How long does it take to get child support taken from California EDD unemployment benefits?
So I've been on unemployment for about six weeks now and I just got a notice from California EDD saying they're going to start deducting child support from my weekly benefits. I wasn't totally surprised because I knew this was coming eventually but now I'm trying to figure out the actual timeline and logistics here. My weekly benefit amount is $478 and I have no idea how much they're going to take or when the first deduction actually shows off on my payment. The notice I got was kind of vague and just said 'income withholding order has been received' but didn't give me any specific dates or amounts. Has anyone gone through this process before? Like how long after California EDD receives the withholding order does it actually take before they start deducting it? And does it affect when my payments actually hit my Bank of America debit card? I'm trying to plan my budget but it's impossible when I don't know what's left after child support gets pulled. Already tried calling EDD twice this week and got disconnected both times before I could even explain my situation to a real person.

I went through exactly this about a year ago. Once California EDD receives the income withholding order from the child support agency, they're legally required to begin withholding within a specific timeframe — typically you'll see the deduction start within 2 to 4 weeks of EDD acknowledging receipt of the order. The amount they can withhold is capped under federal Consumer Credit Protection Act rules, so they can't take more than 50-65% of your disposable earnings depending on your arrears situation. Your net weekly benefit after child support gets sent directly to the State Disbursement Unit (SDU), which then routes it to the other parent. The payment to you gets processed first then the child support portion gets forwarded separately, so your EDD deposit may look smaller but it should still arrive on your normal payment schedule.

AuthorOk that 2-4 week window is really helpful, thank you. Do you know if that clock starts when EDD receives the order or when they acknowledge it? Because mine says received but I don't know if acknowledgment is a separate step.

Also worth knowing — the SDU transfer doesn't delay YOUR payment. You should still get your reduced amount on the same schedule as always.

this is accurate info. the withholding caps exist specifically so claimants don't get left with literally zero. seen people panic thinking they'd lose everything but federal law protects a portion for you

ugh the EDD phone situation is a NIGHTMARE. I spent three days straight trying to reach someone about my own withholding order last spring and got hung up on I think 7 or 8 times. Eventually I found this service called Claimyr that basically holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you back when an actual agent is on the line. Saved me so much stress. You can check it out at claimyr.com and they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 — seriously wish I'd known about it sooner because I wasted probably 12+ hours trying to get through on my own. Especially useful for something like child support withholding where you need to confirm exact amounts and timing with a real EDD rep.

Victoria Brown
AuthorWait this actually works? I'm so skeptical of anything that claims to get you through to EDD faster because I've heard so many horror stories lol

JaylinCharles
I was totally skeptical too honestly. But yeah it worked for me. Got a call back from an actual EDD agent within a few hours. Just make sure you have your claim ID and the withholding order number ready when they call you back.

I've seen Claimyr mentioned a few times on here. seems legit based on what people say. the EDD phone system is genuinely broken so any help is welcome at this point

ok so i went thru this last year and want to add something nobody mentions — make sure the income withholding order EDD received actually has the RIGHT amount on it. mine had an error from the child support caseworker and EDD just processed whatever number was on the form. took me two months to get it corrected and I was short on rent both months. so call your county child support agency AND EDD to verify the withholding amount before it starts hitting your payments
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorOh man that's a really good point. How do you even verify it though? Do I contact DCSS directly?
0 coins
Lucas Schmidt
yeah DCSS — Department of Child Support Services. call your county office and ask them to confirm what amount they submitted to EDD. then when you finally get through to EDD you can double check it matches. pain in the butt but worth it

seconding this. had the exact same problem. the two agencies don't always communicate cleanly and the claimant ends up in the middle dealing with both sides

The way child support withholding from unemployment works in California is a bit different from wage garnishment so I want to clarify some things. When DCSS submits an income withholding order to EDD, EDD processes it as a mandatory deduction from your gross weekly benefit amount. This isn't something you can contest with EDD directly — if you believe the order amount is wrong, that dispute has to happen through the family court or DCSS, not through EDD. EDD is just the conduit. They'll deduct what the order says and send it to SDU. Your UI Online account should eventually reflect the withholding in your payment history but it might take a full payment cycle before it shows up clearly.

Victoria Brown
AuthorSo basically EDD can't help me if I think the amount is wrong — I have to go through the court? That feels like it's going to take forever.
0 coins
Camila Castillo
Essentially yes. EDD's hands are tied — they're legally obligated to comply with the withholding order as written. Your remedy is either a modification through family court or a correction through DCSS if it was a clerical error. Courts are slow but DCSS corrections for clerical errors can sometimes happen in a few weeks.
0 coins
LongPeri
this is right. EDD isn't going to referee a dispute about your support order. they literally just deduct and forward. your issue if any is with the court order itself
0 coins
Oscar O'Neil
how much do they usually take tho?? like is there a standard percentage or does it vary by case
0 coins
Samuel Robinson
it varies by your specific court order honestly. but federal law caps total garnishments at 50% of disposable income if you're supporting another family, 60% if you're not, and those go up 5% each if you're in arrears more than 12 weeks. so worst case with arrears you're looking at 65% being withheld
0 coins
Oscar O'Neil
dang ok so potentially more than half. that's rough especially on unemployment wages already
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorYeah mine is a set dollar amount per week in the order so it's not percentage-based for me. But I still don't know exactly when the first deduction hits which is why I want to reach EDD

just wanna say I feel you OP. being on unemployment is stressful enough and then having child support deductions on top of it is a whole other layer. I was in this exact spot like 18 months ago and the uncertainty of not knowing what your actual take-home would be week to week was genuinely anxiety-inducing. it does stabilize once the deductions start and you know what to expect but those first few weeks of limbo are rough
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorYeah the limbo is really the worst part honestly. I can work with a smaller number, I just need to KNOW what the number is so I can budget.

