Is EDD SDI callback feature reliable? Anyone used it successfully?
Been stuck on hold with SDI for almost 2 hours (trying to check on my disability claim after surgery). The automated system just offered me the callback option where they supposedly keep my place in line and call me back later. Has anyone actually used this feature successfully? I'm super nervous about losing my spot after waiting this long! I have so many questions about my benefit calculation and I NEED to talk to someone today. Really hesitant to trust the callback system since everything else with EDD seems to be a disaster... 😬

•Ugh, that's exactly what I was afraid of! Did you end up having to call back and start the wait all over again?

I've used the callback feature three times for my SDI claim, and they actually called back every time. My tips: 1) Make sure your phone accepts calls from unknown/blocked numbers, 2) Keep your phone nearby and volume up - they usually called within 1-2 hours, 3) Have your claim number and all documents ready when they call back because they jump right into helping you. The SDI callback system is separate from regular unemployment and seems to work much better in my experience.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed response! This makes me feel better about using it. I'll make sure my phone isn't on silent mode and keep it near me. Did they tell you approximately how long the wait would be when you requested the callback?

•Were you calling the SDI line specifically? The regular UI line and the SDI line have different callback systems. The SDI one generally works better in my experience.

I've tried both staying on hold and the callback feature with SDI. The callback actually worked for me twice, but it took about 3-4 hours each time (not the 30-45 minutes they estimated lol). Still better than being stuck listening to that horrible hold music though! Just make sure your voicemail is set up in case you miss the call.

•That's good to know! I'll make sure my voicemail is set up properly. Did they leave a direct number to call back if you missed them?

I've had mixed results with the SDI callback system. Out of 4 attempts, I received callbacks 3 times. The one time it failed was on a Friday afternoon - I suspect they got too backed up before the weekend. If you're calling early in the day and it's not a Friday, your chances are better. Also, I've found that selecting the option for "questions about your claim status" rather than "general questions" seems to get prioritized in their system. If you're really concerned about your benefit calculation, you can also try sending a secure message through your SDI Online account. Sometimes they respond faster that way for calculation questions specifically.

•This is really helpful, thank you! It is Thursday afternoon, so hopefully that's not too bad. I did try the secure message system last week but haven't heard back yet - that's why I'm trying to call now.

i tried reaching the edd for WEEKS with no luck until i used this service called Claimyr. they got me through to an actual person at edd in under 20 minutes when i'd been trying for days on my own! check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km their website is claimyr.com - honestly was worth it after all the frustration with the regular phone system. i dont know if they work for SDI claims too but might be worth checking

•i used it for regular unemployment but their website says they help with all EDD departments including disability! might be worth looking into if the callback doesn't work for you

So I'm an SDI claims specialist (not for EDD but for a major employer) and I can tell you that the callback system for SDI is generally more reliable than the regular UI one. This is because SDI has dedicated staff and lower call volumes compared to regular unemployment. HOWEVER - it definitely depends on the time of day and day of week. My advice: if you're calling on Monday or Tuesday, the callback system is often overwhelmed and less reliable. Wednesday-Thursday is your best bet. Fridays they start dropping callbacks after about 2pm as they won't process them after hours or weekends. Also keep in mind that if you requested callback regarding benefit calculations, they'll need to have a Tier 2 specialist call you, which might take longer than general claim questions. This is probably why some people have very different experiences with the callback reliability.

•Thank you for this insider perspective! It's Thursday afternoon, so sounds like I'm in a decent window. My question is about benefit calculation (they seem to have used the wrong base period), so I'll be prepared for potentially a longer wait for that Tier 2 specialist.

•Yes! They actually called back about 2 hours later. The rep was super helpful and fixed the base period issue. So the callback system does work, at least for SDI!

•That's awesome to hear! I'm dealing with a similar base period issue right now. How long did the actual call take once they reached you? And did they fix it immediately or did you have to wait for processing?

•@Sean Kelly The actual call took about 15 minutes once they reached me. The rep was able to fix the base period issue immediately in their system - she said it was a common error where they automatically used the most recent quarters instead of looking at when I actually became disabled. She updated it right away and said I should see the corrected benefit amount in my account within 24-48 hours. Much easier than I expected!

•@Edison Estevez Wait, I think you might have mixed up responses there - that sounds like Daniel s'experience, not yours! But that s'great to hear the callback worked and the base period got fixed so quickly. I m'definitely going to try the callback system now instead of staying on hold for hours.

•@Jamal Washington You re'absolutely right - I got confused there! I was thinking of Daniel s'experience since I was following this thread closely. Thanks for catching that. It s'really encouraging to hear these success stories with the SDI callback system. I ve'been hesitant to use it myself but seeing all these positive outcomes makes me feel more confident about trying it next time instead of suffering through the hold music for hours.

I just went through this exact situation last week! I was terrified to use the callback feature after reading horror stories online, but I'm so glad I did. Called the SDI line around 11am on a Wednesday, was told the wait was 90+ minutes, opted for callback instead. They called me back exactly 2 hours and 15 minutes later. The rep was amazing - helped me understand my benefit calculation and even caught an error in my claim that would have delayed my payments. My advice: definitely use it if you're calling mid-week and it's before 3pm. Make sure your phone is charged and nearby! The SDI callback system really does seem more reliable than the regular unemployment one.
