How to cancel EDD UI claim to file for disability instead? Urgent help needed
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I filed for unemployment at the end of June, but then I realized I needed to file for disability instead. So I went ahead and filed for disability about a week later in July. Now I'm trying to cancel my UI claim so my disability claim can go through. Has anyone been in this situation before? Any advice on how to make sure my UI claim gets canceled ASAP?

I had a similar issue last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your info: dates you filed both claims, any confirmation numbers, etc. 2. Call EDD and explain you need to cancel your UI claim 3. Be super clear about why - mention you filed for disability after 4. Get a confirmation number or email about the cancellation 5. Follow up in writing (email or letter) to have a paper trail. Good luck! The system is a nightmare but stay persistent!

β’Thanks for the detailed advice! Did you have any trouble getting through on the phone? I've been trying for days with no luck π«

β’Oh yeah, getting through is the worst part. I had to call like 50 times before I got through. Try calling right when they open or just before they close. Sometimes that works better.

β’This is solid advice. I'd add: document EVERYTHING. Write down who you talked to, when, and what they said. You might need it later if there's any confusion.

β’Great tips! I would also suggest considering reaching out to a local advocate or legal aid service for additional support if you're struggling.

Have you tried canceling online? There should be an option to withdraw your claim on the EDD website. Might be faster than calling.

β’I tried that but it didn't work for me. The website kept giving me an error. Guess I'm stuck with calling π

I feel your pain, OP. The system is so broken. I've been waiting 3 months for my claim to be processed. It's like they forget we have bills to pay π€

Have you tried reaching out to your local state representative? Sometimes they can help push things through faster. Worth a shot!

β’Ooh, I hadn't thought of that. How do I find out who my rep is?

β’Just google '[your city] state representative'. They usually have a constituent services office that can help with stuff like this. They've saved my butt more than once!

Have you considered just letting both claims go through and seeing what happens? Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll catch the error on their end. π€·ββοΈ

To resolve your issue efficiently, contacting EDD and explaining your situation clearly is crucial. Ensure you gather all your claim related information such as the dates and any confirmation details before calling. You can attempt to cancel your unemployment insurance (UI) claim through their phone lines or website, although both may require persistence given the current backlog many departments face. In case you face prolonged issues, consider using services like Claimyr which some users have found helpful, albeit at a cost. Alternatively, engaging with a local state representative can sometimes expedite processes, as they can apply additional pressure on governmental departments. Remember, while these processes can be frustrating, taking the correct legal steps is essential to prevent potential complications or accusations of fraudulent activity. Patience and persistence will be your best allies here, and documenting your interactions can provide solid proof of your efforts if needed.

Unpopular opinion: despite all its flaws, we're lucky to have an unemployment/disability system at all. Some countries don't even have this safety net.

Protip: If you can't get through on the main line, try calling some of the other EDD numbers (like the employer line) and ask to be transferred. Sometimes works like a charm π

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com
