Getting EDD payment history as official paystubs - possible or hopeless?

I've been on unemployment for about 2 months and need to apply for an apartment. The rental office wants to see proof of income, and they specifically asked for 'paystubs' from my unemployment benefits. I can see my payment history in UI Online, but I don't see any way to download or generate actual paystub-type documents that show my biweekly payments. Does anyone know if EDD offers something like this? I tried calling but can't get through (shocker). The screenshot of my payment history page doesn't seem 'official' enough for this landlord. Help?

Theres no actual paystub but you can print your payment history from UI online and that shud work. Landlords ask for this all the time

Thanks but my landlord specifically said they need something that looks more 'official' than just the payment history screen. The property management company is being super strict about their documentation.

I went through this exact situation last year. What you need is an 'Award Letter' or 'Notice of Determination' from EDD, which shows your weekly benefit amount and total claim balance. This is considered official documentation. You can also request an official Payment History statement by calling EDD (though good luck getting through) or sending a secure message through your UI Online account requesting this document. Alternatively, print your payment history from UI Online, and ask your landlord if they would accept it with a cover letter explaining it's the official record from the EDD portal. Some property managers will accept this if you explain that EDD doesn't issue traditional paystubs.

Thank you! I didn't think about using my Award Letter - I still have that. Do you know how to send a secure message asking for an official Payment History? I couldn't find that option in UI Online.

when i rented my place i just showed them my bank statements that had the edd deposits. they accepted that + the award letter. most places just want proof the $ is real and regular.

The EDD system is RIDICULOUS about this stuff!!! I've been fighting with them for TWO YEARS trying to get proper documentation for my taxes and everything else. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to get actual documentation that other agencies accept! It's like they WANT us to fail at getting housing and other services. The whole system is designed to frustrate people!!! But anyway - what worked for me was getting a Payment Activity Report. You go to the Contact EDD section, send a message requesting an official Payment Activity Report for housing purposes. It took about 2 weeks to get it but it looks official enough that my apartment complex accepted it.

I agree the system is completely broken! But your suggestion about the Payment Activity Report is super helpful. I'm going to try that approach. Did you request it through UI Online or by mail?

If you need immediate help with this, I'd recommend using Claimyr to connect with an EDD representative directly. I was in a similar situation where I needed official documentation for my mortgage refinance, and couldn't get through on the regular EDD lines. Claimyr got me connected to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes, and the rep was able to generate and email me an official payment history document that satisfied my lender's requirements. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or just go to claimyr.com. It's way faster than waiting for them to respond to messages or struggling with the phones for days.

I've never heard of this service before. Did they really get you through to an actual person? I've been calling for days with no luck.

Yes, it actually works. They basically use some technology to navigate the EDD phone system and hold your place in line. When they get through, they connect you directly with the EDD rep. The rep I spoke with generated a payment verification letter while I was on the phone and emailed it to me immediately. Saved me a ton of time and stress.

I actually work in property management (not the leasing side tho) and we accept the EDD award letter plus the payment history printout all the time. Its standard procedure for us. Maybe just ask to speak to the property manager directly instead of whoever is processing your application? Sometimes the front desk people don't know all the acceptable documents.

That's a great suggestion! I've only been dealing with the leasing agent. I'll try to speak with the property manager directly. Thanks!

To follow up on my earlier comment - the official way to send a secure message requesting a Payment History document is: 1. Log in to UI Online 2. Select "Contact EDD" from the menu 3. Select "Questions about my claim or payments" 4. In the subject line, put "Request for Official Payment History Document" 5. In the message, clearly state you need an official document showing your payment history for housing application purposes They typically respond within 5-10 business days. Make sure to mention it's urgent if your application deadline is approaching. The document they send is on EDD letterhead and generally accepted by landlords and lenders.

Thank you for these detailed instructions! I just sent the message exactly as you outlined. Fingers crossed they respond quickly.

Has anyone tried using the EDD Benefit Audit (DE 4581) form? I had to get one for my mortgage last year and it was accepted. You can request it by calling EDD. It shows all your benefit payments on official letterhead. Only problem is actually reaching someone at EDD...

my friend just went thru this. he printed everything from UI Online then went to a notary and had it all notarized. the apartment complex accepted that. cost like $15 for notary.

That's actually brilliant! I never thought of getting the printouts notarized. That might work if the other options fail. Thanks!

Just wanted to add - make sure you're also showing them your Notice of Award letter which shows your weekly benefit amount (WBA) and total claim balance. This is an official document with an EDD letterhead that you should have received when your claim was approved. Combined with your payment history (and bank statements showing the deposits), this should satisfy most landlords. If they're still being difficult, you can also request a Statement of Benefits from EDD, which is an official summary of all benefits paid during a specific period. This is commonly used for tax purposes but works for housing applications too.

I actually just went through this exact same situation last month! What ended up working for me was combining multiple documents. I used my original Award Letter (the one that shows your weekly benefit amount), printed my payment history from UI Online, and included my bank statements showing the EDD deposits. I also wrote a brief cover letter explaining that EDD doesn't issue traditional paystubs but that these documents show the same information. The key was presenting it as a complete package rather than just one document. Most property managers understand that unemployment benefits work differently than regular employment. If your current property management company won't accept this combination, you might want to ask if they have a specific form or affidavit they'd accept instead. Sometimes they just need you to sign something confirming your income source. Also, if you're still having trouble, try asking them what other unemployment recipients have provided in the past - they've definitely dealt with this before and might have a standard process they just haven't mentioned yet.

