EDD San Diego phone number - same as statewide or different line?

I keep seeing people mention an EDD San Diego phone number but when I call what I think is the local office I just get transferred to the main line anyway. Is there actually a dedicated San Diego EDD phone number that bypasses the usual 2+ hour hold times? I've been trying to reach someone for 3 weeks about my claim status and getting nowhere with the regular 800-300-5616 number. Live in Chula Vista and wondering if there's a regional office I should be calling instead.

There's no separate San Diego EDD phone number unfortunately. All unemployment calls go through the same statewide system regardless of where you live in California. The local offices don't handle phone calls anymore - everything is centralized.

That's what I was afraid of. So frustrating that they closed all the local phone support!

Yeah they consolidated everything during the pandemic and never went back to local phone support.

I'm in San Diego too and have been calling the main EDD number daily for 2 weeks. Got through exactly once and the call dropped after 90 minutes on hold. This system is broken.

0 coins

Same experience here! The dropped calls are the worst part - all that time wasted.

Right? I actually took time off work to sit on hold and then nothing. So maddening.

I was in the same boat last month calling 50+ times a day. Finally gave up and used Claimyr - got connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. Worth every penny when you're dealing with this mess.

Never heard of Claimyr - is that legit? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything.

Yeah it's a service that auto-dials EDD for you and calls you back when they get an agent on the line. Check out claimyr.com - saved me hours of manual dialing.

Can confirm Claimyr works. Used it twice when I couldn't get through manually. Usually connects within 30-40 minutes.

Pro tip for anyone still trying to call manually: Don't waste time calling between 12pm-1:30pm. The entire call center takes lunch and literally nobody answers during that window.

0 coins

Seriously? The WHOLE call center goes to lunch at once? That explains why I never get through around noon!

Yep, learned that the hard way after wasting countless attempts during lunch hours. Start calling again around 1:45pm.

I've had better luck calling Wednesday and Thursday afternoons around 2pm. Mondays are impossible and Friday afternoons they seem to stop taking calls early.

0 coins

Wednesday afternoons have worked for me too. Takes about 45-60 attempts but eventually get through to hold.

Exactly! And when you do get on hold, pray it doesn't drop. I'd say 40% of my held calls get disconnected.

For the menu shortcut use: 1-wait about 70 seconds-1-1-***. This gets you to the hold queue faster than waiting for all the prompts.

0 coins

How long do you wait after the first 1? I've been waiting the full prompts.

Felix Grigori

•

About 70 seconds, maybe a bit more. You'll hear background music, then you can punch in 1-1-***.

This shortcut saved me probably 30 seconds per call. When you're dialing 80+ times that adds up!

The 833-978-7653 number is the exact same line as 800-300-5616. Don't let anyone tell you one is better - it's the same system.

0 coins

Thank you for clarifying this! I kept switching between numbers thinking one might work better.

Common misconception. Save yourself the trouble and just stick with whichever number you remember easier.

Been calling since 8am (it's now 3pm) and have dialed 94 times. Got the 'too busy' message every single time. This is insane - how is this acceptable government service?

I feel your pain. Spent 6 hours yesterday calling and never even got on hold. Lost count after 120 attempts.

•

It's like they designed this system to make people give up. Completely broken.

0 coins

This is exactly why I switched to using Claimyr. My time is worth more than spending entire days redialling.

Start calling at 7:55am before they officially open. Sometimes you can get in the queue early. Make your coffee the night before so you're ready to dial right away.

0 coins

Smart strategy! I never thought about calling before 8am.

Yeah, those 5 minutes before opening can make the difference. Set multiple alarms!

Just to be clear for everyone - there is NO specialist line anymore. That was discontinued after the pandemic surge. Anyone telling you to dial different extensions is giving outdated info.

Good to know. I kept seeing old forum posts about specialist numbers that don't work anymore.

Leo Simmons

•

Exactly. Those posts are from 2020-2021. Now it's just the main line for everyone.

Update: Finally got through using Claimyr after reading about it here. Took 25 minutes to get the callback and the agent was super helpful. Wish I'd known about this weeks ago instead of wasting so much time manual dialing.

0 coins

That's awesome! I think I'm going to try it too. How much does it cost?

I think it was like $20 or something. Honestly worth it just for the time saved. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works.

Told you it works! Best money I've spent in months.

Don't call after 4pm on any day. They stop accepting new calls to the hold queue even though they're officially open until 5pm.

James Maki

This explains why I never have luck calling in late afternoon. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, learned that one the hard way. Best window is really 1:30pm-3:30pm.

0 coins

Been tracking my calls in a spreadsheet for 2 weeks. Best success rate: Wednesday 2-3pm (got on hold 3 out of 47 attempts). Worst: Monday mornings (0 out of 73 attempts).

You're way more organized than me! I just keep hitting redial until my thumb hurts.

0 coins

The data helps me stay sane. Otherwise it feels completely random and hopeless.

0 coins

My unlimited plan doesn't cover excessive calling so I'm getting charged extra for all these EDD attempts. This is costing me money just to try to reach them!

Arnav Bengali

Same problem here! My phone bill went up $30 last month from all the calling.

0 coins

It's ridiculous that we have to pay extra just to contact a government agency that owes us money.

Reality check: I've called over 500 times in the past month. Got on hold 4 times, spoke to an agent exactly once (for 3 minutes before they had to transfer me and the call dropped). The system is fundamentally broken.

Rachel Tao

•

500 times?! That's insane. How do you even have time for anything else?

Sayid Hassan

•

I don't. This has become my full-time job. Considering using one of those calling services just to get my life back.

Do it. I used Claimyr last week and actually got my issue resolved. First time talking to EDD in 2 months.
