Getting backpay for 3 weeks between EDD claim effective date and issue date?
So confused about my backpay situation! I just got approved for unemployment (finally) and I have a quick question. My claim effective date shows as July 10th, 2025, but my issue date isn't until July 30th. That's almost 3 weeks difference! Am I supposed to get paid for those weeks in between? I was definitely unemployed during that time but wasn't sure if I'm supposed to certify for them or if the system automatically gives me backpay. Does anyone know how this works? I've tried calling EDD but you know how that goes...impossible to reach anyone. I really need those 3 weeks of benefits if I'm entitled to them!

•No I haven't certified for those weeks yet! I didn't see them available in UI Online. Do I need to call and ask them to make those weeks available for certification?

Okay, so here's how it works with EDD backpay. The claim effective date (7/10 in your case) is when your benefit year begins. The issue date (7/30) is when your claim was actually processed and entered into the system. Yes, you should receive payments for all eligible weeks from your effective date forward, BUT you must certify for those weeks. Sometimes the system doesn't automatically give you those earlier weeks to certify for. You'll need to contact EDD to request certification for those missing weeks. I went through this exact situation last year - my claim took 5 weeks to process, and I had to specifically ask them to allow me to certify for those past weeks. Once I did that, I received all my backpay.

EDD's system is SUCH A JOKE with this stuff!! My claim last year had a 6 WEEK gap between effective date and when they finally "issued" it! Then they made it almost IMPOSSIBLE to get those weeks added for certification. The rep I finally reached acted like she was doing me a HUGE FAVOR by allowing me to certify for weeks I WAS LEGALLY ENTITLED TO!!! Unbelievable how they treat people who are already struggling.

•That's awful! Did you eventually get all your backpay though? I'm dealing with a similar situation right now and feeling pretty hopeless...

•@user5 Yes I eventually got it all but only after calling literally 37 times over 3 days. It's absolutely ridiculous that they put the burden on US to fix THEIR system issues!

I've been through this scenario a few times now (unfortunately). Here's exactly what you need to do: 1. You need to contact EDD to request certification for those "missing weeks" between 7/10 and 7/30 2. Once you reach a representative, specifically ask them to "add certification weeks" to your claim 3. They should add those weeks to your UI Online account within 24-48 hours 4. You'll then need to certify for those weeks just like you normally would 5. Payment typically comes 2-3 days after certifying for backpay weeks The tricky part is actually reaching someone at EDD. If you're having trouble getting through, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you bypass the phone queue. I was skeptical at first, but it actually worked - they got me connected to an EDD rep in about 25 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Good luck! Make sure you get those weeks you're entitled to.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I didn't know I had to specifically request those weeks to be added for certification. I'll try reaching out to EDD tomorrow. And thanks for the tip about Claimyr - if I can't get through the normal way I might give that a try. I really appreciate the help!

my friend had this happen and they told him he could only get like 1 week of backpay because he didn't certify on time for the other weeks. i think theres some rule about how long u have to certify or something. might wanna ask about that when u call

•That's not quite right. There is a 14-day window to certify on time, but in cases where weeks aren't made available to certify (like when there's a gap between effective date and issue date), EDD should allow certification for those weeks without penalty. Your friend may have had a different situation or the representative might have misunderstood the circumstances.

I'm confused about something related to this. So if I'm understanding right, the effective date is when you're FIRST eligible, but the issue date is when they finally APPROVE your claim? But what if you were denied initially and then appealed? Does the effective date stay the same? Sorry to piggyback on your question but I'm struggling with my claim too.

•Yes, your understanding is correct. The effective date typically remains the same even if you were initially denied and then approved through appeal. The effective date is usually based on when you first filed your claim or when your employment ended. If you win an appeal, you should be eligible for benefits retroactive to your effective date, assuming you meet all eligibility requirements for those weeks.

Update: I called EDD this morning and spoke to a rep who confirmed I AM eligible for those 3 weeks between my effective date and issue date! She's adding the weeks to my UI Online account so I can certify for them. Thanks everyone for your help - I would have had no idea I needed to specifically request this if I hadn't posted here. Should see the backpay in about a week once I certify!

•Yes! I got it about 3 days after certifying for those weeks. The money came through on my EDD Money Network card just like regular payments. Definitely worth calling about!