This is such a comprehensive approach! I really like the idea of putting together a complete package with a cover letter explaining the situation. That makes it look more professional and shows you're taking their requirements seriously. I'm definitely going to try this combination method - Award Letter + payment history + bank statements + explanatory cover letter. Did you have any issues with them questioning the legitimacy of the printed payment history from UI Online, or did the cover letter address their concerns?

I'm dealing with this same issue right now! My landlord is also being super picky about documentation. One thing I discovered is that you can actually generate a more official-looking document by going to the "History" section in UI Online and using the "View and Print Claim Summary" option - it gives you a cleaner format than just the payment history screen. Also, I called my local EDD office directly (not the main number) and surprisingly got through after only 20 minutes on hold. The rep told me they can mail you an official "Benefit Payment History" document that's on letterhead, but it takes 2-3 weeks. If you need something faster, she suggested combining the printed payment history with your original determination letter and bank statements showing the deposits. Has anyone tried contacting their local assembly member's office? I heard they sometimes help with EDD documentation issues when you need it for housing.

That's really helpful about the "View and Print Claim Summary" option! I didn't know that existed and it sounds like it would look more official than just a screenshot. Getting through to a local EDD office is amazing - I've been trying the main number forever with no luck. Do you mind sharing which local office you called? And yes, I've heard about assembly members helping with EDD issues but wasn't sure if they'd help with something like this. Might be worth a try if the documentation package doesn't work!

I had this exact same problem when I was apartment hunting last year! What finally worked for me was getting a "Monetary Determination" letter from EDD - it's different from the Award Letter and shows your benefit calculation in a more official format. You can request it through the Contact EDD messaging system. But honestly, the fastest solution was what someone mentioned about speaking directly to the property manager. I escalated past the leasing agent and explained that EDD doesn't issue paystubs like traditional employers. The manager understood immediately and accepted my Award Letter + printed payment history + bank statements. One more tip - if you have a local legal aid office, they sometimes have template letters you can use to explain unemployment documentation to landlords. It adds credibility when it comes from a legal organization. Good luck with your application!

This is really helpful! I didn't know there was a difference between the Award Letter and the Monetary Determination letter - that could be exactly what I need since my landlord keeps saying the regular Award Letter "doesn't look official enough." I'm definitely going to request the Monetary Determination through the messaging system and also try escalating to the property manager like you suggested. The legal aid template letter is a great idea too - having something from a legal organization backing up the explanation would probably make them take it more seriously. Thanks for all these options!

I went through this nightmare last year and it was so frustrating! What ended up working for me was a combination approach. I printed my payment history from UI Online (make sure to use the "View and Print Claim Summary" option like someone mentioned - it looks way more official), got it notarized at a UPS store for $10, and included a letter from my case worker confirming my benefit amount. The trick was also timing - I applied for apartments right after my certification week so I could show the most recent payments. Some property managers are just more understanding than others about unemployment documentation. If this place doesn't work out, keep trying other rentals because not all landlords are this strict about the format. Also, pro tip: if you have any friends or family who work in real estate, ask them to review your documentation package before you submit it. They usually know what landlords actually care about vs what they say they want. Good luck!

This is such great advice! I never thought about timing it with certification week to show the most recent payments - that's really smart. The notarization idea keeps coming up and I think that might be the key to making the printed documents look more official. I'm also going to ask around to see if anyone I know works in real estate who could review my package. It's frustrating how much this varies by property manager, but you're right that I should keep trying other places if this one doesn't work out. Thanks for the encouragement and practical tips!

I just went through this same situation a few weeks ago! What worked for me was requesting an "Employment Development Department Benefit Year Summary" through the UI Online messaging system. It's different from the regular payment history and comes on official EDD letterhead with all your payment details in a more formal format. To get it: Log into UI Online → Contact EDD → Select "Unemployment Insurance Benefits" → Subject: "Request for Official Benefit Year Summary for Housing Application" → Explain you need official documentation for rental application. It took about 7 business days to receive it by mail, and my property management company accepted it immediately. The document looks very official and includes your claim details, weekly benefit amount, and complete payment history with dates and amounts. In the meantime, definitely try the combination approach others mentioned (Award Letter + printed payment history + bank statements) with a professional cover letter. But if they're being really strict about "official" documentation, the Benefit Year Summary is your best bet. Worth the wait if you can swing it timing-wise!

This is incredibly helpful! I've been struggling with the same issue and the "Employment Development Department Benefit Year Summary" sounds like exactly what I need. The fact that it comes on official letterhead makes all the difference. I'm going to send that exact message through UI Online today. Seven business days is totally manageable for my timeline. Thank you so much for the specific wording to use in the request - that takes all the guesswork out of it. I really appreciate you sharing what actually worked!

I'm dealing with this exact same frustration right now! Reading through all these responses is so helpful. It sounds like there are actually several different official documents EDD can provide - the Award Letter, Monetary Determination, Payment Activity Report, Benefit Year Summary, and DE 4581 form. For anyone else going through this, it seems like the key strategies are: 1. Request the official "Benefit Year Summary" through UI Online messaging (as Aisha Rahman described) 2. Use the combination approach: Award Letter + printed payment history + bank statements + cover letter 3. Get documents notarized if needed to add legitimacy 4. Escalate to the property manager instead of dealing with leasing agents 5. Try calling local EDD offices instead of the main number The fact that so many people have dealt with this shows how common the problem is, but also that there ARE solutions. I'm going to try requesting the Benefit Year Summary first since it sounds the most official, and if my timeline is too tight, I'll go with the combination package approach. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!
