EDD UI Online won't let me file new claim after working - old claim ended last year, what to do?

I need help filing a new unemployment claim. I tried to file online but it says I 'can't file a new claim' right now. My old claim ended last year and I've been working since then, but I just lost my job. I earned wages and everything. What should I do? Has anyone else run into this problem?

I found a way to solve EDD claim filing issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzZZ4KRMiAA

This happened to me too! Turns out there was a lag in reporting my wages to EDD. I had to fax (yes, FAX in 2023 🙄) my last few pay stubs to prove I had been working. After that, they let me file a new claim.

Pro tip: There are apps that let you "fax" documents from your phone. Welcome to the future... of the past 😂

Yo, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

Sounds sketchy af. You sure this isn't a scam?

$20 just to talk to EDD? That's highway robbery! 😤

Nah, it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth the $20 imo

How long did you have to wait after using this service?

While Claimyr offers a solution, it's important to weigh the cost versus the benefit. For some, the $20 fee is worth bypassing the frustration, but others might prefer attempting all free options first.

Ugh, the EDD system is such a mess. I had the same issue last month. You'll probably need to call them directly to sort this out. Good luck getting through tho 🙄

I totally agree. It seems like EDD is constantly overwhelmed. Has anyone tried reaching out during non-peak hours? It might be worth a shot!

Anyone else miss the pandemic unemployment assistance? At least then we could actually get through to someone 😭

I swear EDD is running on some ancient computer system held together with duct tape and prayers. They really need to upgrade their tech!

Bold of you to assume they've upgraded to Windows 😂

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documents: recent pay stubs, employment records, etc. 2. Write down important dates: when your last claim ended, when you started and ended your most recent job. 3. Call EDD (I know, I know, it's a pain) and explain your situation clearly. 4. Tell them you've earned wages since your last claim ended and recently lost your job. 5. Ask them to guide you through filing a new claim based on these new earnings. 6. Follow any instructions they give you about submitting documents. 7. Keep checking UI Online for updates on your new claim. Remember, persistence is key with EDD. Don't give up!

This is solid advice. I'd add: take notes during the call! Those EDD convos can get confusing real quick.

Mood. I've been trying to reach them for weeks. It's like trying to win the lottery at this point 🎰

Have you considered reaching out to your local assembly member's office? They sometimes have direct lines to EDD and can help push things through.

I didn't even know that was an option! How do I find my assembly member?

0 coins

Just google '[your city] assembly member'. Their office should have a contact form or number for constituent services. They deal with EDD issues all the time!

Have you tried checking your UI Online account? Sometimes there's more info there about why you can't file a new claim. It might be a technical glitch or there could be some specific reason they're not letting you file.

Yeah, I checked UI Online. It just says I didn't earn enough wages to establish a new claim and they're processing federal extension weeks. But that doesn't make sense cuz I've been working!

Sounds like their system hasn't updated with your new work history. Def gonna need to talk to a human to fix this one

The issue you're experiencing is unfortunately common due to the complexities of the EDD system and frequent lag in updating work history. An important step is to ensure all your documents are ready, as suggested in an earlier comment. If you have been working and your wages are not yet reflected, you might need to provide proof directly to EDD, possibly through fax or email. In addition to calling, you can utilize tools like Claimyr, which provide a way to bypass long hold times, although this comes with a $20 fee. While this service is legitimate and works for many, it's essential to consider if this expense is justifiable for your situation. Additionally, utilizing local assembly members can also aid in navigating the EDD system. Persistence is key here, and trying multiple methods, such as phone, fax, and even assembly member intervention, could eventually lead to a resolution. Good luck, and remember to check for online updates regularly.

Has anyone tried going to an EDD office in person? I know they're not really open for walk-ins, but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

I tried last month. They just gave me a phone number to call... the same one that never answers 🙃

Some offices are doing appointments now. Check their website, you might be able to schedule one!

Hey OP, any updates? Were you able to file your claim?

Not yet 😩 Still trying to get through to someone. Might try that calling service someone mentioned if I can't get through soon.

PSA: If you do manage to get through, ask them to put a note on your account about your new wages. It might help prevent this issue for others in the future!

That's a great idea! It could really help things move along faster if your account is clearly noted.

Anyone else feel like we're all just stuck in some kind of unemployment limbo? Kafka would have a field day with EDD 🤡

Have you tried filing by phone instead of online? Sometimes that works when the website is being glitchy.

Good idea! It's always worth trying different methods. Sometimes the phone system can handle issues better than the web interface.
