EDD new claim filing without updated ID - wait or proceed?

So my current unemployment claim just expired and I see the option to file a new claim in my UI Online account. My situation is a bit tricky - I work an on-call position (basically partial employment), so I still qualify for benefits during weeks with little/no work. Problem is, my California ID just expired and I've applied for a new one, but it hasn't arrived yet. Should I go ahead and start the new claim process now without my updated ID, or wait until my new ID arrives in the mail? I'm worried about delaying benefits if I wait too long, but also don't want my claim to get stuck in verification limbo because of the ID issue. Has anyone been in this situation before? What would you recommend?

You should definitely wait until you have your new ID. EDD requires valid identification for the ID.me verification process, and starting a claim with an expired ID will just lead to delays and possible disqualification. I had to do this last year, and waiting until I had my new ID in hand made everything go much smoother.

Thanks for the advice. Do you remember approximately how long the verification took once you had your new ID? I'm trying to budget for this gap period.

OMG same!!! My license was expired by just 2 weeks and they made me verify EVERYTHING. Such a nightmare.

While it's technically possible to start the claim without your new ID, I strongly recommend waiting. Here's why: 1. The ID.me verification system EDD uses requires a valid, unexpired ID document 2. Starting with an expired ID will trigger identity verification issues 3. This often leads to weeks of delay while they manually review your claim 4. You might have to complete additional identity verification steps If your new ID is expected soon, the few days of waiting will likely be shorter than the weeks of delay from ID verification problems. However, if you're concerned about a gap in benefits, you can call EDD to ask about your specific situation.

That makes a lot of sense. My new ID should arrive within the next 7-10 days according to the DMV. I guess waiting that extra week is better than potentially waiting months for verification issues to resolve.

I had almost the exact same situation in January! My ID expired right when I needed to file a new claim. I tried using my expired ID with ID.me and it was rejected. Then I had to wait for my new ID anyway, and by then my claim was already flagged for verification issues. Took almost 7 weeks to get it all sorted out and get paid. DEFINITELY wait for your new ID to arrive.

I had a similar experience but with my passport instead of state ID. The verification system is super strict about expiration dates. Just wondering - did you eventually get backpay for those 7 weeks or did you lose that money?

The EDD system is SO FRUSTRATING!! Even with a valid ID the whole process takes forever. My friend had to wait 5 weeks just for basic verification last month even tho all her docs were current!!!

If you really need to get through to EDD to ask about this specific situation, try using Claimyr. I was stuck in a similar verification nightmare and couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks. Claimyr got me through to an actual EDD rep who fixed my issue in minutes. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - seriously saved me so much frustration.

Does that service actually work? I've been calling EDD for 3 days straight and can't get through.

It worked for me last month. Got through to an agent within about 25 minutes instead of calling for days. Was worth it to get my claim issues resolved.

Just to provide some extra information on this: When you file a new claim after expiration, EDD verifies your identity through ID.me, which requires unexpired government identification. Your claim will be put on hold pending identity verification if there are any issues with your ID. Additionally, when filing a new claim after expiration, they'll review your base period wages to determine your new benefit amount - so waiting a week or two usually won't impact your benefit amount calculation, since they're looking at earlier quarters of earnings. If you're still certifying for benefits on your previous claim until its final week, you won't have a gap in potential payments as long as you file your new claim within the established timeframe after expiration.

Thank you for explaining how the base period wages work. That helps me understand why waiting a bit won't hurt my benefit amount. My last claim ended 2 weeks ago, so I was getting anxious about the gap.

wait has anyone tried using digital ID in the wallet app for id.me? does that work or do u need the physical card?

Great question. Currently, ID.me does accept digital IDs from the Apple Wallet app for some states, but California's digital ID implementation is still in progress and not yet fully accepted by all verification systems. For EDD verification specifically, I recommend using the physical ID to avoid any potential issues.

Thanks everyone for the super helpful advice! I've decided to wait until my new ID arrives before filing my new claim. Seems like the consensus is that trying to proceed with an expired ID will cause more delays than just waiting. I'll keep an eye on my mail and file as soon as my new card arrives. Hopefully the DMV estimate of 7-10 days is accurate!

Good decision! Just make sure you file as soon as you get that ID. Remember that you can backdate your claim if needed, but only within a limited timeframe. Best of luck!

Smart choice waiting for your new ID! I went through this exact situation last year and learned the hard way that EDD's ID.me system is incredibly strict about expiration dates. Even being expired by just a few days caused my claim to get stuck in verification limbo for over a month. The automated system flags expired documents immediately and then you're dealing with manual review processes that take forever. When I finally got my new ID and refiled, everything went through smoothly in just a few days. The peace of mind is worth the short wait!
