Back to California Unemployment

Charlie Yang

If I'm injured and can't work can I get California EDD unemployment benefits?

So I threw out my back at the gym two weeks ago and my doctor cleared me from working for at least 6 more weeks. I'm a warehouse supervisor and my job is pretty physical so there's no way I can do light duty or anything like that right now. I started looking into whether I can file for unemployment through California EDD since I have no income coming in and my sick days ran out already. Someone at the doctor's office mentioned I might qualify but I honestly have no idea if being injured and physically unable to work disqualifies me from UI benefits. From what I've read online the requirements say you have to be 'able and available to work' which... I'm not right now. So does that mean I'm automatically disqualified? Is there something else I should be filing for instead? I'm stressing out because rent is coming up and I have zero clarity on what programs I can actually access right now.

Hey so this is actually a really important distinction that trips a lot of people up. If your injury happened OUTSIDE of work, California EDD unemployment is probably not the right path for you right now. The able and available requirement is a hard rule - you have to be physically capable of accepting work to receive UI benefits. Being medically cleared from work by a doctor basically disqualifies you from regular unemployment. What you actually want to look into is California State Disability Insurance, which is SDI. It's a completely separate program from unemployment but it's also run through California EDD. SDI pays a percentage of your wages when you can't work due to a non-work-related illness or injury. You've almost certainly been paying into it through payroll deductions if you've been working in California, it shows up on your paystub as 'CASDI' or similar. File for that ASAP because there's a 7-day waiting period before benefits kick in and you've already been out two weeks.

Wait seriously? So I've been wasting time looking into unemployment when SDI is what I need? I had no idea these were two different things under the same agency. How do I actually file for SDI, is it through the same myEDD portal?

0 coins

Yes same portal at myedd.edd.ca.gov - when you log in there's an option to file a disability insurance claim. Your doctor will also need to fill out a medical certification portion so make sure to give them a heads up because that can sometimes delay things.

0 coins

This happened to me last year, I made the same mistake and filed for unemployment first then had to switch to SDI. Definitely start with SDI if you have a doctor's note saying you can't work.

0 coins

just to add to what the person above said - if your injury DID happen at work thats completely different and workers comp is what you want not EDD at all. workers comp pays your medical bills AND lost wages. so the program depends on WHERE you got hurt not just that you got hurt

0 coins

Mine was definitely not work related so workers comp doesn't apply here. But good to know that distinction.

0 coins

yeah and you cant double dip either - you cant collect workers comp AND SDI at the same time for the same injury, edd will figure it out and you could end up with an overpayment situation

I went through almost this exact situation about 8 months ago. Tore my meniscus playing basketball, couldn't stand for more than like 20 minutes. I initially called California EDD to ask whether I qualified for anything and honestly the call center experience was brutal. Kept getting disconnected or just waiting on hold forever. Eventually someone in my neighborhood told me about a service called Claimyr. Basically it navigates the California EDD phone system and gets you connected to an actual agent without you sitting there redialing for hours. I was skeptical but I was desperate. Went to claimyr.com, there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 showing how it works. Got through to an EDD agent same day and she walked me through exactly which program I qualified for. Turns out SDI was correct for my situation. Just sharing because calling EDD to confirm your specific situation is honestly the best move and Claimyr made that actually possible.

0 coins

I've been trying to call EDD for two days and keep either getting a busy signal or getting disconnected after waiting. I'll check this out, I really need to talk to someone who can look at my account specifically.

0 coins

claimyr actually works? i always thought those kinds of services were sketchy

0 coins

Yeah I was skeptical too but it's legit. You're just getting connected to a real EDD agent faster, that's all it does. Way better than redialing 47 times.

0 coins

gonna look into this too because I have a completely different issue with my claim and can't get anyone on the phone either

0 coins

NOBODY TELLS YOU ANY OF THIS when you first get hurt omg. I spent like 3 days convinced I was filing for unemployment and it was only when the EDD rep finally told me I was ineligible that I found out about SDI. The system is so confusing because both programs live under the same agency but they're completely separate with different rules different eligibility different everything. It shouldn't be this hard to figure out which program you even need.

0 coins

This is exactly how I feel. I've been reading EDD's website for hours and it's not super clear unless you already know to look for SDI specifically.

0 coins

real talk the EDD website has improved but it still assumes you already know what program you need which defeats the purpose

Let me give you a cleaner breakdown since there's a lot of info flying around: **If you're injured and CANNOT work at all:** - File for SDI (State Disability Insurance) through California EDD - Pays roughly 60-70% of your wages depending on your income bracket - Requires doctor certification of your disability - 7-day unpaid waiting period - Max duration is 52 weeks **If you're recovering and CAN do some work (even part-time or modified duty):** - You might be able to file for partial unemployment if your employer reduces your hours - Still need to be able and available for work though **If the injury happened AT work:** - That's workers' compensation territory through your employer's insurance - Completely separate from EDD For your situation as you've described it - non-work injury, total inability to work - SDI is clearly the right program. File immediately, the 7-day waiting period starts from the first day you were unable to work.

