EDD claim reopening timing after final payment - stuck in UI Online loop
Just received my final UI payment yesterday and already need to reopen my claim (seasonal construction work fell through again...sigh). When I log into UI Online and click 'Reopen Your Claim,' I keep getting redirected to my claim summary page with no option to actually reopen anything. Is there a mandatory waiting period between getting your last payment and being able to reopen? The FAQs aren't clear about this. My benefit year doesn't end until November 2025, so I should still be eligible. Anyone know if I need to wait a few days or if the system is just being glitchy as usual?

•But I already certified for my last week and got paid yesterday. That's why I'm confused - shouldn't the system let me reopen now?

There's actually a 4-day processing period after your last payment before the system will allow you to reopen a claim. Even though you received your payment, the EDD's internal system hasn't fully processed the claim closure yet. Try again on Monday and the reopen option should be available. If not, you might be experiencing the common UI Online glitch where it doesn't show the reopen button when it should. When that happens, you need to call EDD directly.

•Thank you! Nobody at EDD told me about the 4-day wait period. I'll try again on Monday and hopefully it works.

I had the EXACT same issue last month!! The reopen button never appeared even after waiting a full week. Complete system failure on their end. I wasted 3 days trying to get through on the phone - kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and disconnects. BEYOND FRUSTRATING!!!!

•Ugh, that sounds awful. Did you eventually get through to them? I'm hoping the button appears after waiting but not feeling optimistic based on your experience.

I've reopened my claim 4 times (entertainment industry work fluctuations). Each time was different but the key is waiting until the system updates. Sometimes it's 3 days, sometimes it's 5. The system is incredibly inconsistent.

•This is actually good to know! I'm a substitute teacher and will need to reopen during summer break. Did you always get all your backpay from when you tried to reopen until you actually got through the system? I'm worried about missing weeks while fighting with their system.

The issue you're experiencing is actually quite common with UI Online. Here's what's happening technically: 1. There's a system processing period (typically 3-5 business days) after your final payment before reopening becomes available 2. The UI Online portal sometimes experiences sync issues with the main EDD database 3. If the button doesn't appear after waiting, it usually indicates a technical glitch If waiting doesn't resolve it, calling is your best option. However, reaching an EDD representative by phone can be extremely difficult. I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they helped me get connected to an EDD rep within 20 minutes when I had the exact same reopening issue. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once you reach a rep, they can manually trigger the reopening option on your account - takes them about 2 minutes to fix.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll wait the full 5 business days first, and if the button still doesn't appear, I'll check out that service. Didn't know something like that existed - would definitely be worth it to avoid days of calling.

•RIGHT?? The whole system is held together with digital duct tape at this point! And we're the ones who suffer while they refuse to update anything!!!

Just wanted to follow up - it's also important to know that when you do reopen, you'll need to complete a new work search record for each week. Under current requirements, you need to document at least 3 work search activities per week. Make sure you're keeping detailed records of job applications, contacts, networking, etc. Many reopened claims get flagged for eligibility interviews if the work search isn't properly documented.

•Really appreciate the heads up. I've been keeping good records of applications, but didn't realize reopened claims get extra scrutiny. I'll make sure my documentation is extra thorough.

So my brother's girlfriend's cousin works at EDD (I know sounds like a joke but true) and she says there's actually no set waiting period programmed into the system! It's literally just that different parts of their database don't talk to each other properly so sometimes it works right away and sometimes it takes days. Totally depends on which server your account data is stored on and when the batch updates run. Peak government efficiency lol

•That explains why my experiences reopening have been different each time! I thought I was going crazy or doing something different. Classic EDD chaos.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that the reopen button appeared exactly 4 business days after my last payment, just like some of you suggested. The system let me complete the reopening process without any issues. Thanks for all your help and advice!

•Great to hear! Make sure to certify as soon as the weeks become available, and remember to document your work search activities thoroughly.

Glad you got it sorted out! For anyone else dealing with this issue, I'd recommend bookmarking this thread - it's got all the real info you need. The 4-day processing period seems to be the most reliable timeline based on everyone's experiences here. Also worth noting that if you're in seasonal work like construction or entertainment, it might be worth keeping a log of when you close/reopen claims so you can predict the timing better for future gaps. The EDD system is unpredictable enough without having to guess about processing times!
