Mateo Hernandez
Honestly barely anything. I picked up one shift doing delivery gig work which helped a little. CalFresh covered food which reduced the pressure significantly. My landlord was willing to work with me when I explained the situation honestly - don't assume yours won't be.

StarStrider
The landlord conversation is such an underrated piece of advice. Many landlords would rather work out a temporary arrangement than deal with the eviction process. Worth having that conversation proactively rather than waiting until you're actually behind.

does anyone know if you have to repay benefits from your first claim if you end up qualifying for a second one?? i keep getting confused about this. like does EDD consider it an overpayment situation if you exhaust your first claim and then qualify for more
0 coins
Anastasia Fedorov
No, exhausting your first claim is not an overpayment situation. You received benefits you were entitled to. A new claim under a new benefit year with new qualifying wages is a completely separate claim - no repayment of the first claim is involved or implied. Overpayments only occur if EDD determines you received benefits you weren't actually entitled to during a claim period.

CosmicCruiser
ok THANK YOU this is exactly what i was confused about. i thought filing a new claim might somehow trigger a review of the old one and create problems

Omar Fawaz
Common misunderstanding but no, they're evaluated independently. A new claim doesn't flag the old one for review.

slightly off topic but OP since you're in logistics - LinkedIn has actually been really active for supply chain and logistics roles in the last few months. I'm a recruiter and we're seeing real movement in 3PL operations, freight forwarding, and last-mile delivery management. Your 3 job search activities per week through CalJOBS probably won't capture the best opportunities - LinkedIn, Indeed with job alerts, and direct applications to 3PL companies are where the action is right now. Don't give up on the job search side while sorting out benefits.
0 coins
Malik Davis
AuthorThis is actually helpful, thank you. I've been mostly applying through CalJOBS because I thought I had to but I should be using other platforms too. Do applications through LinkedIn count for the EDD job search activity log?
0 coins
Aisha Khan
Yes! Any legitimate job application counts, regardless of platform. LinkedIn applications, direct company website applications, Indeed - all of it. CalJOBS is just one option, not a requirement for every activity. Keep your log updated with the date, company, position, and how you applied.
0 coins
Isabella Santos
Correct - the California EDD job search requirement is 3 documented activities per week and they can be a mix of applications, employer contacts, job fairs, workshops, etc. The platform doesn't matter as long as you document it properly.

UPDATE for everyone who helped: I used Claimyr today (claimyr.com) after spending two hours trying to call on my own with no luck. Got a callback within about 90 minutes and spoke to an actual EDD agent. Here's what I learned: - My benefit year ends in 6 weeks so I can't file a new claim yet - I DO have wages from some part-time temp work I did in month 2 of my claim that could qualify me under the alternate base period - the agent said it looks promising but I need to actually file to know for certain - No extended benefits available in California right now (confirmed what people said here) - Agent suggested I apply for CalFresh immediately since my income is currently zero - She also mentioned AJCC career services and said to specifically ask about ITA funding for retraining So the plan: CalFresh application tomorrow, AJCC appointment next week, calendar reminder for benefit year end date to file new claim. Thank you all for actually explaining what to do after unemployment runs out, this thread saved me so much time.

Good update. For anyone reading this later: this is exactly why talking to an actual EDD agent matters for exhausted claims. The specific details of your account (wage history, base period options, any flags) cannot be determined from general advice - you need a human to look at your actual record.
