EDD payment schedule confusion - if paid Tuesday when's my next deposit?

OK so I'm super confused about the EDD payment schedule... I just got my first unemployment payment deposited on Tuesday this week (yay finally!) but now I'm wondering when exactly to expect the next one? I certified Sunday for both weeks since it was my first time. I know we certify every 2 weeks, but does that mean my next payment is in 2 weeks from when I certified or 2 weeks from when I actually got paid? Also does everyone get paid on the same day or does it vary? If I certify on time do I always get paid on Tuesdays? Tried looking on the EDD website but couldn't find a clear answer about their payment schedule.

It's based on your certification date, not your payment date. You'll certify every two weeks on Sunday (the day your certification becomes available). If you certify early Sunday morning, the payment typically processes within 24-48 hours and deposits 1-2 days after that. So yes, if you certify this Sunday by like 8am, you'll probably get paid Tuesday or Wednesday. I've been using Claimyr (claimyr.com) whenever I have payment issues or questions - they help you get through to an EDD rep quickly instead of calling hundreds of times. Their video shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - saved me so much frustration when my payments were stuck pending.

Ohhhh that makes more sense! So I'll certify every other Sunday and then get paid a few days later. My next certification should be available in about 10 days then I guess? Also thanks for the Claimyr info - bookmarking that in case I run into issues!

my payments always hit on weds not tues but i certify sunday night not morning so thats probly why. i think each bank processes diff too

This is correct. The exact deposit day can vary based on your bank's processing time. If you're using the EDD Money Network debit card, it might be slightly faster than direct deposit to some banks. The important thing is establishing your regular certification schedule, which is always every two weeks from your initial certification date.

THEY NEVER TELL U THIS STUFF CLEARLY!!!! I swear EDD makes everything confusing on purpose. I went 3 weeks thinking I was supposed to certify every week and couldn't figure out why the system wouldn't let me. No one answers phones and the website is useless!!!

Your claim is on a specific schedule that doesn't change. EDD assigns everyone to either a Group 1 or Group 2 certification schedule. You'll always certify every two weeks on Sunday, and your certification weeks are fixed by your assigned group. The payment typically processes overnight if you certify early on Sunday, and depending on your payment method (Money Network card vs direct deposit) and your bank, it will deposit 1-3 business days later. To know exactly when your next certification is available, log into UI Online and look at your homepage - it will show your next certification date clearly at the top of the dashboard.

Adding to this - if you miss your certification window (which is two weeks), you can still certify late but it might delay your payment. The certification window opens at midnight on Sunday and you have about 14 days to complete it before it becomes "too late to certify" and requires you to contact EDD to reopen that period.

When I first started getting unemployment, I was SUPER confused too. My claim was approved on a Wednesday but I couldn't certify until the following Sunday. Then I got paid on Tuesday. Then I had to wait two whole weeks to certify again. So now my schedule is certify every other Sunday, get paid every other Tuesday or Wednesday depending on bank processing. Does that help?

Yes that helps a lot! So similar to my situation. It's just confusing at first trying to figure out all the timing. I'll mark my calendar for every other Sunday for certification day.

guys i have a somewhat related question - if my benefit year ends in July, do I still certify the same way until then? My work is seasonal so I might go back before that date anyway

Yes, you continue certifying on your regular schedule until either your benefit year ends or you exhaust your claim balance (whichever comes first). If you return to work, you simply report your earnings when certifying, and if you earn too much, you won't receive benefits for those weeks but your claim stays active until the benefit year ends. Remember to always report accurate earnings during certification.

Here's a simple way to remember the payment schedule: 1. Your certification date is always every other Sunday 2. Payment processing typically starts that Sunday night/Monday morning 3. Payment usually appears 1-3 business days after processing (so Tuesday-Thursday) The exact deposit day may vary by 1-2 days depending on your bank, but the certification schedule is fixed. You can also set up email or text alerts in your UI Online account to notify you when it's time to certify.

Thank you! I didn't know about the alerts - just set that up. This whole thread has been super helpful!

One thing that helped me when I was figuring out the EDD payment schedule was keeping a simple calendar or notes app where I tracked my certification dates and payment dates for the first few cycles. After about 3-4 payments, you'll have your personal pattern down and won't need to think about it anymore. Also, if you ever have a payment that's delayed or doesn't show up when expected, don't panic right away - sometimes banks have processing delays on their end, especially around holidays. Give it an extra business day or two before calling EDD. The system is actually pretty reliable once you understand how it works!

That's really smart advice about tracking it for the first few cycles! I'm definitely going to do that. I was already starting to stress about when exactly to expect things but you're right that it'll become routine pretty quickly. Good point about the bank delays too - I would probably panic if my payment was a day late and start calling EDD immediately. Thanks for the heads up that it's normal for there to be some variation!

Just want to add that if you're ever unsure about your specific certification schedule, you can also check your UI Online account dashboard - it shows your next certification date right at the top. I made the mistake early on of trying to certify on the wrong week and got confused when the system wouldn't let me. The bi-weekly schedule is pretty strict but once you get into the rhythm it becomes second nature. Also, I've found that certifying earlier in the day on Sunday (like before noon) tends to get processed faster than waiting until Sunday evening, though that might just be my experience. Good luck with your claim!

That's great advice about certifying earlier on Sunday! I hadn't thought about the timing within the day potentially affecting processing speed. I'll definitely try to get mine done first thing Sunday morning. And yes, the UI Online dashboard has been really helpful - I can see my next certification date is clearly marked there. It's reassuring to know that once you get into the routine it becomes automatic. Thanks for the tip about the system not letting you certify on the wrong week - good to know that's normal and not a glitch!

Just went through this same confusion when I started my claim a few months ago! The key thing to remember is that your certification schedule is locked in from your first certification - so if you certified on a Sunday, you'll always certify every other Sunday after that. The payment timing can vary slightly (I usually get mine on Tuesday or Wednesday), but the certification date never changes. One tip that really helped me: download the EDD mobile app if you haven't already. It sends you push notifications when it's time to certify, which is super convenient. Also, if you ever need to check your payment history or see exactly when your next certification is due, it's all right there in your UI Online account under "Claim History" and "Payment Activity." The first few cycles feel confusing but you'll have it figured out in no time!

Thanks for mentioning the EDD mobile app! I didn't even know there was one - just downloaded it and the push notifications will be super helpful. I was worried about missing a certification deadline since I'm still getting used to the schedule. It's really reassuring to hear from so many people that the confusion is totally normal at first. I feel much better about the whole process now after reading everyone's experiences. The claim history feature sounds useful too for tracking everything.

I totally get the confusion! When I first started my EDD claim, I spent way too much time trying to figure out the timing. Here's what I learned after a few months: your certification schedule is set in stone from day one - every other Sunday, no exceptions. The payment usually hits 2-3 business days after you certify, so if you certify Sunday morning, expect it Tuesday or Wednesday. One thing that really helped me was setting up direct deposit instead of using the debit card - it seemed to arrive a bit more consistently. Also, don't stress if your payment is a day or two off from what you expect, especially around holidays or weekends. The system is actually pretty reliable once you get into the groove. Pro tip: I keep a simple note in my phone with my certification dates for the next few months so I never have to wonder "is this my week?" You'll have it down pat after your third or fourth cycle!
