Can't get through to EDD - 'max callers reached' error when trying to file SDI claim
I'm absolutely at my wit's end trying to reach someone at EDD about my disability claim! I've been calling religiously at 8am when they first open, then basically every hour until they close at 5pm. For THREE STRAIGHT DAYS I've gotten nothing but the dreaded 'we've reached our maximum number of callers' message. Not even the option to wait on hold! Whenever I try to file my SDI claim online, I keep hitting some kind of error code that doesn't even explain what's wrong. The system just kicks me out and tells me to call... which is impossible! I need to get this disability claim started ASAP since I can't work and bills are piling up. Has anyone successfully gotten through to a real person at EDD lately? Any tricks or specific times that work better? I'm desperate for any advice at this point!

I had the same nightmare last month with my SDI claim. The error online is probably because there's something in your work history or medical info that the automated system can't process. Those always require talking to an actual person. What worked for me was calling exactly at 8:01am (not 8:00 - everyone calls then) and using the option for general questions rather than disability specific. Once I got a regular EDD rep, I explained my situation and they transferred me to the right department. Still had to wait about 40 minutes but at least I got in the queue!

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try the 8:01 timing tomorrow and use the general questions option. Did you have to explain why you were calling the general line instead of disability when you got through?

A few things to try: 1. Thursday and Friday tend to have lower call volumes than Monday-Wednesday 2. Try calling between 1:15-2:30pm - many agents return from lunch and the system often opens up briefly 3. The SDI department has a separate line from regular unemployment. Make sure you're calling 1-800-480-3287 specifically for disability claims 4. For the online error, try using a different browser or clearing your cookies/cache. Sometimes the EDD website has compatibility issues with certain browsers. 5. If your disability is expected to last more than 8 days, consider having your doctor submit the initial medical certification by mail while you continue trying to complete your part by phone.

•This is super helpful information! I had no idea there might be better times during the week. I've been calling the right number, but I haven't tried the afternoon window you mentioned. My doctor has submitted her part already, so I'm halfway there. I'll definitely try your suggestions!

Look into using Claimyr if you're still struggling after trying those tips. It basically calls EDD for you and then connects you when it gets through. It saved me hours of frustration with my claim. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It's the only thing that worked for me after two weeks of trying everything else. Got connected to an EDD rep in about 25 minutes instead of endless busy signals.

•It definitely worked for me! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days. The service just keeps dialing for you until it gets through, then calls you back when it connects. Saved me from having to redial hundreds of times.

The EDD calling system is broken by design. They don't have enough staff to handle the call volume but won't admit it. I've been dealing with them for years and it NEVER gets better regardless of what politicians promise.

•It really does feel broken on purpose sometimes! I understand they're probably understaffed, but there has to be a better system than just telling everyone to call back later.

Quick question - what exact error code are you getting online? Some of them have simple fixes. For example, Error E2416 usually means your identity verification needs to be completed first through ID.me before you can file SDI.

•It's showing Error A1104 - something about 'unable to process your request at this time' and then tells me to call. I did complete my ID.me verification last year when I had a brief unemployment period, so that part should be done already.

•Ah, A1104 usually means there's a discrepancy between your work history data and what you're entering for the disability claim. Definitely needs a human to review. But at least now you know you HAVE to get through by phone - the online system won't work for your specific situation.

I was in your exact situation last month trying to file an SDI claim for my back injury. After trying for days to call, i finally got through using the Claimyr service someone else mentioned. took about 30 mins but finally talked to someone who fixed my claim issue on the spot. the problem was that i had wages reported in two different quarters that were conflicting so the system couldn't auto-process my claim. needed a human to override it.

•That's interesting - I worked two jobs last year so maybe I have the same wage reporting issue. I'm going to try the tips for calling directly tomorrow morning, but if that doesn't work, I'll check out that service. Thanks for sharing your experience!

One more suggestion - if you can't get through by phone after trying the methods suggested here, you can request assistance through your state assembly member's office. They have dedicated EDD liaisons who can sometimes help resolve issues when regular channels aren't working. Just Google "[your county] state assembly member" to find yours.

•I had no idea this was an option! If I'm still stuck by the end of the week, I'll definitely try reaching out to my assembly member. Thank you so much for all the helpful information.

Did you manage to get through yet? Just checking back because I know how stressful these disability claim issues can be when you're unable to work.

•Yes! Finally got through this morning using the 8:01am trick and the general questions line. Waited about 30 minutes, but finally spoke to someone who could help. You were right - there was a conflict with my work history data that was causing the online error. They fixed it and my claim is processing now! Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!
