EDD eligibility interview scheduled but just received certification email - confused about my attendance termination case
I got fired from my restaurant job last month for missing too many shifts (had some family emergencies) and applied for unemployment. EDD scheduled an eligibility interview for this Thursday to discuss my termination circumstances, but just today I received an email telling me to certify for benefits? I'm confused - does getting the certification email mean they're okay with my situation and might cancel the interview? Also, I can't even log into UI Online to do the certification because my account number isn't working. The system says I opened a UI claim previously (I did back in 2021 briefly), so I can't use the new account number they gave me. How am I supposed to certify if I can't even log in? Anyone dealt with this before? Should I wait until after the interview or try to fix the login issue now?

The certification email is automated and doesn't mean anything about your eligibility. You still need to attend your interview on Thursday - that's when they'll determine if your attendance issues qualify as misconduct or if you'll be eligible for benefits. Missing the interview would likely result in automatic disqualification. As for your login issues, that's a separate problem. You need to call EDD technical support to merge your old and new accounts. The certification can wait until after your interview, but it's better to get your account fixed now so you're ready to certify right away if approved.

•Thank you for explaining! I was hoping the certification email meant good news. Do you think I have a decent chance with my case? The absences were because my mom was in the hospital, but I did miss giving proper notice for 2 of them.

The certification email is sent out automatically by the system and has nothing to do with your eligibility status. Your eligibility interview is still absolutely necessary, and that's where they'll determine if you qualify for benefits after being terminated for attendance issues. For your login problem, you need to contact EDD directly. Your old account from 2021 is still in the system, and they need to link it with your new claim. This is very common and happens to many people who have filed previously. For your upcoming interview, make sure to clearly explain the family emergencies that caused your absences. If you have any documentation of the emergencies (medical records, etc.), have those ready. The interviewer will be determining if your absences constitute "misconduct" which would disqualify you, or if they were for good cause, which might make you eligible despite the termination.

•This is really helpful, thank you. I have some texts with my boss about my mom being in the hospital, but I'm worried because for a couple absences I just called out the morning of instead of giving 24-hour notice like our policy required. Do you think that will be considered misconduct?

For the login issue, you have a few options: 1. Call the EDD technical support line at 1-833-978-2511 (though getting through can be very difficult) 2. Try using the "Forgot Password" option with your SSN and personal info 3. Visit an EDD office in person if possible I'd recommend trying to resolve this before your interview so you're ready to certify immediately if approved. If you wait until after the interview and are approved, you might delay your payments further.

•Calling that number is IMPOSSIBLE!! I tried for 2 weeks straight and either got hung up on or was on hold for 4+ hours before giving up. The system is designed to frustrate people until they give up. Smh

If ur having trouble getting thru to EDD on the phone try using Claimyr. I was in the exact same situation last month - couldn't log in because I had a previous claim from years ago. I used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an EDD rep in like 20 minutes who fixed my account. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Worth it for the headache it saved me. Good luck with ur interview too!

•I've never heard of this before. Is it legit? Has anyone else used it? I'm desperate to get this sorted before my interview.

•I've used Claimyr twice. It does work for getting through to EDD. Just know they don't guarantee the EDD rep will be able to solve your specific problem, just that you'll get connected to someone instead of facing busy signals all day.

DO NOT MISS THAT INTERVIEW!!!! I missed mine because I thought the certification email meant I was approved and they disqualified me automatically. Had to appeal and wait 6 MORE WEEKS for a hearing. EDD's system is completely broken - they send confusing messages that contradict each other. The certification email means NOTHING about your eligibility!!!

•Oh wow, that's scary! I'll definitely make sure to be available for the interview. Did your appeal work out in the end?

•Yes but it was a nightmare. Had to wait 6 weeks with NO MONEY coming in, then had a hearing with a judge. Ended up getting approved but the stress nearly killed me. Just make sure you're ready for that interview and have proof of why you missed work!

not sure about the interview but for the login I had the same exact problem and what worked for me was using the "manage existing claim" option instead of trying to register a new account. try your old account info first

•I tried that but I can't remember my old password from 2021. When I try the password reset, it sends a verification to an old email I don't have access to anymore. It's so frustrating!

Regarding your termination for attendance: Whether this counts as misconduct depends on several factors that the interviewer will consider: 1. Were the absences for reasons beyond your control (like your family emergency)? 2. Did you follow company policy for reporting absences when possible? 3. Were you warned about attendance issues before termination? 4. Did you make reasonable efforts to maintain your employment? Bring any documentation of your family emergency and any communications with your employer about the absences. Be honest but emphasize that the absences were due to genuine emergencies. Sometimes even if you didn't follow proper notice procedures for legitimate emergencies, EDD may still find in your favor.

•Thank you! I did get one written warning about attendance about 2 months before I was fired. For the most recent absences, I have some texts about my mom's hospital stay but not official medical documentation. I hope that's enough.

For your interview, here's what to prepare: 1. Timeline of absences with reasons 2. Any documentation of emergencies (texts, emails, hospital paperwork if available) 3. Know your employer's attendance policy 4. Explain why you couldn't provide proper notice when required 5. Be ready to discuss any prior warnings Stay calm and factual during the interview. The EDD interviewer isn't looking to trick you - they're gathering information to determine if your separation from employment qualifies you for benefits. As for certifying, you should still do it if you can get your account issues resolved, but understand that you won't receive payments until after a favorable eligibility determination.

Actually, I recommend certifying regardless of whether your interview has happened yet. If your eligibility is approved, EDD will process payments for the weeks you've certified. If you wait to certify until after approval, you'll have to wait even longer for payments. So fix your account issue asap and certify for any weeks you can. For your account issues, when you call EDD, specifically mention that you need to have your previous UI Online account linked to your new claim. This is a common issue they deal with all the time.

•Thanks for the advice! I'll try to get through to them tomorrow morning. Do you think it's better to call right when they open?

•In my experience, calling between 8:01-8:15am or after 1:30pm tends to have slightly better chances of getting through. But honestly, it's always a struggle. That's why some people use services to help them get through.