Sara Hellquiem
totally. once mine started I actually felt better because at least it was predictable. the not knowing was way worse psychologically

A few things I'd recommend doing right now while you wait for the deduction to kick in: 1) Log into UI Online and check your payment history section — sometimes the withholding shows as a 'deduction' line before it actually hits. 2) Download or screenshot your current benefit year info so you have a baseline. 3) Call DCSS to confirm what they submitted. 4) If you need to actually reach EDD to confirm receipt and timing, Claimyr at claimyr.com is legitimately worth trying — there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains the whole process. Getting disconnected from EDD over and over is not going to get you answers, and for something involving child support withholding you really do need to talk to a live agent.
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorThis is a really organized breakdown, thank you. I didn't even know UI Online showed deduction line items. Going to check that right now.
0 coins
Brianna Muhammad
Yeah it doesn't always populate immediately but once EDD starts processing the order it should appear. Also check your correspondence inbox in UI Online — EDD sometimes sends a notice there too that's more detailed than what they mail.

Eloise Kendrick
The UI Online correspondence tip is gold. I found answers in there I never got over the phone

Wait I'm confused — does this affect your weekly certification at all? Like do you still certify the same way and EDD just takes the child support out before depositing? Or does it change anything about how you file?
0 coins
Samuel Robinson
Nothing changes about how you certify. You still file your weekly claim the exact same way. The withholding happens on EDD's backend after you certify and before the deposit goes out. Your certifications, job search requirements, all of that stays exactly the same.
0 coins
Charlee Coleman
Oh ok that makes sense. I was worried it would mess up my claim somehow
0 coins
Camila Castillo
Correct. Child support withholding is completely invisible to the certification process. It's a payment processing step that happens after eligibility is determined.

Liv Park
EDD doesn't even TELL you clearly what's happening half the time. I got a withholding order processed and found out because my deposit was smaller than usual. No notification in UI Online, no call, nothing. Had to figure it out myself and then spent two days trying to get through to EDD to understand what happened. The whole system is designed to confuse people honestly
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorUgh this is exactly what I'm afraid of. Just waking up one day and my payment is mysteriously smaller with no explanation.
0 coins
Liv Park
That's literally what happened to me. I thought there was a payment error at first. Super stressful.

Lucas Schmidt
This is why I said earlier to proactively call both DCSS and EDD BEFORE it starts. Don't wait for a surprise deposit. Get ahead of it.
0 coins
JaylinCharles
And this is exactly why having a way to actually reach EDD matters. If you can't get through and something unexpected happens with your payment you're just stuck guessing what happened.

does child support come out before or after taxes on unemployment? like does the child support withholding affect the taxable amount you report
0 coins
Camila Castillo
Child support is NOT tax deductible and doesn't reduce your taxable unemployment income. Your full gross weekly benefit amount is what gets reported to IRS as income. The child support comes out separately and doesn't affect your tax liability. So you'll owe taxes on the full benefit even if you only received a portion of it after withholding.
0 coins
Leeann Blackstein
oh wow I did not know that. so you're taxed on money you never actually received? that seems wrong
0 coins
Samuel Robinson
Unfortunately yes that's how it works. Child support withholding is treated differently from tax withholding. You're taxed on gross UI income regardless of child support deductions. It's a frustrating quirk of the system.
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorThis is actually really important info I hadn't even thought about. So I need to make sure I'm setting aside enough for taxes based on my full benefit not just what I actually receive. Good to know now before I end up with a tax bill.

my situation was slightly different — I had an arrears-only withholding order so they were taking extra on top of regular current support. took almost 6 weeks before EDD started the deductions in my case, not the 2-4 weeks people usually say. I think it depends on how backlogged EDD is when they receive the order. so manage your expectations, it might take longer than the standard estimate
0 coins
Victoria Brown
Author6 weeks is longer than I expected. Was there any way to check where in the processing queue the order was?
0 coins
LongPeri
not really. EDD doesn't give you a tracking number or anything for withholding order processing. it just kind of happens when it happens. best you can do is call and ask an agent to look it up.

this matches what i heard from someone else too. 'official' timeline and real timeline aren't always the same with EDD

Ryder Greene
Adding something that might help — when I talked to an EDD agent about my withholding order they were actually pretty helpful once I got through. They could tell me the exact date EDD received the order, when it was entered into the system, and estimated when it would first appear in my payments. So there IS good info available if you can reach someone. The problem is just getting through, which honestly is the hardest part of any EDD interaction.
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorOk so the agents actually DO have access to this info, they're not just going to give me vague non-answers? That's reassuring.
0 coins
Ryder Greene
The one I spoke to was genuinely knowledgeable about it. Had exact dates. It's not like calling about adjudication where sometimes they can't tell you much — withholding orders are pretty straightforward for them to look up.
0 coins
Brianna Muhammad
Yeah EDD agents can see the full timeline of a withholding order in their system. Getting through to one is the battle, but once you do the info is usually there.

