Lost job in November, need help filing for unemployment. What docs do I need? How to calculate benefits?
Hey everyone, I just lost my job and I'm trying to file for unemployment. I'm feeling pretty lost and could use some help. My last day was in November and I'm not sure where to start. Does anyone have experience with this process? What documents do I need? How do I calculate my benefits? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your job loss. Here's a quick rundown of what you need to do: 1. Gather your docs: Social Security number, employment history, and last employer's info. 2. Calculate benefits: Usually based on your earnings from the last 18 months. 3. File online: Use your state's unemployment website. 4. Be patient: The process can take a few weeks. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Do you know how long it usually takes to get approved?

It can vary, but typically 2-3 weeks. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time while you wait!

Don't forget to report any part-time or gig work you do while waiting for approval. It can affect your benefits!

ugh, good luck dealing with the unemployment office. I've been trying to get through to them for weeks and its impossible to reach anyone on the phone 🤬

I feel you! The phone lines are always jammed. I found a workaround tho - there's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the menu, waits on hold, and then connects you when an agent picks up. Costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it worked for me. Saved me from pulling my hair out lol

$20 just to talk to someone? The system is so broken 🤦♂️

Make sure you check your eligibility first! Each state has different rules. Also, start looking for work ASAP - some states require you to prove you're job hunting.

Pro tip: Set up direct deposit if you can. The debit cards they sometimes use can have fees and are a pain to deal with.

This! 💯 Those debit cards are the worst. I got hit with so many random fees.

Anyone else notice that the unemployment website always seems to crash right when you need it most? 🙄 It's like they're running it on a potato or something.

LOL a potato would probably work better 🥔💻

For real tho, try using the site late at night or early morning. Less traffic = fewer crashes

Hey OP, don't forget to factor in taxes! You can choose to have them withheld now or pay them later. Trust me, you don't want a surprise tax bill next year 😬

idk if this helps, but I found some good YouTube tutorials on filling out the application. Sometimes seeing it visually makes it easier to understand.

That's a great idea! Do you have any specific channels you'd recommend?

I don't remember the exact ones, but if you search "how to file for unemployment in [your state]" you should find some good ones!

Just a heads up, with all the layoffs happening, the system is super backed up. Might take longer than usual to get approved. Hang in there!

Quick question for the group - has anyone successfully appealed a denial? I got turned down and I'm not sure if it's worth fighting.

I did! It took forever, but I eventually got approved. Make sure you have all your documentation ready.

Remember to certify every week, even if you haven't been approved yet! You can get backpay for those weeks once you're in the system.