0 coins

Thank you this is the clearest explanation I've gotten. So my 7 days have already passed since I've been out for two weeks, does that mean I've already served the waiting period?

0 coins

Yes exactly - the waiting period was already served during those first 7 days you were out. So once your claim is processed you should be eligible for benefits going back to day 8 of your disability. That's why it's good you're filing now rather than waiting longer.

0 coins

this breakdown should be pinned honestly

0 coins

wait so if you can do light duty work at a reduced wage can you get partial SDI or is it all or nothing? asking for a friend who twisted her ankle and can work from home some days

0 coins

one thing people forget - you only have ONE YEAR from the start of your disability to file an SDI claim. miss that window and youre out of luck. most people dont get close to that deadline but just fyi dont sit on this forever

0 coins

Definitely won't be waiting that long, I need money now lol

0 coins

lol fair enough just covering the bases. good luck with the claim

0 coins

I work in HR and just want to confirm everything being said here is accurate. SDI is the correct program for non-occupational injuries that prevent you from working. One thing I'd add - when your doctor fills out the medical certification, make sure the dates align with when you actually stopped working. Discrepancies between what the doctor certifies and what you report as your last day of work can cause your claim to go into review which delays payment significantly.

0 coins

Oh that's a good heads up, I'll double check with my doctor that we have the same dates. My last actual day of work was the 14th.

0 coins

Perfect. And make sure you get the doctor to certify electronically through SDI Online if possible - it speeds up processing compared to paper forms.

0 coins

can confirm the date mismatch thing causes issues, happened to a coworker and she waited an extra 3 weeks for it to get sorted out

0 coins

slightly off topic but does anyone know if you can collect SDI and still have your employer pay you their sick leave at the same time? my company has a separate sick pay policy and I dont want to accidentally double collect and get hit with an overpayment later

0 coins

This is actually important - if your employer pays you full wages during your disability leave, you generally cannot collect SDI for those same days. However if they pay partial wages or use a supplemental plan that coordinates with SDI, it works differently. You'd want to report any employer payments when filing to avoid an overpayment situation.

0 coins

ok got it so I need to disclose whatever my employer pays me. thanks

0 coins

Correct. EDD takes coordination of benefits seriously. Always disclose, always.

0 coins

not gonna lie i filed for regular unemployment instead of SDI when I had a surgery two years ago and they denied me within like 10 days. had to start the whole SDI process over from scratch. lost almost a month of potential benefits from filing the wrong thing. please file SDI if you physically cannot work, dont make my mistake

0 coins

That's rough, sorry that happened to you. I'm definitely going straight to SDI based on everything people are saying here.

0 coins

good luck! the SDI process was actually faster for me than unemployment had been in the past so hopefully it goes smooth for you

0 coins

Anyone else find it wild that so many people don't know about SDI until they actually need it? I've been working in California my whole career and had no clue I was paying into it until I had a health situation myself. They really should explain this stuff better when you start a job.

0 coins

THANK YOU. My employer never once explained what CASDI on my paystub even was. Just assumed it was some random tax.

0 coins

same honestly. i thought it was just another payroll deduction going nowhere until i actually needed it

0 coins

It's wild because it's genuinely one of the more useful benefits California has but people just don't know it exists until they google frantically while injured lol

0 coins

Going back to OP's question - I also want to mention that if your injury eventually resolves and you're cleared to work but then your employer doesn't have a position for you anymore or lays you off, THAT'S when regular unemployment might apply. So SDI now, and if your employment situation changes during your recovery, you may have options with UI later. The two programs can be sequential in some cases.

0 coins

Oh interesting, I hadn't thought about that scenario. My employer has been decent about it but I guess you never know how things shake out after a long absence.

0 coins

Yeah it's worth knowing. If you end up losing your job while on SDI or right after, you can potentially transition to unemployment once you're medically cleared and able/available to work again.

0 coins

how long does SDI actually take to approve? I know edd unemployment can take weeks sometimes with adjudication and all that, is SDI similar?

0 coins

SDI processing times vary but California EDD aims to process complete claims within 14 days. 'Complete' means they have both your claim AND your doctor's certification. The doctor portion is often the bottleneck - if your doctor is slow submitting their part, your whole claim sits waiting. Definitely follow up with your doctor's office to make sure they submitted.

