What is technological unemployment and can I file a California EDD claim if I lost my job to automation?
So I work in data entry and my company just laid off our entire department because they implemented some new AI software that basically does everything we used to do. My supervisor actually said the words 'we're automating your roles' in the meeting. I've been with this company for 6 years and now I'm just... done. I filed for California EDD unemployment benefits last week but I'm genuinely confused about something — what is technological unemployment exactly, and does it affect how California EDD processes my claim? Like is it treated differently than a regular layoff? My claim is just sitting there showing 'pending' and I don't know if there's some special category I should have indicated when I filed. I reported it as a layoff but now I'm second-guessing myself. Anyone dealt with this kind of situation?

technological unemployment just means you lost your job because a machine or software replaced you, it's been happening forever honestly but AI is making it way more common now. For California EDD purposes though it's still classified as a standard layoff — you didn't quit, you didn't get fired for cause, your employer eliminated your position. That's all EDD really cares about. You should be fine with how you filed it.

AuthorOk that's actually really reassuring. I was spiraling thinking I filed under the wrong category and it would mess up my whole claim.

same thing happened to a coworker of mine, she got laid off when they brought in automation software for the accounting dept. she just filed as a regular layoff and got approved no problem

AuthorDid she have any issues with adjudication or anything? My claim has been pending for almost 2 weeks now.

Your instinct to file as a layoff was correct. California EDD doesn't have a separate category for technological unemployment — it falls squarely under 'lack of work' which is the standard reason code for layoffs. What matters for your UI eligibility is that your separation was involuntary and through no fault of your own. Getting replaced by automation 100% qualifies. Your base period wages from the past 18 months will determine your weekly benefit amount, so make sure you've been certifying every two weeks while you wait.

AuthorYes I've been certifying, I did my first certification already. But the status still just says pending — is that normal for this long?

two weeks pending is actually pretty normal in my experience, sometimes it takes 3-4 weeks before anything moves. dont freak out yet

Zadie Patel
Correct, pending status for 2 weeks doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. However if it crosses into adjudication status, that's when you'd want to take more active steps to find out what's going on.

I went through something almost identical last year when the logistics company I worked for replaced our dispatch coordinators with automated routing software. Totally blindsided. When I was trying to figure out what was happening with my claim I could NOT get through to an EDD agent no matter what I did. Spent days redialing. Eventually someone told me about Claimyr — it's a service that navigates the EDD phone system and gets you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical but I tried it and finally got someone on the line who walked me through exactly where my claim stood. Website is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 — honestly wish I'd found it sooner because weeks of stress could have been avoided.

is this legit? seems too good to be true that something can just... get you through to edd lol

100% legit, I had the same skepticism. It just handles the hold queue stuff so you don't have to sit there redialing all day. You still talk to an actual EDD agent at the end.

TECHNOLOGICAL UNEMPLOYMENT IS REAL AND EDD DOES NOT CARE. I lost my job to a chatbot — I was a customer service rep for 8 years — and EDD made me jump through SO many hoops. They kept sending me these vague letters about 'eligibility investigation' and never explained why. Eventually got approved but it took almost 2 months. The system is completely broken for people whose entire job categories are disappearing.

Mikayla Brown
AuthorTwo months?? That's terrifying. Were you able to get any payments during that time or were you just completely without income?

Lucas Parker
I got backpay eventually for all the weeks I certified during adjudication, so that helped, but man those two months were brutal financially. Make sure you keep certifying every single week even if nothing seems to be moving!!

To give you a more complete answer on what technological unemployment means in an economic context: it refers to job displacement caused by technological innovation — traditionally machinery, now increasingly AI and software automation. The term goes back to the early 20th century actually. For California EDD purposes this has no special classification, but it's worth knowing that your situation is part of a massive structural labor shift happening right now, which means California EDD offices are seeing increasing numbers of claims from workers displaced specifically by AI tools. Some EDD staffers may not even be fully briefed on how to categorize these situations, so make sure you document everything about your layoff — especially any written communication your employer gave you stating that automation was the reason.

AuthorI do have an email from HR that specifically mentions the automation initiative as the reason for the layoffs. Should I upload that somewhere in my UI Online account?
0 coins
Harper Collins
Yes — if EDD contacts you for any clarification or if you end up in adjudication, having that documentation ready to upload through UI Online could be very important. It clearly establishes this was a lack-of-work separation not a termination for cause or a quit.

Sean Matthews
good point, documentation of the exact layoff reason is super useful if adjudication happens

ok wait I'm confused about something — if the company is basically saying 'the software does your job now,' could EDD somehow interpret that as the job still existing, just being done by a computer? Like could they deny the claim on some weird technicality like that?
0 coins
Zadie Patel
No — the job existing in some form doesn't matter. What matters is that YOUR position was eliminated and you were laid off. EDD is looking at your employment status, not whether a function continues to exist in some automated form. This is a standard lack-of-work layoff.

Kelsey Hawkins
ok good because I was gonna say that seems really unfair if they could do that

I actually went through almost this exact situation six months ago — data processing job, company rolled out an automation platform and let 12 of us go in one shot. My claim went into adjudication pretty much immediately and I panicked. What saved me was getting on the phone with an EDD rep who actually looked at my claim in real time. I used Claimyr to get through after failing to reach anyone for over a week. The rep confirmed it was flagged because my employer had initially responded to EDD's employer questionnaire with some ambiguous language. Once the rep saw my documentation it got cleared up pretty fast. Seriously cannot emphasize enough how important it is to actually speak to someone at EDD rather than just waiting and hoping.