Eloise Kendrick
lol at people saying 'just call EDD' like that's easy. tried calling 22 times in one day once. 22!! got through zero times. EDD phone system is a cruel joke
0 coins
JaylinCharles
22 calls is honestly not even unusual on this forum. I've seen people say they tried 40+ times. The regular call-in approach just doesn't work reliably anymore. It's why services like Claimyr exist — claimyr.com — the whole point is solving exactly this problem.

I finally tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and yeah it's legit. Actually got a callback from a real agent. Game changer compared to redialing over and over

Question for anyone who knows — if I'm on standby status with EDD does child support withholding work the same way? Like I'm in a slightly different situation where my employer put me on temporary layoff and I'm on standby so I don't have to do active job search, but wondering if the withholding process is different
0 coins
Samuel Robinson
Withholding works exactly the same regardless of whether you're on regular UI, standby, or any other non-PUA benefit type. As long as EDD is paying out weekly benefits, they'll honor the income withholding order. Your standby status doesn't affect the child support deduction process at all.
0 coins
Freya Collins
Ok good to know. I wasn't sure if standby somehow changed things. Appreciate the clarification.

this whole thread is making me realize I need to get ahead of this for myself. I have a potential withholding order coming and didn't really understand the timeline or process at all. OP you're doing the right thing by asking questions before it hits instead of being surprised

Victoria Brown
AuthorYeah honestly I started asking because getting blindsided financially on unemployment would be really bad timing. The more info I have the better I can plan.

exactly. the worst is when you think you know what your deposit will be and then it's different. at least if you know in advance you can budget accordingly

I work in HR and handle payroll garnishments for employees but unemployment withholding for our laid off workers goes through EDD so I've seen this from the employer side a bit. The process is pretty bureaucratic — DCSS sends the IWO to EDD, EDD enters it into their system, and there's a processing queue. The 2-4 week estimate is roughly right for normal conditions but EDD's processing speeds vary. For getting concrete answers on YOUR specific order, there really is no substitute for talking to an EDD agent directly.
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorInteresting perspective from the HR side. Does the IWO ever come through EDD to you as the employer when someone returns to work, or does that process start fresh?
0 coins
Theodore Nelson
When they return to work, yes DCSS would issue a new IWO to us as employer. It doesn't automatically transfer from EDD to employer — it's a fresh issuance. Good thing to be aware of so there's no gap in compliance.
0 coins
Camila Castillo
This is correct. The IWO is entity-specific. EDD gets their own, employer gets their own. Two separate orders essentially.

just want to throw in — make sure you're still doing your weekly certifications on time even while all this child support stuff is being sorted out. I know it sounds obvious but people get so stressed about the garnishment situation that they forget to certify and then their benefits stop entirely which is way worse. EDD will not extend your payment just because you were dealing with a withholding order issue
0 coins
Victoria Brown
AuthorHa, fair point. I am certifying, I'm just anxious about the financial side. But good reminder that stress doesn't excuse missing a certification deadline.
0 coins
AaliyahAli
Yeah the system has zero sympathy for why you missed a certification. Just don't miss it, period.

Sara Hellquiem
Can confirm this. Missed one certification because I was dealing with a completely different EDD issue and it triggered a whole new review process. Nightmare. Never again.

does anyone know if you can voluntarily increase the amount being withheld for child support through EDD?? like if I wanted to pay more than the order says to pay down arrears faster
0 coins
Camila Castillo
EDD can only withhold what's specified in the income withholding order — they have no mechanism to accept voluntary additional amounts. If you want to pay down arrears faster you'd need to either make payments directly to SDU separately from your EDD withholding, or go through DCSS to modify your order. EDD doesn't do voluntary extra withholding.
0 coins
Oscar O'Neil
ok makes sense, that's what I figured but wanted to confirm. so basically separate payment to SDU is the way if I want to pay extra
0 coins
Lucas Schmidt
yep SDU takes direct payments. just make sure to get a confirmation number every time so there's a paper trail

Update from OP: I actually got through to EDD this morning using Claimyr (saw it mentioned upthread and figured why not). The agent was able to pull up my specific withholding order and told me EDD received it 11 days ago and it's scheduled to start appearing in my payments within the next 1-2 payment cycles. She also confirmed the exact weekly amount so now I finally know what my budget looks like. Huge relief honestly. For anyone in a similar situation I'd say trying to get an actual EDD agent on the phone is absolutely worth it — the info they have is way more specific than anything you'd find online. And yeah, claimyr.com was legitimately how I got through after two failed days of calling on my own.
