What day do you file for unemployment with California EDD?
Ok so I'm completely new to this whole thing and honestly confused about timing. I got laid off from my warehouse job about two weeks ago and finally got around to trying to set up my claim. My question is pretty basic but I can't find a straight answer anywhere - what day do you file for unemployment? Like is there a specific day of the week I'm supposed to certify or submit stuff? I went on UI Online and it's asking me about my certification period but I have no idea what that even means or if I'm doing this on the right day. Does it matter when you file your initial claim vs when you certify each week? I don't want to mess anything up and lose money because I picked the wrong day or something. Any help would be appreciated, even just point me in the right direction.

Good news - you can file your initial unemployment claim with California EDD on any day of the week, there's no specific day requirement for that part. The confusion usually comes in when people mix up the initial claim filing with the weekly certification process, which is a totally separate thing. Here's how it actually works: After you file your initial claim, California EDD assigns you a specific certification schedule based on things like the last digit of your Social Security number. You'll get a designated window each week (usually Sunday through Saturday for your benefit week) and then you can certify starting the Sunday after that week ends. Most people try to certify as early as possible on Sunday to avoid delays in payment. The key thing to remember is don't certify before your benefit week is actually over, or you could have issues with your claim. Check your UI Online account for your specific certification dates - it should show you exactly when your window opens.

AuthorOh ok that makes way more sense now. So the initial filing I already did should be fine since I just did it today (Thursday). But I need to watch for when they assign me my certification schedule? How will I know when that is?

Aiden Rodríguez
Yes exactly, your Thursday filing is totally fine. You'll get a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award in the mail or online that shows your benefit year start date and your weekly benefit amount. That letter will also clarify your certification schedule. Keep checking UI Online too because it usually updates before the paper mail arrives.

same thing confused me when i first filed lol. the initial claim vs weekly cert thing is totally different and they don't explain it great on the website

To add some practical detail here - when California EDD says you can certify for a given week, you generally have a window that starts Sunday and you can do it anytime through Saturday the following week without penalty. But waiting too long can delay your payment by a whole week cycle, so most experienced claimants certify on Sunday or Monday morning. Also just to flag - the VERY first certification period is often a two-week period because of the one-week unpaid waiting period that California EDD requires. So don't freak out when your first certification covers two weeks at once. That's normal.

Maya Patel
AuthorWait there's an unpaid waiting period?? Nobody told me that. How long does that last?
0 coins
Ava Kim
It's one week - California EDD calls it the waiting period week and it's basically the first week of your claim that you certify for but don't get paid for. It's been a California requirement forever. So your first actual payment will cover week 2, but the waiting period week still has to be certified correctly.

the waiting period week got me so confused when i first filed too. i thought my claim was broken lmao

Honestly the day question tripped me up too when I first lost my job. I kept thinking I had to file on a Monday or something official like that. Nope - you can start your claim any day. What I will say though is that if you ever need to actually TALK to someone at California EDD to sort out questions about your claim schedule or anything that seems off, good luck getting through on the phone. I spent weeks trying. A coworker told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was honestly a game changer - they basically get you connected to a live California EDD agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. There's even a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - worth checking out before you pull your hair out trying to call EDD directly.

Yeah it's totally legit, I was skeptical too at first but it worked for me. Saved me from having to dial EDD over and over and getting hung up on.

seconded, used it when my certification got flagged for no reason and needed to talk to someone fast. way better than the regular phone line

NOBODY EXPLAINS THIS STUFF CLEARLY and it drives me absolutely insane. I remember when I first filed and spent like 3 hours on the EDD website trying to figure out the same exact question. What day do you file for unemployment - seems simple right?? But the site is so confusing with all the different sections and portal logins and it doesn't just say 'hey file whenever, certify on Sundays.' WHY IS THAT SO HARD TO COMMUNICATE

Maya Patel
AuthorRight?? I felt so dumb not being able to find a simple answer. Glad I'm not alone

you're definitely not alone, this system is designed to confuse people i swear

Just chiming in - there's one day-specific thing worth knowing even though the filing itself is flexible. If you're certifying and you earned wages during a week, make sure you're reporting accurately for that specific benefit week. Some people get confused and report the wrong week's wages which causes all kinds of adjudication headaches. California EDD is pretty strict about wage reporting matching up to the correct certification period.

