EDD stuck on 'pending' after first certification - will I get both payments at once?

Frustrated with this pending status! I certified for unemployment for the very first time 12 days ago, and both weeks are still stuck on pending. No money deposited to my Money Network card yet. I check UI Online like 10 times a day and nothing changes. Does EDD usually take this long to process first-time payments? Will they eventually deposit both weeks together, or do they come separately? My rent is due next week and I'm seriously stressing out. This is in California btw. My claim shows as 'active' but payments just say 'pending' with no explanation. I haven't received any messages in my UI Online inbox either.

First-time payments often have a delay while EDD verifies your identity and eligibility. This is completely normal, though stressful! Most likely, both weeks will be paid together once your claim fully processes. If you certified correctly and there are no issues with your claim, you should see movement within 2-3 weeks from your initial certification. Check if you've received any notices about an ID verification or eligibility interview requirement - these would be in your UI Online inbox or possibly mailed to you. If you haven't received anything, your claim is probably just working through the system.

Thank you!! That makes me feel a bit better. I haven't received anything about ID verification (already did ID.me when I applied) or interviews. Should I be doing anything while I wait, or just keep certifying on time?

mine took 3 weeks to finally switch from pending to paid!!! the system is GARBAGE and nobody tells you anything. just keep certifying every two weeks even if the previous ones are still pending. EDD is probably the most inefficient govt agency in existence 🙄

3 weeks?! That's ridiculous! Did they at least explain why it took so long? My claim doesn't show any issues that need resolving.

same boat! waiting on my 1st payment too. its been 2 wks

good luck! hope yours gets processed faster than mine did

The first payment often takes longer because your claim goes through additional verification processes. Your best bet is to call EDD directly to check if there are any issues that might not be visible in your online account. Sometimes there are small details that need addressing before payments can be released. And yes, typically when they process your first payment, both weeks will pay out together if you've already certified for them. Keep certifying for any new weeks even while waiting. I've been through this whole process twice in the past few years, and calling is really the only way to get clear answers about pending payments. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I've tried calling EDD about 20 times in the past week and can never get through. It's either busy signals or the automated message saying they're getting too many calls and to try again later.

Have you checked if there's any "pending eligibility" issue on your account? Sometimes EDD requires an interview before releasing first payments, especially if there's anything unusual about your work separation. I had a similar situation where my payments were pending for almost 3 weeks because they needed to verify that I was laid off rather than quitting. If you can't see any issues in your UI Online account, you really need to speak with an EDD rep to find out what's causing the delay. Unfortunately getting through to them is incredibly difficult these days.

I don't see anything about pending eligibility in my UI Online account. Just says Active for the claim status and Pending for the payment status. I was laid off due to company downsizing, so it should be pretty straightforward.

my 1st payment took 4 weeks then everything was normal after that its just how the edd works lol

4 weeks?! That's insane. Did you have to do anything special or it just suddenly went through?

just waited. then one day i checked and it said paid instead of pending. no explanation

I went through this exact same thing last month! After struggling to get through to EDD for two weeks straight, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me actually reach a representative. I was super skeptical at first, but their system actually worked and connected me to an EDD agent who fixed my pending payments issue in about 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Website is claimyr.com - honestly saved me so much frustration after days of redialing EDD with no luck. The agent told me my claim had a simple verification flag that wouldn't have resolved on its own.

Thank you! I'll check this out because I'm going crazy trying to get through on the phone. Did they tell you specifically what was causing your payments to be stuck in pending?

Yeah, turns out there was a wage verification issue that needed to be manually cleared by a rep. It wasn't showing up anywhere in my UI Online account, which was the frustrating part. The rep cleared it in minutes once I finally got through.

does anyone know if id get disqualified if i report part time income? went back to work but only 15 hrs/week

0 coins

You won't get disqualified for part-time work, but your weekly benefit amount will be reduced based on what you earn. Always report all income accurately when you certify. If you earn too much in a week (usually over your weekly benefit amount), you might not receive benefits for that specific week, but your claim stays active.

To directly address your question - yes, when your pending payments finally process, both weeks will typically be paid together. The Money Network card will receive the full amount for both weeks at once. One thing to check: did you answer any certification questions in a way that might trigger a review? For example, saying you weren't available for work, didn't look for work, or turned down work can cause delays. Also, make sure you completed your work search requirements for each week. If it's been more than 3 weeks since you certified, I definitely recommend speaking with an EDD representative to check if there's a specific issue with your claim.

Thank you! I double checked my certifications and I answered everything correctly - said I was available, looking for work, and listed my job search activities. I'm going to try to get through to EDD tomorrow morning. Really hope this gets resolved soon.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Turns out there was an employer verification issue that needed to be cleared manually. The representative fixed it while I was on the phone, and she said both weeks should change from pending to paid within 24-48 hours. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

That's great news! Glad you got it resolved. This is very common with first-time claims - there's often something small that needs verification before payments can begin. Once your first payment processes, future certifications should go much more smoothly.

Awesome! Did you use Claimyr to get through or just keep calling? Either way, glad it's getting fixed!

I used Claimyr this morning and got connected to a rep in about 15 minutes. Totally worth it after wasting days trying to call on my own. Thanks for the recommendation!
