Back to California Unemployment

What do I do if I haven't received my unemployment payment from California EDD?

Okay so I'm kind of freaking out right now. I certified for my weekly claim like I always do and it's been 10 days and I still haven't received my unemployment payment. Nothing in my bank account, no debit card deposit, nothing. I checked UI Online and it just shows 'payment issued' but the money hasn't shown up anywhere. I don't even know if there's a problem with my direct deposit info or what. This has never happened before in the 4 months I've been collecting. Has anyone else dealt with not receiving their unemployment payment even though EDD says it was issued? Do I call them or just wait it out? I have rent due in 3 days and I'm genuinely stressed.

First thing you should do is check the payment status details in UI Online more carefully. When it says 'payment issued,' there's usually a date next to it. If that date was within the last 3 business days, it may just be in transit. Direct deposit can take 2-3 business days from when California EDD releases it, and debit card deposits through Bank of America ReliaCard can sometimes take a bit longer. Log into your UI Online account, go to 'Payment Activity,' and check what method the payment was sent to. If your banking info is wrong or expired, the payment might have bounced back to EDD.

I checked and it says payment issued 8 days ago. That seems way too long for it to still be processing right?

0 coins

Yeah 8 days is definitely past the normal window. At that point you'd want to check if your direct deposit info is still current in your account settings. If there was a routing or account number mismatch, EDD would have the funds sitting in a returned payment limbo. You'd need to contact them to get it reissued.

0 coins

same thing happened to my sister and it turned out her bank account had been closed and she didnt update her info with edd

0 coins

I went through this exact nightmare two months ago. My payment showed issued for 11 days straight and I was absolutely losing my mind. What happened was my direct deposit had silently failed because my bank had issued me a new account number after a fraud alert and I never updated EDD. The money gets held by EDD for a period before they reissue it, but you DO have to call them to trigger the reissuance process. They won't automatically send it again without you flagging the issue.

How did you actually get through to someone at EDD though? I've been calling the 1-800-300-5616 number and I either get a busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting forever.

0 coins

Honestly it took me like 4 days of calling before I got through. I tried calling right when they open at 8am. It's brutal.

0 coins

EDD phone lines are a JOKE. I sat on hold for 2 hours once and then the call just dropped. Two hours completely wasted. This system is designed to make you give up.

0 coins

For anyone struggling to actually reach a California EDD agent about a missing payment, I want to mention something that helped me when I was in a similar spot. There's a service called Claimyr that basically gets you connected to a live EDD rep without you having to spend hours redialing. You can check it out at claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I was skeptical at first but when I had a payment issue I needed resolved quickly, it actually got me through to someone. For a situation like yours where rent is on the line, it might be worth looking into.

Wait this actually works? I've never heard of it. Going to check out that video now because I seriously cannot keep burning hours on hold.

0 coins

is this legit? sounds kinda sketchy tbh

0 coins

I get the skepticism, I felt the same way. But I tried everything else first and kept getting nowhere with EDD's phone system. It just connects you to the actual EDD line, you still talk to a real EDD agent for your actual claim issue.

0 coins

I've seen a few people mention claimyr in threads like this. Seems like the consensus is it does what it says it does.

0 coins

okay wait I need to understand something - when you say you 'haven't received' your unemployment, do you mean you never got the money at all, or do you mean EDD hasn't processed your certification yet? Because those are two different problems. If UI Online says 'payment issued' then EDD sent it. The issue would be on the banking/card side. But if it says 'pending' or 'in progress' that means EDD hasn't actually released the funds yet and there might be an eligibility hold.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

It definitely says 'payment issued' with a date from 8 days ago. So you're saying the problem is somewhere between EDD and my bank?

0 coins

Most likely yeah. Either your bank rejected it, wrong account info, or the ReliaCard has some hold. Do you use direct deposit to a personal bank account or the EDD debit card?

Direct deposit to my Wells Fargo account. I've gotten payments there before no problem but my account info hasn't changed so I don't know what happened.

0 coins

Wells Fargo sometimes has processing delays that other banks don't. I switched to a credit union and my EDD deposits have been way more consistent.

0 coins

dont panic yet!! i know its stressful but sometimes there are just weird delays. one time my payment said issued and it took like 5 extra days to actually hit my account. not saying thats definitely your situation but it does happen. fingers crossed its just a delay for you

Yuki Ito

I hope so too but 8 days is making me really nervous. I can't just hope it shows up before rent is due.

0 coins

totally understandable. if it were me id be calling edd like crazy at this point. definitely worth trying

0 coins

California EDD has specific procedures for what they call 'returned payments' - when a direct deposit bounces back to them. They actually hold those funds and require you to verify your banking information before they'll reissue. The problem is you DO have to contact them because the system won't automatically retry. You should also double check that there's no message or notice in your UI Online inbox because sometimes they send an alert when a payment is returned. Check under the 'Message Center' section if you haven't already.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

Oh I didn't even think to check the message center. Let me look right now actually.