Maya Patel
AuthorI didn't work at all since getting laid off so hopefully that's simpler? Do I still have to answer the wage questions?
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
Yes you still answer them, you just answer no to earnings questions. Keep it simple and accurate. Where people get tripped up is if they do any freelance or gig work even small amounts - all of that needs to be reported.

James Martinez
good point about the gig work thing, that catches a LOT of people off guard

For the weekly certification specifically - Sunday is technically when your new window opens for the prior week but EDD's systems can be slow to update on Sunday mornings. A lot of people find that certifying Sunday afternoon or evening is smoother than right at midnight. I've heard of people having login errors trying to certify too early on Sunday before systems refresh.

AuthorGood to know! I'll try Sunday afternoon then when I get to that point

Yeah that's been my experience after like 8 months of certifying. Sunday around noon or later works pretty reliably.

ok so random q but does it matter what TIME of day you submit the certification or just what day? like if i certify at 11:58pm on sunday is that still counted as sunday
0 coins
Aiden Rodríguez
Time doesn't matter, just the date. As long as you submit before your certification window closes you're good. The window is date-based not hour-based.

ok cool thanks was stressing about that for no reason lol

One more thing that might be helpful for OP since they're brand new - the job search requirement. Starting with your very first week of benefits, California EDD requires you to actively look for work and document your job search activities. Currently you need to make a minimum of 3 job search contacts per week. Keep records of this because EDD can ask you to verify your job search at any time, and if you can't prove it, your benefits can be stopped or you could face an overpayment situation. Also register on CalJOBS (the state employment website) if you haven't already - California EDD often requires it and it can count as one of your job search contacts each week when you update your profile.
0 coins
Maya Patel
AuthorOh wow I didn't know about the job search thing at all. 3 contacts per week means like 3 job applications?
0 coins
Ava Kim
Job applications count, but so do other things like attending a workshop, contacting an employer directly even without a formal application, using employment services, etc. California EDD has a specific list of what qualifies. Applying to 3 jobs per week is the easiest way most people do it and definitely keep a log with dates and company names.

the job search log saved me when they randomly asked me to verify during a claim review. had everything documented and it got resolved fast

Going back to the phone access thing real quick because I see OP is new - California EDD's phone system is notoriously difficult. If anything ever comes up with your claim that you can't resolve online (pending issues, adjudication flags, verification problems) the phone is sometimes the only way to actually fix it. Claimyr at claimyr.com seriously helped me when I was stuck. Don't wait until you're desperate to look into options for reaching a live agent.

yeah the hold times are brutal, i've heard of people waiting 4+ hours

Four hours is real, I've done it. And then sometimes it just disconnects you after all that. Claimyr basically handles the hold queue part for you so you actually get through.

hey OP welcome to the EDD experience lol. my advice after going through this twice now - screenshot EVERYTHING. every certification you submit, every confirmation number, every notice. EDD has been known to lose records and if you don't have your own documentation it becomes your word against theirs which is not a fun situation
0 coins
Maya Patel
AuthorThat's a really good tip, I would not have thought to do that. Starting now!

seriously, i learned the hard way. had a certification dispute and EDD claimed i never submitted for a specific week. had the screenshot and won the case but without it i don't know what would have happened

THIS. document everything always with EDD. they will gaslight you about your own claim history

Something I want to clarify because I've seen bad advice on this floating around - your benefit week for California EDD runs Sunday through Saturday. This is fixed regardless of when you filed your initial claim. So even if you filed on a Thursday, your benefit weeks still run Sun-Sat. Your first benefit week started on the Sunday before or on your claim filing date depending on exact timing. UI Online will show you the exact dates so verify there.
0 coins
Maya Patel
AuthorSo I filed Thursday meaning my first benefit week might have started last Sunday? I need to check UI Online
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
Exactly, log in and look at your claim summary. It will show your benefit year begin date and your first certification period. That'll clear up any confusion about timing.

