EDD certification mistake: Listed consulting client as employer instead of self-employed. How to fix?
I messed up big time with my unemployment certification and now I'm in a pickle. I've been doing some part-time consulting work and I listed the company I was consulting for as my employer instead of putting myself down as self-employed. Now the company got a notice from the state and they're freaking out about potential penalties or increased unemployment insurance premiums. I need to fix this ASAP for the past weeks and figure out how to fill out the certification correctly going forward. Anyone been through something similar or know how to handle this without getting myself or the company in trouble?

I've been wrestling with EDD for 6 months now. It's like trying to nail jello to a tree. Hang in there, OP!

Plot twist: what if you start a company, hire yourself, then consult for other companies through your own company? 🤔 Problem solved!

On a serious note, setting up an LLC can simplify things if you do a lot of freelance or contract work.

I agree! It's like they don't want people to be able to fix mistakes easily.

Hey, quick question - when you say you listed the company as your employer, was this on the initial claim or just on the weekly certifications?

It was on the weekly certifications. I messed up for several weeks in a row. 😓

If it's just on the weekly certifications, it might be easier to correct than if it was on the initial claim. Good luck!

Have you tried reaching out to the company you were consulting for? They might be able to help clarify things with EDD. Just a thought.

Be careful with that. Sometimes getting more people involved can complicate things.

If you do involve them, make sure you explain your situation clearly to avoid any misunderstandings. Their HR department might have dealt with similar cases before.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. (https://claimyr.com

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken.

Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true.

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

While $20 might seem like a lot, sometimes paying for convenience or to save time is worth it. Plus, if it helps resolve the issue, it's a small price in the bigger picture.

Oof, that's a tough situation. I've been there before with unemployment paperwork. Here's what I'd recommend: 1. Call EDD asap and explain the situation 2. Be honest about the mistake and ask how to correct it 3. Get everything in writing - follow up with an email after the call 4. Ask about any potential penalties and how to avoid them 5. Double check all your future certifications Good luck, hope it works out for you!

Great advice! I would also suggest keeping a log of all communications with the EDD, as it might be helpful if you need to reference past conversations.

Have you considered hiring a lawyer? Sometimes it's worth it to get professional help with these things.

Hadn't thought about that. Isn't it expensive tho?

It can be, but some offer free consultations. Might be worth checking out.

A lawyer can also ensure you're handling things correctly from a legal standpoint, which can prevent further complications.

Dude, you're not alone. The EDD website is like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded while riding a unicycle. 🤡 I've made so many mistakes on those forms, it's not even funny anymore.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't panic. Mistakes happen and EDD deals with this stuff all the time. 2. Gather all your documentation - dates you worked, how much you earned, etc. 3. Write a clear, concise explanation of what happened. 4. Call EDD (use that Claimyr thing if you need to get through). 5. Be polite but persistent. Sometimes you need to talk to a supervisor to get things fixed. 6. Follow up in writing after the call. 7. Keep checking your online account for updates. 8. For future certifications, make sure you're listing yourself as self-employed. Remember, you're not the first person to make this mistake and you won't be the last. Stay calm and keep pushing until it's resolved.

I would add that it's important to stay organized and document everything as you go. It makes it easier to track your progress and see what steps still need to be taken.
