EDD disqualified me without explanation - Can I walk in to EDD office for answers?
I'm at my wit's end with EDD. I got laid off from my bookkeeping job on December 7th and filed for unemployment the same day. It's now late January and my claim shows 'disqualified' with absolutely ZERO explanation! Nothing in the mail, no messages in UI Online inbox, nothing. I've tried calling at least 25 times over the past two weeks and either get disconnected or told 'maximum callers reached.' Has anyone successfully gone directly to an EDD office as a walk-in? Do they even allow that anymore? I have rent due in a week and absolutely need to figure out why I was disqualified and how to appeal. This is beyond frustrating!

Unfortunately, most EDD offices don't take walk-ins anymore for UI claim issues - they primarily handle in-person ID verification by appointment only. The disqualification likely happened for one of these reasons: 1) They questioned your reason for separation (employer might have reported something different), 2) There's an identity verification issue, or 3) There's a wage dispute. Check your UI Online account under 'History' tab for any determination letters you might have missed. You need to file an appeal ASAP - you only have 30 days from the date of disqualification.

•Thanks for this info. I checked the History tab again and there's nothing there! I've looked through every corner of my UI Online account and zero explanation. How am I supposed to appeal something when I don't even know what I'm appealing? This is making me so anxious.

same thing happnd to me last yr!! EDD is HORRIBLE at sending notices! check ur spam folder maybe?? also sometimes they mail stuff to wrong address even when u update ur info online. the disqualification could be from something super minor too

•I've checked my spam folder obsessively and nothing from EDD. My address is correct in the system too. The worst part is not knowing what I need to fix!

If you can't get through on the regular line, try using Claimyr. It's a service that connects you with an EDD representative much faster than trying on your own. I was in a similar situation (disqualified for a reason I couldn't figure out) and wasted days trying to call. Used Claimyr and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes who explained everything and helped me file my appeal. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com. It was honestly worth it just to finally get answers.

•is that thing legit? sounds sketchy to pay someone just to get throught to EDD when its a free service

•It's completely legitimate. They don't replace EDD or file anything for you - they just help you skip the phone queue to connect with an actual EDD rep. After weeks of not getting through, it was a relief to finally talk to someone who could explain my disqualification.

Listen, I've been dealing with EDD for 15+ years (unfortunately lol). Here's what you NEED to do: 1. File an appeal RIGHT NOW even without knowing the reason. On the appeal form just write "I was disqualified without explanation and request a hearing to determine eligibility." You can amend your appeal later. 2. Contact your State Assembly member's office ASAP!! Seriously, this is THE fastest way to get answers. Google "[your city] state assembly member" and they'll have a constituent services team that can contact EDD directly. They have special channels and can get answers within days sometimes. 3. Keep trying to call in the meantime, but focus on steps 1 and 2. The 30-day appeal window is CRITICAL. Don't miss it while waiting for answers!

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I didn't know I could file an appeal without knowing the reason - that's super helpful. I'll do that today and contact my assembly member right after. Really appreciate the concrete steps!

So I had the EXACT same problem back in November! Turns out my former employer contested my claim saying I quit rather than being laid off (complete lie). EDD NEVER notified me about this, just disqualified me. I only found out when I finally got through to someone on the phone. The determination letter supposedly got "lost in the mail" 🙄 Definitely file that appeal ASAP even without knowing why. And be prepared for a long wait - my appeal hearing is scheduled for March even though I filed in November!

•this happened to me to!! employer lied and said i was fired for misconduct when i was actually laid off bcuz they closed my department. took 4 months to get it resolved. make sure u have any proof of layoff like emails or anything from HR to take to appeal.

•Oh no, this is what I'm afraid of. My company did a mass layoff but what if they're reporting something different? I have my layoff letter thankfully. 4 months is a terrifyingly long time to wait though! I can't go that long without income.

i got disqualifed once and it was cause i accidently clicked the wrong box on one of those bi-weekly certifications. something about being available for work. maybe check if u made a mistake on one of those?

•I've only been able to certify once so far, and I triple-checked everything before submitting. But maybe I did make a mistake without realizing it? It's so frustrating not knowing!

OP, based on your timeline, this sounds like it might be an identity verification issue. New claims filed in December often get flagged for ID verification, especially if this is your first time claiming UI. Check if you have any messages asking you to verify through ID.me. Sometimes these go to your spam or the notification doesn't come through properly, but your claim gets disqualified if you don't complete verification within a certain timeframe. If this is the case, you'll need to speak with someone at EDD to restart the verification process. Keep trying the phone lines early in the morning (8:01 AM) or try alternate numbers like the technical support line who can sometimes transfer you.

•I did complete ID.me verification when I first applied! I got the confirmation email and everything. But maybe something went wrong with how it connected to my claim? I'll definitely try calling right when they open tomorrow and will try the technical support line too.

Just wanted to update you - I checked with a friend who works at an assembly member's office. She confirmed they're seeing a lot of cases where people are getting disqualified without proper notification right now. Apparently EDD is having system issues with their notification delivery. Definitely follow the advice about contacting your assembly member - they can usually get a response from EDD within 5-7 business days.

•I can confirm this. My sister works for a state senator and their office has been flooded with EDD cases like this since the new year. They're speculating it's tied to some system updates EDD made in December that messed up the automatic notification system. The good news is these are usually pretty easy for legislative offices to resolve since it's a known issue.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Turns out there was an issue with my ID verification - even though I completed ID.me successfully, it somehow didn't properly link to my EDD account. The rep was actually really helpful and reactivated the verification process on their end. She said I should receive instructions in my UI Online inbox within 48 hours and once I complete that, my disqualification should be removed within 5-7 business days. Thank you all for your advice! I've still submitted an appeal just in case (better safe than sorry), and I'm contacting my assembly member today too as backup. Will update again once everything is resolved.

•That's great news! Smart move on filing the appeal anyway - always good to have that as backup. Thanks for updating us!

•I called exactly at 8:01am and got the 'too many callers' message 4 times in a row. On the 5th try around 8:10am I finally got into the queue with a 47 minute wait time. Just kept hitting redial basically!
