Weeks showing 'disqualified' despite being laid off - no money and panicking!
I'm seriously freaking out right now. I just checked my UI Online account and both of my first two certified weeks are showing as 'disqualified'?! How is that even possible? I was laid off from my healthcare admin job last month (downsizing) and have proof from my employer. I've been applying to at least 3-4 jobs every week and keeping detailed records like they asked. I'm completely broke - maxed out credit cards paying March rent and now April is coming due. I literally have $47 to my name and was counting on this money. Does anyone know why they would disqualify me when I should clearly qualify? Is this some kind of error? Do I need to appeal this? I can't wait another 2 weeks for payment - I'm already behind on everything and my anxiety is through the roof.

Same thing happened to me in January! Turns out it was because I answered one of the certification questions wrong - the one about being 'able and available' for work. I had a doctor's appointment one day and marked that I wasn't available that day. BIG mistake. Call EDD immediately and explain the situation. They can often fix it over the phone if it's a simple error.

•OMG that might be it! I had a family emergency one day and marked that I wasn't available for ONE day out of the two weeks. I didn't think that would disqualify me completely... Is this fixable or am I screwed???

The 'disqualified' status usually means one of four things: 1. You answered a certification question in a way that triggered disqualification 2. There's an eligibility issue they need to verify 3. They need additional identity verification 4. There's a discrepancy between your information and what your employer reported You need to contact EDD right away. They should be able to tell you exactly why you were disqualified and how to fix it. For many issues, they can resolve it during the phone call if it's just a misunderstanding or minor error.

•Thank you for this info. I've been trying to call all morning and just keep getting the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and then it hangs up. Is there any other way to reach them?

•Ugh this is so frustrating. How long did it take you to get through?

•Same experience here - 2 days of constant redials. Best time to call is right when they open or around 11:30 when the morning callers are wrapping up. So annoying!!!

After trying to call EDD for weeks with no luck, I finally tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to EDD in about 20 minutes. Basically they call EDD for you using their system until they get through, then connect you. Saved me SO much frustration. They have a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The agent told me that my disqualification was because I answered incorrectly about being available for work (had a scheduled interview during one day). They fixed it right away and my payment was released the next day. Definitely worth getting through to them!

Before you panic, double-check that you didn't just misread your UI Online account. Sometimes it will show "Disqualification" for a specific question, not for the entire week. Look at the Payment Activity section to see if it shows a different status for the overall claim. But if it truly says both weeks are disqualified, then you absolutely need to speak with an EDD rep to find out why.

•Just double-checked and it definitely says "Disqualified" for both weeks in the Payment Activity section. No payment issued. ðŸ˜

the EDD system is DELIBERATELY DESIGNED to make ppl give up!!!1! they WANT to disqualify u so they don't have to pay!!! i got disqualified for some BS reason too and had to FIGHT for weeks to get my money. the whole system is corrupt af

•While the system can be frustrating, most disqualifications are due to specific eligibility issues that can be resolved. The vast majority of eligible claims do get paid once any issues are cleared up. It's important to stay persistent but also to understand that there are legitimate eligibility rules that EDD must follow by law.

I know how you feel. I was so stressed when this happened to me I couldn't sleep for days. Just remember that most disqualifications can be fixed! The most important thing is getting through to an actual person at EDD.

So I had a similar issue last year when I was between nursing jobs. Don't just call the main EDD number. Try the technical support line instead (it's somewhere on the Contact EDD page). Sometimes it's easier to get through, and while they're supposed to only handle technical issues, the person I spoke with was nice enough to transfer me directly to a claims specialist instead of making me call the main line again.

•That's a great tip, thank you! I'll try that tomorrow morning if I can't get through on the main line today.

Update us when you find out what caused the disqualification. It'll help others who might run into the same issue. And don't worry - this happens quite often and is usually fixable. Did you receive any notices in your UI Online inbox? Sometimes they send a DE 4800 explaining the disqualification reason, though it can take several days to appear.

•I managed to get through to EDD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out it WAS because I marked one day as "not available" due to a family emergency. The rep explained that I should have still marked "yes" to being available and then explained the limited circumstance in the additional information section. She was able to fix it right there on the phone and said my payment should be processed within 24-48 hours. Such a relief! Thank you all for your help!
