How do I refile for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
My unemployment claim expired last month and I still haven't found work. I heard I need to refile but I'm not sure what the process is. Do I start completely over or is there a way to reopen my existing claim? I was getting regular UI benefits, not any special programs. My benefit year ended in December and I just realized I need to do something to keep getting payments. Can someone explain the refiling process?

You'll need to file a new initial claim since your benefit year ended. Go to the Washington ESD website and start the application process like you did originally. Make sure you have your employment history for the past 18 months ready.

•Do I need to wait a certain amount of time between claims or can I file right away?

•You can file immediately after your benefit year ends. Don't wait or you might miss out on benefits you're entitled to.

Same situation happened to me last year. The refiling process is basically starting over with a new claim. They'll look at your wages from the past year to determine your new weekly benefit amount.

•Did your benefit amount change when you refiled?

•Yeah mine went down a bit because I had some lower paying jobs mixed in there. But still better than nothing!

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about refiling, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does that cost though? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to Washington ESD.

•I get the frustration but for me it was worth it to actually get my questions answered instead of being stuck in phone limbo for weeks.

MAKE SURE you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for your new claim to be processed! I made that mistake and lost 3 weeks of benefits because I thought I had to wait.

•Wait, how can I file weekly claims if I don't have an active claim yet?

Kai Santiago
•You file them for the new claim once it's submitted. Washington ESD will tell you when to start filing weekly claims during the application process.

•This is confusing. I thought you couldn't file weekly claims until your new claim was approved?

To clarify the weekly claims confusion - you start filing weekly claims for your new claim once Washington ESD processes your initial application, even if the claim is still under review. Don't wait for full approval.

•That makes more sense. So I file the new claim first, then start doing weekly claims when they tell me to.

Clay blendedgen
•Exactly. Usually takes a few days to a week after you submit your initial claim before you can start filing weekly claims.

ugh this whole system is so confusing why cant they just make it automatic if your benefits run out

Ayla Kumar
•I know right? Other states do it automatically but Washington makes you jump through hoops.

•It's because they need to recalculate your benefits based on more recent work history. It's annoying but there's a reason for it.

One thing to watch out for - if you worked at all during your last claim, that income might affect your new benefit calculation. Washington ESD looks at wages from your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters.

•I did work a few temp jobs while on unemployment. Will that hurt my new claim?
0 coins
Lorenzo McCormick
•Not necessarily hurt it, but they'll factor those wages into your new benefit amount calculation. Could go up or down depending on your total wages.

Does anyone know if there's a gap in payments when you refile? Like do you lose a week or two while they process the new claim?

Ayla Kumar
•Yeah there's usually a waiting period. I think I went about 2 weeks without payments while they processed my refiled claim.

•That's why it's so important to file as soon as your benefit year ends! Don't wait around thinking about it.

I'm in the same boat but I moved to a different county since my last claim. Do I need to do anything different when refiling?
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Nope, just update your address information when you file. Washington ESD covers the whole state so moving counties doesn't matter.

•Good to know, thanks! I was worried I'd have to deal with some kind of transfer process.

Quick question - if I'm refiling do I still need to register with WorkSource again?
0 coins
Lorenzo McCormick
•Your WorkSource registration should still be active unless it's been a really long time. But double check because you need that for the job search requirements.

•Thanks, I'll log in and make sure my profile is up to date.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely useless for getting help with refiling questions. I've been trying to call for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

Lorenzo McCormick
•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Got through to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of wasting days trying to call. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

•I'll look into that. This is ridiculous that we can't just get basic help when we need it.

For anyone refiling - make sure you have your Social Security card and ID ready. They might ask for verification documents even if you've claimed before.

Mary Bates
•Good point. Do they need the same work authorization documents as the first time?

Fidel Carson
•Usually not if nothing has changed, but have them ready just in case. Better to be prepared.

I refiled in November and my new claim got stuck in adjudication for some reason. Still waiting to hear back. Anyone else have this problem?

Ayla Kumar
•That happened to my neighbor. Took almost a month but it eventually got approved. Something about verifying work history I think.

Isaiah Sanders
•Ugh, a month? I can't wait that long. Maybe I should try calling but we all know how that goes.

•Adjudication issues are exactly the kind of thing where Claimyr really helps. Getting an agent to explain what's holding up your claim can speed things up a lot.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the info here. I was putting off refiling because I thought it would be super complicated but sounds like it's just filling out the forms again.
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Exactly! Don't overthink it. The hardest part is just getting started. Once you submit the application the process moves along.

•Going to do it today. Wish me luck!

One more tip - take screenshots or save confirmation numbers for everything when you refile. Washington ESD's system has been glitchy lately and having proof of what you submitted can save headaches later.

•Great advice! I learned that lesson the hard way with my first claim.

Kai Santiago
•Yes! Print or screenshot EVERYTHING. I keep a folder with all my unemployment paperwork just in case.

Does refiling reset the 26 week limit or do you get fewer weeks if you already used some?
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Refiling gives you a fresh 26 weeks assuming you have enough wage credits in your new base period. It's a completely new claim.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•That's a relief. I was worried I'd only get like 10 weeks or something.

I tried refiling online but kept getting error messages. Anyone know if you can refile over the phone or do you have to use the website?
0 coins
Ayla Kumar
•You can file over the phone but good luck getting through. The online system works better early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are using it.

•I'll try logging in early tomorrow morning. Thanks for the tip!

This whole thread has been super helpful. One last question - if I refile and get denied for some reason, can I appeal like with a regular claim?
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Yes, the appeal process is the same. You have 30 days from the denial notice to file an appeal. Same rights as any other unemployment claim.

Axel Bourke
•Good to know. Hopefully it won't come to that but nice to know I have options.

Update: Just submitted my refiled claim! Thanks everyone for the help. The process was way easier than I expected. Now I just have to wait for them to process it.
