How to help son with DI claim? Need advice on forms, online process, and getting POA

Hey everyone, I need some advice. My son has a disability and can't fill out the DI forms himself. I want to help him with his claim, but I'm not sure where to start. What steps do I need to take? Are there specific forms I should be looking at? Can I still do this online for him? Also, how do I get authorization to act on his behalf? Any help would be appreciated!

I found a way to solve disability claim authorization issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IXLmQGPPdE

I've been through this process before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all necessary information: personal details, employment history, and medical records. 2. Fill out the Claim for Disability Insurance (DI) Benefits form online. It's called DE 2501. 3. Get legal authorization to act on your son's behalf. You'll probably need a Power of Attorney (POA). 4. Make a list of questions or issues you want to discuss with the agent. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info on any of these steps.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Do you know how long the POA process usually takes?

It can vary, but usually takes a few weeks. You might want to consult with a lawyer to speed things up. They can help draft the document properly.

Just a heads up, make sure you get a 'durable' POA. It stays valid even if your son becomes incapacitated. Learned that the hard way 😓

ugh, the DI system is such a nightmare. I've been trying to help my sister for months and we're still stuck. Good luck, OP!

Have you guys tried calling? Sometimes talking to a real person helps cut through the red tape.

Hey, I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? 🤔

Why should we have to pay extra just to talk to someone? The system is so broken 😤

I get it, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Time is money, ya know? 🤷‍♂️

Pro tip: Keep DETAILED records of everything. Every call, every form, every piece of mail. You never know when you'll need to reference something.

Has anyone had experience with getting a POA for someone with a mental disability? My brother has schizophrenia and I'm not sure how to approach this.

You might need to look into conservatorship instead of POA in that case. It's a bit more involved but could be necessary.

Oh man, that sounds complicated. Guess I've got some research to do. Thanks for the tip!

Yo, has anyone tried using AI to fill out these forms? I bet it could do a better job than half the bureaucrats working there 🤣

Bruh, don't even joke about that. Last thing we need is more automation messing things up 🙅‍♂️

lmao imagine an AI trying to navigate the DI website. It'd probably short circuit 🤖💥

PSA: There's a free legal aid clinic downtown that helps with disability claims. They might be able to help you with the POA stuff too. I'll try to find the contact info and post it later.