UI Online has gotten somewhat better about displaying this clearly, they updated the dashboard layout

i was in the same boat as OP like 6 months ago, zero clue how any of this worked. honestly the EDD website FAQ section is better than it used to be but you sometimes have to dig. the YouTube channel for CA EDD also has some decent tutorial videos explaining the certification process step by step if anyone learns better visually

can i ask a slightly different question related to this - if you miss your certification window does your whole claim get cancelled or can you reopen it? asking for a friend who panicked and thought they missed a week
0 coins
Aiden Rodríguez
Missing a week doesn't cancel your claim but it does mean you don't get paid for that week - you can't retroactively certify for a week you missed after the window closes. Your claim itself stays open though and you continue certifying for future weeks. However if you miss multiple weeks in a row EDD may deactivate the claim and you'd need to reopen it.
0 coins
Ethan Anderson
ok that's what i thought but wasn't sure, thanks. and yeah don't miss weeks obviously lol
0 coins
Ava Kim
Adding - if you DO have a legitimate reason you missed a week (hospitalization, extreme circumstances), California EDD has a late certification process but you have to call in and explain. It's not guaranteed approval but it is possible.

The day you file honestly matters less than people think, what matters more is being consistent once you're set up. Miss a certification and you lose that week's money. Report wages wrong and you could end up with an overpayment notice months later demanding you pay back thousands. I've seen it happen to people in my family. The system is very unforgiving about errors even honest ones.

AuthorThat's kind of scary honestly. I'll be really careful

Don't stress too much, just be accurate and keep records and you'll be fine. Most people get through their claim without major issues.

overpayments are no joke though, EDD will come after you hard for repayment even years later

late to this thread but wanted to add - if you set up text or email notifications through your UI Online account EDD will actually send you reminders when your certification window opens. makes it way harder to forget to certify. took me 3 months of filing before i figured out i could turn those on

Maya Patel
AuthorOh that's super helpful! Where do I find that setting?

Log into UI Online, go to your profile settings, there should be a notification preferences section. You can set it up for both email and text alerts.

i have a dumb question - do you have to be currently unemployed to file or can you file while still technically employed but like on your last week? my company gave me a 2 week notice that they're closing my position
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
You can file your initial claim before your actual last day of work - California EDD recommends filing as soon as you know you'll be separated from your job. Your benefit year start date will be set, but your first benefit week can't start until after your last day of employment. Filing early just prevents delays.
0 coins
Olivia Harris
ok good because i wasn't sure if filing while still employed would flag something
0 coins
Aiden Rodríguez
No flag for that, EDD just needs to confirm your separation date with your employer. Filing proactively is actually the smart move.

One last plug for the phone access resource since this thread has a lot of new filers - if your claim ever gets flagged for identity verification or adjudication after you file, the online tools sometimes aren't enough and you'll need to speak with an actual EDD representative. The regular call line can be brutal to navigate. Claimyr (claimyr.com) is genuinely useful for that situation - check out their demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 to see what the process looks like. Better to know about it before you need it than to be scrambling.

can we just take a moment to appreciate how absurd it is that figuring out what day to file for unemployment requires reading a 20-comment forum thread?? the EDD website should have a giant button that says START HERE FOR NEW CLAIMANTS that walks you through everything step by step. instead its just this maze of links and PDFs from 2019

To wrap things up for OP with a clean summary since a lot got covered here: 1. You can file your initial California EDD claim any day of the week - no specific day required 2. Your benefit weeks run Sunday through Saturday regardless of when you filed 3. You can certify for each completed benefit week starting the following Sunday 4. Your first certification will likely cover two weeks due to the mandatory one-week waiting period 5. Job search - minimum 3 contacts per week, document everything 6. Register on CalJOBS as part of your job search compliance 7. Set up notifications in UI Online so you don't miss your certification window 8. Screenshot confirmations of every certification you submit You've got this! The first few weeks feel overwhelming but it becomes routine pretty quickly.

Great summary. The only thing I'd add is check UI Online regularly in the first few weeks - EDD sometimes sends notices about eligibility issues that have short response deadlines, and missing those can complicate your claim significantly.