0 coins

ok 14 days is not terrible. better than the unemployment situation I had last year that took 6 weeks

0 coins

My SDI was approved in about 10 days when my doctor did everything electronically. Paper certifications took longer for people I know.

0 coins

For anyone in this thread struggling to reach EDD regardless of whether it's about SDI or unemployment - Claimyr seriously changed the experience for me. I know I mentioned it above but I want to emphasize it because the EDD phone system is genuinely one of the most frustrating things to navigate. Check out claimyr.com or watch the demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - it's the difference between getting an actual answer same day vs. spending a week trying to get through.

0 coins

ok adding this to my list of things to try because I've been trying to call about my own claim for days

0 coins

second this, I wish I had known about it when I was dealing with my surgery situation and trying to figure out what program to even file for

0 coins

random question - does OP's employer have to hold their job while theyre on SDI leave? or can they just replace them

0 coins

This depends on several factors - how large the employer is, how long you've been there, and whether you qualify for FMLA or CFRA protections. California's CFRA provides up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave for medical conditions if you work for an employer with 5+ employees and have worked there at least 12 months. SDI provides the income replacement piece while CFRA provides the job protection piece - they work together.

0 coins

ohh ok so they're separate protections. good to know

0 coins

Yeah my employer has like 200 employees so I should be covered under CFRA. That's actually a relief, one less thing to worry about.

0 coins

Came here with a similar question about a family member and this thread answered literally everything I was wondering about. Bookmarking this for future reference. Hope OP gets their SDI sorted quickly.

0 coins

Thanks! I'm about to go file the SDI claim right now. This thread was way more helpful than an hour of googling.

0 coins

good luck! the SDI application online is pretty straightforward once you know that's what you need

0 coins

idk if this helps anyone but you can also call the SDI specific line instead of the general EDD number. its 1-800-480-3287. sometimes its easier to get through on that dedicated line than the main EDD number but honestly its still a crapshoot. Claimyr ended up being how I got through when I needed real answers about my SDI claim status - way less headache

0 coins

helpful to have the direct number, saving this

0 coins

I'll try the direct number first and if that doesn't work I'll use the Claimyr option. Thanks for sharing both.

0 coins

yeah try the direct line first for sure, just know the hold times can still be rough depending on when you call

0 coins

Hope everything works out for you OP. For what its worth I was on SDI for 10 weeks after my appendix surgery last year and the benefit really helped. It's not your full salary but it kept me from completely falling apart financially while I recovered. The system isn't perfect but SDI actually works if you file correctly.

0 coins

That's really reassuring to hear honestly. 60-70% of my wages isn't great but it's a heck of a lot better than zero. Thanks for sharing that.

0 coins

Exactly. And you can sometimes use PTO or vacation to supplement if your employer allows it, just make sure to disclose it to avoid overpayment issues

0 coins

Wait I'm confused about something - if SDI is run by the same EDD agency as unemployment, why does it seem like nobody knows about it? Shouldn't they be promoting it more

0 coins

California EDD handles like 4 different programs - UI, SDI, PFL (Paid Family Leave), and a few others. They're all housed under the same agency but they're genuinely separate programs with separate rules. The website tries to explain all of them but it can be overwhelming.

0 coins

Exactly this. The EDD umbrella is huge and people only know about unemployment because that's what gets talked about. SDI and PFL are underutilized because people literally don't know they exist.

0 coins

this is kind of insane honestly. like this is money people have literally paid into and they don't know they can access it

0 coins

Quick summary for anyone who finds this thread later: - Injured and CANNOT work (non-work injury): File SDI at myedd.edd.ca.gov - Injured at WORK: File workers' compensation through your employer - Unemployed and able/available to work: File regular UI unemployment through California EDD - You CANNOT collect regular unemployment if you are medically unable to work - SDI has a 7-day waiting period but pays roughly 60-70% of wages - Doctor certification is required and is often the slowest part of the process - File ASAP - benefits can only be backdated to your disability start date Hope this helps OP and anyone else who lands here searching for answers.

0 coins

Just submitted my SDI claim online. The application took about 25 minutes and it seemed pretty straightforward. Now waiting on my doctor to submit their certification. Thanks everyone in this thread for steering me in the right direction, I would have spent another week going down the wrong path without this.

0 coins

Good luck! Keep an eye on your SDI Online account for the doctor certification status - you can see when they submit it.

0 coins

Great outcome. And seriously if you run into any issues or your claim gets flagged for any reason, having the ability to actually talk to an EDD agent matters a lot. Claimyr at claimyr.com is worth bookmarking for that situation - saved me a ton of frustration when my SDI had a verification issue mid-claim.