Mikayla Brown
AuthorThe employer questionnaire thing is interesting — so my employer has to respond to EDD too? I didn't realize they were part of this process.
0 coins
Dylan Fisher
Yes, EDD contacts your former employer as part of verifying the separation. If the employer's response is unclear or inconsistent with what you reported, that can trigger adjudication. That's why the HR email you mentioned is really valuable.

just want to say I'm in a similar boat — was a paralegal assistant and the firm started using AI contract review tools and then quietly reduced our team by 60%. filed my EDD claim two weeks ago and also just showing pending. following this thread closely

My cousin works at an EDD office (not giving advice on her behalf just sharing what she mentioned casually) and apparently they've been seeing a noticeable uptick in layoff claims where automation is cited as the reason. She said the claims themselves aren't treated any differently procedurally but there's definitely more volume which is contributing to processing delays across the board.
0 coins
Mikayla Brown
AuthorThat actually makes a lot of sense. The delays might just be a volume issue rather than something specific to my claim.

Lucas Parker
volume issue meaning we all have to suffer because corporations decided to automate everything simultaneously lol great

Quick update for anyone following — OP you mentioned your claim is at 2 weeks pending. If it flips to adjudication, don't wait around hoping for a letter. Call EDD immediately. And if you can't get through — which is honestly the norm — Claimyr at claimyr.com is genuinely worth trying. There's a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains how the whole thing works. Getting an actual human on the line when your claim status changes is way better than playing the waiting game.

One more thing worth knowing: California has a robust appeal process if your claim gets denied for any reason. You have 30 days from the date of a Notice of Determination to file an appeal with the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. Given your clear documentation of an involuntary layoff due to automation, a denial would be unusual, but it's good to know your rights. Also, while your claim is pending or in adjudication, you're still required to conduct your job search activities — California currently requires you to contact at least three potential employers each week and log those contacts in case EDD requests them.
0 coins
Mikayla Brown
AuthorThe job search requirement — does that count online applications or does it have to be direct employer contact?
0 coins
Harper Collins
Online applications do count as job search contacts. Each application to a distinct employer counts as one contact. Just keep records of where you applied, the date, position title, and contact method. EDD can request this log at any time.
0 coins
Kelsey Hawkins
wait they can actually ask to see your job search log?? I did not know that. I've been doing the activities but not really tracking them formally
0 coins
Harper Collins
Yes they can audit your job search records. It doesn't happen on every claim but it does happen. Start keeping a simple spreadsheet going forward — employer name, date, position, how you applied. Very simple to maintain.

honestly the hardest part of all this isn't even the money stress its the identity stuff. like I spent years building skills in data entry and document management and now I'm being told a software does it better. EDD is the practical problem but there's a whole other thing going on emotionally

Mikayla Brown
AuthorYes. Exactly this. I keep thinking about what I'm even supposed to pivot to when entire job categories are disappearing.

same. my therapist says to focus on what's transferable but it's hard not to feel like the rug got pulled

there are actually some free retraining programs through EDD called WIOA that might be worth looking into while you're between jobs. not gonna fix the emotional part but at least there's something concrete

On the job search requirement front — there's also a CalJOBS component worth being aware of. California EDD may require you to register with CalJOBS, the state's job search database, particularly if your claim remains active for an extended period. Some claimants also get referred to America's Job Center of California locations for reemployment services. None of this affects your current pending status but it's worth knowing so you're not caught off guard.
0 coins
Kelsey Hawkins
I got a CalJOBS registration notice when I filed. Is that mandatory or optional?
0 coins
Zadie Patel
Generally mandatory for most claimants. Complete it promptly — failing to complete required registration steps can affect your benefit payments.

For anyone in this thread still trying to reach EDD — one tip beyond Claimyr that helped me: call right when the lines open at 8am, specifically on Tuesday or Wednesday. Mondays are brutal because of weekend backlog. Still wasn't able to get through doing it manually so I ended up using Claimyr anyway, but the timing tip at least gives you a fighting chance if you want to try solo first.

UPDATE FOR OP: my coworker who I mentioned earlier (the one who got replaced by accounting software) wanted me to share — she got approved in about 3 weeks total from filing date. Her employer responded clearly to EDD's questionnaire confirming the layoff was due to automation implementation. She thinks that clear employer response is what kept her out of adjudication. So fingers crossed your HR email situation works in your favor the same way.

AuthorThis is really encouraging, thank you for sharing. I'm going to reach out to my HR contact and let them know to respond clearly if EDD contacts them.

also make sure your UI Online account has correct bank info for direct deposit set up. I know that sounds obvious but I delayed my first actual payment by like 10 days because I had an old bank account on file and had to wait for a paper check instead

Coming in late to this thread but wanted to add — I work in tech and got laid off when my team got restructured around an AI pipeline. One thing my career counselor mentioned: California's Employment Training Panel (ETP) and some of the EDD-connected retraining programs specifically have pathways for workers displaced by technology. Might be worth looking into alongside your unemployment claim, not instead of it.
0 coins
Mikayla Brown
AuthorI didn't know EDD had specific retraining resources for tech displacement. That's actually really valuable info for thinking about next steps.

Correct — the EDD's CalJOBS system and affiliated workforce development programs do include options for skill retraining. Looking into this early is smart because some programs have enrollment windows.

CLAIM UPDATE: Wanted to report back since this thread has been so helpful. My claim status changed this morning from 'pending' to 'approved' — exactly 17 days after I filed. No adjudication, just straight to approved. EDD's determination letter cites 'lack of work' as the reason code which is exactly what I filed. First payment is processing now. For anyone finding this thread later in the same situation — yes, getting replaced by automation counts as a standard layoff for California EDD purposes, file it as lack of work, keep certifying, document everything from your employer about the automation, and don't panic if it takes 2-3 weeks.
