EDD call dropped mid-claim filing - best times to call EDD without endless busy signals?

Just had the WORST luck with EDD today! I finally got through to a rep after only trying once this morning around 11am. She started filing my claim and was asking me some questions, but right as I picked up the phone to answer her, the call dropped! No callback, nothing. I've been calling non-stop for the past 3 hours and can't get through - just constant busy signals or that automatic "we're experiencing high call volume" message before it hangs up on me. I'm going crazy here! Does anyone know the best time to call EDD to actually get through? Is the morning always better? I had luck at 11am on my first try earlier today, but now it seems completely impossible. Any tricks or specific times that have worked for you? I really need to finish filing this claim and I'm worried the partial info they have will mess something up.

Thanks! Ugh, I should've known that. Will try calling exactly at 8am tomorrow. Do you know if I should ask for the same rep I was talking to earlier, or will any agent be able to pick up where we left off?

I've had consistent success calling on Thursdays between 8:15-8:45am. For some reason, that specific day and timeframe seems to have lower call volume. Avoid Mondays and Tuesdays at all costs - those are their busiest days because of weekend backlogs. Regarding your dropped call situation, don't worry too much. The representative likely saved the information you provided before the call disconnected. When you get through again, just explain what happened and they should be able to locate your partial claim in their system. Make sure you have your ID and employment information ready again, though, as they'll need to verify your identity before accessing your file.

I had EXACTLY the same issue last month! Was on the phone for 40 minutes, got to the end of filing my claim, and then the call dropped during the final verification questions. I was LIVID!!!! 😡😡😡 I spent 3 days trying to get through again with no luck. Finally broke down and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. They have this service that calls EDD for you and then connects you when an agent picks up. Worked perfectly and I didn't have to waste days redialing. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km When I finally got through, the rep told me my partial claim was still in the system but had been flagged as incomplete. If I hadn't called back within 10 days, it would have been deleted and I'd have had to start over. So definitely keep trying to get through ASAP!

Thank you so much for the info! I'm getting really nervous about my partial claim being deleted. I might check out that service if I can't get through tomorrow morning. Did they charge a lot? And was your claim processed correctly once you finally got through?

From my experience working with many unemployment claimants, I can offer some perspective on this situation. When a call drops during the claim filing process, the EDD representative typically saves what they've entered so far, but the claim will be marked as incomplete in their system. You have approximately 7-10 business days to complete the claim before it may be purged from their active queue. The good news is that all the information entered before the disconnect should still be there - you won't need to start completely over. Regarding call times, the EDD's phone systems are programmed to accept more callers at the beginning of each shift. Their main shifts start at 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The sweet spots for calling are typically: - 8:00 AM - 8:20 AM (best chance overall) - 1:00 PM - 1:15 PM (decent chance) - 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM (lower volume, but fewer agents available) Wednesdays and Thursdays tend to have lower call volumes than Mondays and Tuesdays. Friday afternoons can also be good as many callers don't expect to get through before the weekend and don't try. When you do connect, immediately explain that you had a dropped call while filing your claim and ask them to check if your partial claim is still in the system. Have your ID information and employment details ready.

This is super helpful thanks!! Do u know if they actually look at which questions were answered when the call dropped? Mine got cut off during the citizenship question and im worried if that will be a problem

omg the EDD phone system is THE WORST!!!! i swear they do this on purpose to discourage people from getting benefits. last time i was trying to certify and got stuck in pending for 2 months!!! had to call like 56 times before getting through. i hate our system so much its such a joke compared to other states.

56 times?! That's insane. I'm already at like 20+ calls today with no luck. Did you ever figure out any specific trick that finally worked for you?

For what it's worth, when I got through using Claimyr, the EDD rep told me that she could see everything that had been entered in my partial claim before it dropped - my work history, SSN, etc. She just had to verify my identity again (obvs security reasons) and then we picked up exactly where it left off. Only cost me $20ish and saved me days of headache - totally worth it for me since I was freaking out about my claim expiring. One important thing: when you do get through, make sure to ask them to leave a note in your file with a callback number and extension in case it happens again. That way if the call drops during your NEXT call, they actually CAN call you back (they're not supposed to otherwise).

That's brilliant about asking them to note a callback number! Will definitely do that. I'm going to try calling at 8am tomorrow, but if that doesn't work, I'll check out the Claimyr option. I'm just nervous about getting this claim completed correctly.

i dont no why noone mensioned this but try calling the 833 number instead of the 800 one!!! sometimes it works better and has different wait times. also try pressing different options. like if u say ur calling about disability instead of unemployment sometimes u can get transferd to unemployment dept faster!!

Please be careful with this approach. While it might occasionally work, selecting incorrect options can often result in longer wait times as you get transferred between departments. Also, the 833 number is specifically for PUA claims, which were pandemic-related benefits that are no longer available for new claims in 2025. For regular UI claims, the main 800 number is still the correct channel.

One additional tip that might help: When you do manage to get through to an EDD representative, immediately ask for their direct extension or ID number. This won't guarantee that you can reach them directly if you call back, but if you get disconnected again, you can at least reference who you were speaking with when you call again. Also, I'd recommend preparing a brief "claim summary" document for yourself with all the key information you need to provide. This way, if you do get through, you can efficiently complete the claim without scrambling for information, which reduces the time spent on the phone and the chance of another disconnection. Include details such as: - Your employment history for the past 18 months (employer names, addresses, phone numbers) - Start and end dates for each job - Reason for separation from each employer - Your gross earnings for the last week worked - Any vacation or severance pay received Having this information readily available has helped many of my clients complete their claims more efficiently during their brief windows of connection with EDD representatives.

Thank you! This is so helpful. I'm going to put together that claim summary right now so I'm prepared for when I call tomorrow morning. Really appreciate the detailed advice!

I feel your pain! I went through something similar last year. One thing that really helped me was using the EDD website's "Contact EDD" feature to send a message about my dropped call situation. While they don't respond quickly (took about 5 days), when I did get through on the phone later, the rep could see my message in the system and it actually helped speed things up since she knew exactly what had happened. Also, if you're calling from a cell phone, make sure you're in an area with strong signal. I learned the hard way that even small signal drops can cause the call to disconnect on EDD's end, even if your phone shows full bars. I started calling from my landline after that and never had another dropped call issue. Good luck with the 8am call tomorrow! The advice about having everything ready is spot on - the faster you can get through the questions, the less chance of technical issues messing things up.

That's a great point about the signal strength! I've been calling from my cell phone and didn't even think about that being an issue. I don't have a landline but maybe I can try calling from a different location with better reception. The website message idea is smart too - even if it takes a few days, at least there would be a record of what happened. Thanks for the tips!