This is really helpful info! I'm dealing with a similar gap between my effective date and issue date (about 2 weeks). Reading through this thread, it sounds like the key is to specifically ask EDD to add those weeks for certification - they don't automatically show up in UI Online. Thanks for sharing your experience and the step-by-step process. It's frustrating that we have to chase down benefits we're legally entitled to, but at least now I know what to ask for when I call. Going to try calling tomorrow morning!

•Good luck with your call! One tip - try calling right when they open at 8am, that seems to be when you have the best chance of getting through quickly. Also make sure to have your claim details ready (effective date, issue date, etc.) so you can clearly explain the situation to the rep. It really shouldn't be this complicated but at least once you know the process it's pretty straightforward!

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else dealing with this - I had a 4 week gap between my effective date and issue date last year. The key thing I learned is that you absolutely have to be proactive about requesting those weeks. EDD won't automatically add them to your certification queue. When I finally got through to a rep, she told me it's a common issue but they can't just automatically assume you want to certify for those weeks (which seems ridiculous to me - of course we want our benefits!). She added all 4 weeks within about 10 minutes once I explained the situation. The whole call took maybe 15 minutes total. Don't give up if you're dealing with this - you ARE entitled to those benefits from your effective date forward!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's so frustrating that EDD makes us jump through these hoops for money we're already entitled to. I'm a newcomer here and dealing with a similar situation - 3 week gap between my effective and issue dates. Reading through everyone's experiences has been super helpful. It sounds like the consensus is clear: call EDD, specifically request they add those weeks for certification, and don't take no for an answer. I was worried I might have missed some deadline or something, but it seems like as long as you were eligible during those weeks, they should allow you to certify. Going to try calling first thing Monday morning!

New to this community and going through the exact same situation right now! My effective date was January 15th but my claim didn't get issued until February 5th - that's 3 weeks I'm missing. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful. It's crazy that EDD doesn't automatically make those weeks available for certification, especially since we're clearly entitled to benefits from the effective date. I was starting to panic thinking I'd somehow missed a deadline or messed something up. Going to call EDD tomorrow and specifically ask them to add those weeks like everyone suggested. Thanks for posting this question and to everyone who shared their experiences - this community is a lifesaver when dealing with EDD's confusing system!

•Welcome to the community! I'm new here too and just went through this exact same situation a few weeks ago. That 3-week gap you're dealing with is so frustrating, but the good news is everyone here is right - you should definitely be able to get those weeks added for certification. When I called EDD, I made sure to have my exact effective date and issue date ready, plus I explained that I was unemployed and eligible during that entire period. The rep was actually pretty helpful once I got through. One thing I learned from this thread is to be persistent - don't let them tell you those weeks aren't available. You're legally entitled to benefits from your effective date forward! Hope your call goes smoothly tomorrow. This community has been amazing for navigating EDD's maze of bureaucracy.

Just joined this community and wow, this thread is exactly what I needed! I'm in the same boat - my effective date is February 1st but my claim wasn't issued until February 22nd. That's 3 weeks of benefits I'm missing! I had no idea I needed to specifically call and request those weeks be added for certification. I thought EDD would automatically backdate everything once my claim was approved. Reading everyone's experiences here has been so eye-opening. It's honestly ridiculous that they put the burden on us to chase down benefits we're clearly entitled to from our effective date. I'm definitely calling tomorrow morning right at 8am like someone suggested. Thank you all for sharing your stories and solutions - this community is invaluable for navigating EDD's broken system!

•Welcome to the community! I'm also new here and just dealt with this exact situation last month. Your timeline sounds almost identical to mine - I had about 3 weeks between my effective and issue dates too. Based on everything I've read in this thread and my own experience, you're absolutely right that you should get those weeks. When I called EDD, I specifically said "I need certification weeks added for the gap between my effective date and issue date" and the rep knew exactly what I was talking about. It seems like this happens so often that they have a standard process for it. The most important thing is getting through to someone - I tried calling at different times and 8am really did work best for me. Don't get discouraged if it takes a few tries! This community has been such a lifesaver for figuring out EDD's confusing processes.

New member here and just wanted to say thank you to everyone who shared their experiences! I'm dealing with this exact situation right now - 4 week gap between my effective date (January 8th) and issue date (February 5th). I was getting really worried that I'd somehow lost those weeks of benefits, but reading through this thread has given me so much hope and clear direction on what to do. It's absolutely mind-boggling that EDD doesn't automatically make those weeks available for certification when they're the ones who created the delay in the first place! Planning to call tomorrow morning at 8am sharp and specifically request they add those missing weeks for certification. This community is amazing - I never would have known to ask for this specifically without all of your shared experiences. Will update once I get through to them!

