EDD asking me to reapply after only filing 3 days ago - normal procedure?

I just filed my initial unemployment claim this past Sunday (April 2nd) after being laid off from my warehouse position. When I logged into UI Online today to check my claim status, I got a message saying I need to reapply for benefits! This seems weird since it's only been 3 days. Is this a normal part of the process or did something go wrong with my application? Should I go ahead and reapply or wait longer to see if I get something in the mail first? I'm worried about messing up my claim by submitting multiple applications. Anyone dealt with this before?

same thing happened 2 me last month!! dont reapply yet, wait at least 10 days. EDD systems are crazy slow in 2025 lol

Thanks! Did you end up getting your claim processed correctly or did you have to reapply anyway?

This is actually a known glitch in the UI Online system. When you file a new claim, there's about a 7-10 day processing period before it fully registers in their system. During this time, the system sometimes shows the generic "apply for benefits" message because it hasn't fully processed your initial application yet. I would recommend: 1. Wait at least 10 days from your initial filing date 2. Check your mail daily for the EDD Customer Account Number letter 3. After you receive that letter, register it in your UI Online account 4. If after 10 days you still see the same message AND haven't received anything in the mail, then consider calling EDD for clarification Your claim is likely processing normally, this is just a quirk in their system display.

Thank you so much for explaining this! I'll wait for the mail and check back in 10 days. Really appreciate the detailed steps.

My neighbor had this EXACT SAME PROBLEM last week!!! She waited 5 days and then just filed again because she panicked and guess what? She got DOUBLE DENIED because the system flagged her for submitting multiple claims!!! Now she's been waiting for 3 weeks trying to reach someone at EDD to fix it! THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!!

I understand your frustration, but this information isn't entirely accurate. Filing twice doesn't typically result in automatic denials - instead it usually flags the claim for review, which can add processing time. The best approach is still to wait the standard processing period (7-10 business days) before taking additional action. If you need to contact EDD urgently about claim issues, I've had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a representative quickly rather than spending hours on hold. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

im confused isnt there supposed to be a waiting week anyway? maybe thats why its telling u to reapply? i forget how it works its been awhile since i had to file

The waiting week is different from the application processing time. The waiting week is the first week of your claim where you're eligible but don't receive payment - you still need to certify for it. The system asking to reapply is related to the initial claim processing, not the waiting week.

When I filed back in February, I waited exactly 7 business days and then received my Customer Account Number in the mail. Two days after that, the UI Online portal updated and showed my claim status. The system gives weird messages sometimes during this limbo period. My advice: - Don't reapply yet - Make sure you check both your physical mail AND your UI Online inbox (they sometimes send electronic notices only) - If nothing changes after 10 business days, then it's time to call Also, keep track of your work search activities starting from your first week, even if you can't certify yet. You'll need those records when certification becomes available.

Great point about keeping track of work search activities! I hadn't thought about that yet. Will start documenting everything right away.

I had something similar happen but it turned out I made an error on my application (wrong employer phone number) and that's why it was asking me to reapply. Maybe double-check all your info? Sometimes they don't explicitly tell you what's wrong. Though usually they'd send an email or message about issues.

I double-checked everything before submitting, but I guess it's possible I made a mistake somewhere. I'll review the confirmation details again just to be sure. Thanks!

Just checking back - has your claim status updated yet? It's been about a week since your original post.

Yes! I got my Customer Account Number in the mail yesterday and this morning the UI Online portal updated with my claim information. You were absolutely right about the glitch - I just needed to wait. Thanks everyone for keeping me from panicking and filing twice!

That's great news! Thanks for following up with the resolution - it really helps other people who might run into the same issue. Stories like yours are exactly why it's so important to resist the urge to immediately reapply when the system shows confusing messages. The 7-10 day processing window seems to be pretty consistent based on everyone's experiences here. Glad everything worked out for you!

Absolutely agree! This whole thread should be pinned or something - so many people probably go through this same panic when they see that confusing reapply message. I'm new to all this unemployment stuff and was actually getting worried about my own claim I filed last week, but reading through everyone's experiences here has been super helpful. It's reassuring to know that the 7-10 day wait is normal and that the system just has these quirky glitches during processing.

This is such valuable information for anyone dealing with EDD! I'm bookmarking this thread for future reference. It's crazy how a simple system glitch can cause so much anxiety when you're already stressed about being unemployed. Bruno, thanks for sharing your experience and following up with the resolution - it really shows how patience pays off even when the system seems broken. For anyone else reading this, it seems like the key takeaways are: 1) Don't panic and reapply immediately, 2) Wait the full 7-10 business days, 3) Watch your mail for the Customer Account Number, and 4) Document work search activities from day one. This community is awesome for helping each other navigate these confusing processes!
