EDD open on Columbus Day? Just saved me a week of waiting!
Just had a mini heart attack thinking I'd have to wait until Tuesday to sort out my UI payment issues! Realized the EDD office is ACTUALLY OPEN today (Oct 12) despite being Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day. The payment specialist told me California state offices don't observe this holiday anymore. I was convinced all government offices would be closed! If anyone else was planning to wait until tomorrow to call or visit an office, don't wait - they're fully operational today. Could save you from delaying your claim by a whole week if you're in a time crunch like me!

Wait are you serious??!! I've been putting off calling them because I assumed they'd be closed for the holiday. My certification has been stuck on pending for 3 weeks and I need to talk to a tier 2 specialist. I already took the day off work to run errands thinking I couldn't call EDD today!!

•Yep, 100% serious! I just got off the phone with them about 40 minutes ago. The rep even mentioned they've had lower call volume today because people assumed they were closed. Might be a good day to get through!

Thanks for the heads-up. For future reference, EDD observes the following holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (and day after), and Christmas Day. Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day was removed from their holiday calendar in 2020 as part of state budget cuts. This is true for most California state agencies now.

•Wait they're open the day AFTER Thanksgiving but closed ON Thanksgiving? Is that right? That seems backward from most places.

This happened to me last year too. I waited an extra day to call about my identity verification issue because I thought they'd be closed. Ended up delaying my payment by a week. The EDD holiday schedule is different from federal holidays, and they've changed it a few times in recent years which adds to the confusion. If anyone is trying to reach EDD today (or any day), I highly recommend using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent without the endless redials. They basically hold your place in line and call you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•Is Claimyr really worth it? I've been calling EDD for DAYS trying to fix my disqualification issue. I keep getting disconnected after waiting 30+ minutes. I'm desperate at this point because my rent is due next week.

I had NO IDEA they weren't closed today!!! I've been stressing all weekend about my certification that's been stuck on pending since Sept 28th and was dreading having to wait until tomorrow to call them. THANK YOU for posting this!! Going to try calling them right now!

•Update: Got through after 45 minutes! The rep was able to push my payments through. Turns out there was a flag on my account because I reported some self-employment income and they needed to verify it. Would've been waiting another week if I hadn't seen this post!

This reminds me of when I thought they were closed for Presidents Day last year but they were actually open. I ended up missing my phone interview and had to reschedule which delayed my benefits for almost three weeks. The EDD calendar is SO confusing especially since it changes year to year sometimes. Why can't they just follow the regular federal holiday schedule like everyone else??

I just called and can confirm they ARE open today! Finally got my eligibility interview scheduled after weeks of waiting. The rep said they removed Columbus Day from their holiday calendar back in 2020 due to budget cuts. Apparently several California state holidays were eliminated that year. Good to know for the future!

•Yes, all EDD services including the America's Job Centers (AJCC) and in-person offices are open regular hours today. The only EDD services that observe Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day are those that operate under federal funding guidelines, which doesn't include standard UI services.