•Welcome to the community! Your situation sounds exactly like what I went through a few months ago. That 4-week gap is definitely frustrating, but you're absolutely on the right track. When you call tomorrow, make sure to emphasize that you were unemployed and actively seeking work during those weeks between January 8th and February 5th. I found it helpful to have my dates written down clearly before calling so I could explain the situation quickly to the rep. The 8am call time really does seem to work - I got through on my second try that way. Don't let them tell you those weeks aren't available or that there's some deadline you missed. You're entitled to those benefits from your effective date forward, period. Looking forward to hearing your update! This whole process shouldn't be this complicated but at least we're all here to help each other navigate it.

New to this community and currently dealing with this exact issue! My effective date is March 1st but my claim wasn't issued until March 25th - that's almost 4 weeks of missing benefits. I had been searching everywhere for answers and was starting to think I'd lost those weeks forever. This thread has been incredibly helpful in showing me that I need to specifically call EDD and request they add those weeks for certification. It's so frustrating that their system doesn't automatically handle this when they're the ones who caused the processing delay! I was completely unemployed and job searching during that entire gap period, so I should definitely be entitled to those benefits. Planning to call first thing tomorrow morning at 8am based on everyone's advice here. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - without this community I never would have known what to ask for. Will definitely update once I get through to them!

•Welcome to the community! I just joined recently too and went through this exact same situation a couple months ago. That 4-week gap you're dealing with is so stressful, but everyone here is absolutely right - you should be able to get all those weeks added for certification. When I called EDD about my similar gap, I made sure to be really specific about my dates and emphasized that I was unemployed and eligible during that entire period. The rep actually told me this happens more often than people realize because of processing delays on their end. One tip that helped me: have your claim number ready along with your exact effective and issue dates so you can explain everything clearly right away. The 8am calling strategy really does work - I got through on my third try that way. Don't give up if they initially say those weeks aren't available, just politely insist that you need to certify for all eligible weeks from your effective date forward. You've got this! Looking forward to your update tomorrow.

Just joined this community and I'm so grateful I found this thread! I'm currently dealing with the exact same situation - my effective date is February 12th but my claim wasn't issued until March 8th, which is almost 4 weeks of missing benefits. I was starting to panic thinking I'd somehow lost those weeks or missed some important deadline. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring and informative. It's absolutely ridiculous that EDD creates these processing delays and then puts the burden on us to figure out how to get the benefits we're legally entitled to! I had no idea I needed to specifically call and request those weeks be added for certification - I assumed they would automatically backdate everything once approved. Based on all the advice here, I'm planning to call tomorrow morning right at 8am with my exact dates ready and specifically ask them to add those missing weeks for certification. •Welcome to the community! I'm new here too and just went through this exact situation about a month ago. That 4-week gap you're describing is incredibly frustrating, but you're definitely on the right path after reading through this thread. When I called EDD about my similar gap (mine was 3 weeks between effective and issue dates), I made sure to be very clear that I was unemployed and actively job searching during that entire period. The rep I spoke with was actually pretty understanding once I explained the situation clearly. One thing that helped me was writing down my timeline beforehand - effective date, issue date, and exactly how many weeks I was missing - so I could present it clearly to the rep. The 8am calling strategy mentioned here really does work better than trying later in the day. Also, don't let them brush you off if they initially say those weeks aren't available - politely but firmly explain that you're entitled to benefits from your effective date forward regardless of their processing delays. You should definitely be able to get all those weeks added for certification. Good luck with your call tomorrow!

New community member here and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar situation - my effective date is January 20th but my claim wasn't processed until February 10th, so I have about 3 weeks of missing benefits. Reading through everyone's experiences has given me so much clarity on what I need to do. It's absolutely crazy that EDD doesn't automatically make those weeks available for certification when they're the ones who caused the processing delay! I was completely lost on how to handle this until I found this discussion. Planning to call tomorrow at 8am sharp with my dates ready and specifically request they add those weeks for certification. Thank you all for sharing your stories and providing such clear guidance - without this community I would have had no idea I needed to proactively ask for those weeks. Will definitely update once I get through to them!
