Just lost my job - need help filing for unemployment with EDD

Hey everyone, I just lost my job last week and I need to file for unemployment. I've never done this before and I'm feeling pretty lost. Does anyone have experience with this process? What should I expect when I call the unemployment office? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your job loss. Here's a quick rundown of what you'll need: • Your last employer's info • Reason for job separation • Social Security number • Driver's license or state ID • Employment history for the last 18 months When you call, be prepared to wait. The lines are usually busy. Have all your info ready and be patient. Good luck!

This is great advice! I'd add: write down your questions beforehand. It's easy to forget stuff when you're nervous on the call.

Ugh, the waiting is the WORST. I was on hold for 3 hours last month 😫

Thanks so much for this! Really helpful. Any idea how long the whole process usually takes?

It can vary, but usually a few weeks from filing to receiving your first payment. Just make sure you certify for benefits every two weeks once you're approved!

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

20 bucks? That's steep. Why should we have to pay to access a government service? 🙄

I get the skepticism, but it's 100% legit. Saved me days of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

How long did it take for them to get through?

It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to do anything. Just got a call when they reached an agent. Way better than being stuck to my phone all day!

Anyone else feel like the whole unemployment system is designed to be as frustrating as possible? It's like they WANT us to give up 🤬

Conspiracy theory: it's intentionally bad so fewer people claim benefits 🤔

C'mon guys, it's not that bad. Just follow the instructions and be patient.

Don't forget to check if you're eligible for any additional assistance programs while you're at it. Food stamps, rental assistance, etc. Every little bit helps when you're out of work.

Just a heads up, with all the layoffs lately, the system is super backed up. Might take longer than usual to process claims. Hang in there!
