EDD certification timing question - will payment arrive same day as biweekly certification?

I'm coming up on my next certification date (10/2/24) and really need to plan my finances carefully this month. When I certified two weeks ago, I received my payment the same day on 9/18/24. Is this always the case? Will I definitely get my benefit payment on the same day that I submit my certification? I'm worried because I have rent due on 10/3 and I'm cutting it really close. Does anyone know if there's ever a delay between certifying and payment posting to your account? Thanks for any insight!

it depends on what time u certify tbh... if u do it right at midnight when the system opens up u usually get it same day but if u wait til later sometimes it takes til next day. ive had both happen. also depends on ur bank how fast they process the direct deposit

Thanks for responding! So you think midnight is the best time? Can I set an alarm and do it right when the system lets me at midnight between 10/1 and 10/2? I'm just so worried about making rent on time.

In my experience, if you're set up with direct deposit and you certify early in the day, you'll typically receive your payment the same day. However, there are always exceptions due to system maintenance, high volume periods, or occasional random delays. For a payment that critical to your rent, I'd recommend certifying as early as possible on 10/2 - some people do it right at midnight when the system opens up. Also check that you don't have any pending issues with your claim that might delay processing. Is this a regular UI claim or something else?

This is regular UI. I lost my job at the warehouse when they downsized last month. So far my claim has been going smoothly with no issues or interviews. I guess I'll set an alarm for midnight and certify right away! I didn't realize the time of day mattered that much.

My payment ALWAYS takes 2 days no matter when I certify!!! EDD is so inconsistent with how they handle different people's claims it's ridiculous. Some people get paid same day, some next day, some like me always waiting 2 days for no reason. The system is broken.

Are you using direct deposit or the Money Network card? Because that makes a HUGE difference. With the card it always takes longer in my experience. I switched to direct deposit and now I get mine same day almost every time.

I'm using direct deposit!!! And it STILL takes 2 days every single time!! They must have some kind of weird system that flags certain people for slower processing. My friend certifies same time as me and gets hers in hours.

I've been on UI for about 4 months now and here's what I've learned about certification and payment timing: 1. If you certify between midnight and about 8:30am, you'll usually get same-day payment 2. If you certify after that, it typically processes overnight and posts next day 3. Sometimes the system gets bogged down on busy certification days and everything slows down 4. If there's ANY issue with your certification answers, it could trigger a review that delays payment Since you're counting on this for rent that's due the next day, I'd absolutely certify right at midnight to maximize your chances of same-day payment. Also, double-check all your certification answers carefully - even one wrong answer could delay things.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely certify right at midnight and double-check all my answers. I'm really careful about reporting any income accurately. Would it help if I call EDD the next morning to make sure everything went through correctly?

If you need to reach EDD urgently, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last month where I needed to confirm my payment was processing correctly before a big bill was due. I tried calling for days with no luck, then used their service and got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. It was worth it to get my payment issue resolved quickly instead of stressing for days.

One thing no one mentioned - if this is your first payment after serving any penalty weeks, it can sometimes take longer to process than your regular ongoing payments. But if you already received a payment on 9/18 without issues, you should be good to go with the same timing for this one. Just be sure you don't have any special circumstances this time (like reporting income) that might trigger additional review.

No, I'm past my waiting week and have been receiving payments regularly. I haven't worked at all since being laid off so I haven't had to report any income. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly!

when my friend had this problem where he needed the money by a specific date he just called his landlord and explained the situation... most landlords will give u a couple extra days if u communicate ahead of time js

That's actually smart... I should probably just call my landlord tomorrow and explain that I might be a day late. Better to communicate ahead of time than to stress so much about it. Thanks for the advice!

Glad to see you're getting good advice here. One final tip: after you certify, keep checking your UI Online account throughout the day. You'll see when your payment status changes from "pending" to "paid" - which usually means the money is on its way. If it's still showing "pending" by late afternoon on 10/2, that might indicate there's going to be a delay and you should contact your landlord as suggested.

That's a great suggestion - I'll keep refreshing my UI Online account to track the status change. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much better prepared now.