0 coins

Yes definitely check there first before spending time trying to call. If there's a notice about the returned payment it will also tell you what steps to take to get it reissued.

0 coins

This is good advice. My message center had a notice about my returned payment that I completely missed because I was so focused on the payment activity page.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

UPDATE: there WAS a message in there!! It says my direct deposit was returned and I need to call EDD to verify my banking info and request reissuance. I had no idea this was sitting there. Thank you!!

0 coins

I've been dealing with California EDD for a while and let me tell you, the fact that they just quietly send a message in some inbox that nobody checks instead of like texting you or emailing you that YOUR MONEY got returned is absolutely infuriating. How is someone supposed to know to check a message center on a government website when they're waiting on a payment? The whole UI system is built to trip people up.

0 coins

Hard agree. The communication from EDD is genuinely terrible. You have to know where to look for everything.

0 coins

They do send email notifications but only if you opted in and set up your notification preferences. Most people don't realize they have to turn that on.

0 coins

Of course there's an opt-in setting buried somewhere. Because why would they default to notifying you about YOUR OWN MONEY. Sorry I'm just so over how this whole system works.

0 coins

So now that you know what the issue is you basically have two tasks: 1) update your banking info in UI Online to make sure whatever caused the original return doesn't happen again, and 2) call EDD to trigger the reissuance. The updating part you can do yourself online no problem. The calling part... good luck. I'd look into that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier if you need to get through fast given your rent situation. Having to wait days to get a rep on the line when money is this urgent is rough.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

Yeah I saw that suggestion earlier. I watched the video at the link they shared and I think I'm going to try it. I can't afford to spend 3 days calling and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Definitely makes sense given your situation. Hope you get it sorted before rent is due.

0 coins

updating banking info is super easy, takes like 2 minutes in UI Online. the calling part is where people get stuck

0 coins

genuine question for the thread - if EDD reissues the payment after you call them, how long does it take to actually get the money? Like does it reset the whole processing timeline or is it faster since they already approved the original claim?

0 coins

Good question. From my experience and what I've read, reissuances typically process within 2-5 business days once EDD initiates them. It's not as slow as an initial payment because the eligibility determination is already done - they're just resending funds. But it's not instant either.

0 coins

This is accurate. The reissuance is basically just an ACH transfer being reinitiated. The hold time is usually shorter than an original claim payment. Some people have reported getting it in as little as 1-2 business days.

0 coins

okay that's helpful to know. so it's not like starting over from scratch at least

0 coins

Something nobody has mentioned yet - make sure when you update your direct deposit info in UI Online that you also double check the routing number. A lot of people only look at the account number when something goes wrong but banks sometimes update routing numbers especially after mergers. Wells Fargo in particular has had routing number variations by region that have caused problems for EDD deposits.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

Oh wow I wouldn't have thought about the routing number. I'm going to verify both carefully before I update anything.

0 coins

Yeah it's worth pulling up a current voided check image from your bank's app to confirm both numbers are exactly right before submitting to EDD.

0 coins

Good catch. Also worth noting that savings account routing numbers are sometimes different from checking account routing numbers even at the same bank.

0 coins

went thru something almost identical like 6 weeks ago. payment showed issued, nothing in my account, panicked for a week. turned out my bank had flagged an 'unusual deposit' and put a 10 day hold on it without telling me. so the money was technically at my bank sitting in some review queue. might be worth calling your bank too not just edd

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

Oh that's a really good point I hadn't considered. Maybe the issue is on Wells Fargo's end not EDD's. Though the message center notice said 'returned payment' so it sounds like it actually bounced back.

0 coins

ah yeah if edd is showing returned then it came back to them. still worth calling your bank just to confirm nothing weird on their end but sounds like edd has the money at this point

0 coins

Yeah once EDD shows returned payment the funds are back with them. Bank wouldn't have anything in that case.

0 coins

I know everyone here is dealing with EDD issues but can I just ask - does anyone know if there's a way to expedite a reissuance if you can demonstrate financial hardship? Like if rent is literally due I assume EDD can't just say sorry wait 5 days?

0 coins

California EDD doesn't have a formal expedite program for reissuances the way some agencies do. However, if you explain the hardship situation to the agent when you call, some reps will flag it for faster processing. It's not guaranteed but it's worth clearly stating the situation.

0 coins

You can also look into emergency resources through 211 California while you wait. Things like emergency rental assistance programs can sometimes bridge a gap like this. Not ideal but worth knowing about.

0 coins

That's helpful thank you. The 211 option is actually a good backup I hadn't thought of.

0 coins

and THIS is why I tell everyone to keep a 2-week buffer from EDD payments before bills are due if at all possible. I know that's impossible for a lot of people but EDD will randomly hold your payment, lose your payment, return your payment, adjudicate your claim out of nowhere... treating it as reliable income with exact timing is setting yourself up for exactly this kind of nightmare. I say this with empathy because I've been there.

0 coins

easier said than done when you're living paycheck to paycheck but fair point

0 coins

100% I know. I didn't mean it as criticism just hard-won advice from too many rent panics during my own unemployment stretch.

0 coins

It's genuinely good advice. The EDD payment system is inconsistent enough that you can't budget around it the way you would a regular paycheck.

0 coins

btw for anyone reading this thread later - you can check your payment status 24/7 through UI Online at the California EDD website without having to call anyone. The payment activity section shows each certification period and whether the payment is pending, issued, or if there was an issue. Checking this regularly after you certify can help you catch problems earlier instead of waiting and wondering.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

I wish I had been checking it more closely honestly. I just assumed no news was good news. Lesson learned.

0 coins

Yeah it's one of those things nobody tells you when you first file. Checking in every few days after certifying is just a good habit.

0 coins

also worth turning on email notifications in your account settings so you get pinged if there's an issue

0 coins

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr suggestion since OP mentioned they were going to try it - for anyone else in a similar situation where you need to reach California EDD quickly about a payment issue, the link again is claimyr.com and the demo video is at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Payment problems that require agent intervention (like returned payment reissuance) are exactly the kind of thing where sitting on hold for hours is the difference between making rent and not. Having a way to reliably get through is genuinely useful.

0 coins

ok i actually looked into this after seeing it mentioned. seems straightforward enough. might save this for next time i need to call edd about something

0 coins

The EDD phone system is bad enough that anything that helps you actually reach a human being is worth knowing about.

0 coins

OP please update us when you get this resolved! Rooting for you to get your money before rent is due. These situations are so stressful and nobody should have to go through this because of a payment routing glitch.

Will do! I called EDD this morning and actually got through to someone (used the claimyr thing and it worked, was connected within a reasonable time). The rep confirmed it was a returned payment and initiated the reissuance. She said 2-3 business days. Fingers crossed it hits before rent deadline. Thanks everyone for the help, seriously.

0 coins

That's great news! So relieved to hear you got through to someone and got it sorted.

0 coins

Nice! Glad claimyr worked out and glad you got an answer. 2-3 days should hopefully make your deadline.

0 coins

Great outcome. For future reference, once they initiate a reissuance you can watch for the updated payment status in UI Online - it will show a new issued date when the ACH goes out again.

0 coins

For anyone who finds this thread later dealing with the same 'payment issued but never received' situation from California EDD, here's the quick summary of what to check: 1. Verify the issued date in UI Online Payment Activity - if it's been more than 3-4 business days, something's wrong 2. Check your UI Online Message Center for any notices about returned payments 3. Verify your direct deposit or ReliaCard info is current and accurate 4. Call EDD to report the issue and request reissuance if payment was returned 5. Confirm routing AND account number with your bank before updating anything The key thing is EDD won't automatically retry a failed payment - you have to initiate it.

0 coins

This is a really solid summary. Should be pinned honestly.

0 coins

Saving this. The message center step is the one most people miss.

0 coins

wish i had seen something like this when i was going thru my payment issues. would have saved a lot of stress

0 coins

random but relevant - I had a situation where my payment showed returned and when I called EDD they said it would be reissued but it came as a paper check instead of direct deposit even though I have DD set up. Just something to be aware of - if you don't get the deposit in a few days, check if maybe EDD mailed a check to your address on file. Took me two extra weeks to figure that out.

0 coins

Yuki Ito

Author

Oh wow I would not have thought to check for a paper check. Good to know.

0 coins

This happens. EDD sometimes defaults to paper check for reissuances in certain situations. Make sure your mailing address is current in your account too.

0 coins

Good callout. After a returned payment, confirm with the agent specifically whether the reissuance will go back to direct deposit or if they're issuing a check. Don't assume.

0 coins

I haven't received my unemployment payment either and this thread is exactly what I needed to find. I've been assuming it was just taking longer than normal but now I'm realizing I should go check my message center immediately. Thank you all for actually being helpful, this kind of specific real experience is so much more useful than generic EDD FAQ pages.

0 coins

Go check right now! Seriously. The sooner you catch a returned payment notice the sooner you can get it resolved.

0 coins

Just checked - there's a notice in there!! My payment was returned too because my bank info was outdated. I can't believe I didn't know to look here. Now I know I need to call EDD.

0 coins

If you need help getting through to EDD on the phone, check out claimyr.com - there's a video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 showing how it works. Given OP's experience today it seems like a solid option when you need to get through quickly.

0 coins

Thank you! Going to check that out right now before I spend all day redialing.
