EDD Money Network card declining at stores but works at ATMs - anyone else?

I've been having the weirdest issue with my EDD Money Network card for the past week. Every time I try to use it to buy groceries or at Target it gets declined, but when I go to an ATM I can withdraw cash no problem. I called the Money Network number on the back of the card twice and was told there are no blocks or holds on my account. My balance shows plenty of funds available in the app. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some setting I need to change or is the whole Money Network system glitching again? Really frustrating to stand in checkout lines just to have the card declined and then have to run to an ATM to get cash.

ya same thing was happening to me last month. so annoying! had to get cash from atm every time. call Money Network and specifically ask them to enable POS purchases. for some reason new cards sometimes have store purchases blocked but atm works. they fixed mine in like 2 minutes once i finally got thru to them

Thanks! I'll try calling again and specifically ask about POS purchases being enabled. The first two reps didn't mention anything like that. Did you have to wait on hold forever to get through?

This is a common issue with the Money Network cards. There are a few possible reasons: 1. Your PIN might not be working for POS (Point of Sale) transactions even though it works at ATMs 2. The merchant category code might be restricted on your card 3. The card might need to be activated specifically for retail purchases Call Money Network customer service at 1-866-320-8699 and specifically tell them you need to enable retail/POS transactions. When you're on the phone, also ask them to check if there are any merchant restrictions on your account. Sometimes they limit new cards to prevent fraud.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I didn't realize there were different settings for ATM vs retail purchases. Will call them tomorrow morning and specifically mention the POS transactions.

I actually tried both ways - as credit AND debit. Neither worked, but I'll try the credit option again after I call customer service to see if they can fix whatever setting is wrong.

THE WHOLE EDD MONEY NETWORK SYSTEM IS GARBAGE!!! I've had nothing but problems since they switched from BofA!!! My card randomly gets declined too, and when I call their customer service its ALWAYS at least an hour wait!!! And half the time they can't even fix the problem! I've started just withdrawing all my money as soon as it hits my card and putting it in my regular bank account. The Money Network app is also terrible and crashes constantly. I miss the old BofA cards that actually WORKED!!!

I understand your frustration with the Money Network cards. One thing that might help is to set up direct deposit instead of using the card. You can do this through your UI Online account under "Payment Preferences." That way you don't have to deal with the card system at all, and your benefits go straight to your regular bank account automatically.

actually i think i know whats happening. does ur card say visa or mastercard on it? my first card was visa and had tons of problems with declines. EDD sent me a replacement that was mastercard and it works everywhere now

Mine is a Visa! That's interesting - I didn't know they had different types. I'll ask about that when I call customer service tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

When I had this exact problem last year, I spent HOURS trying to get through to Money Network with no luck. After trying for days, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to help me reach an actual Money Network representative. They got me connected in about 20 mins when I couldn't get through for days on my own. The rep told me my card had a merchant restriction that needed to be removed. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It saved my sanity after dealing with this frustrating issue for over a week.

Thanks for the suggestion! If I can't get through tomorrow I might try this. It's ridiculous how hard it is to reach someone when there's a problem with our benefits.

Yeah, it's definitely activated since I can use it at the ATM to withdraw cash. Just won't work for purchases. So strange!

Here's what's likely happening: The Money Network cards have separate authorization systems for ATM withdrawals versus retail purchases. This is actually a security feature, not a bug. When you call customer service, specifically ask them to: 1. Verify your card is set up for POS/retail purchases 2. Check if there are any daily spending limits that might be lower than your ATM withdrawal limits 3. Confirm your card isn't set to "ATM only" mode Also, if you're having trouble reaching Money Network customer service, remember you can also contact EDD directly at 1-800-300-5616 and ask them to escalate the issue with Money Network on your behalf.

GOOD LUCK getting through to EDD on that number!!!! I've tried calling at least 50 times in the past month and NEVER got through to anyone!!! Either "too many callers" message or 3+ hour wait times. The whole system is designed to make it impossible to get help!!!

Thank you for this detailed explanation! I'll definitely ask about all three things when I call tomorrow. The "ATM only" mode might be exactly what's happening. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!

Just to follow up on this - I had a similar issue last month. After speaking with Money Network, I found out my card had a security flag on it because I had tried to use it at several different stores in one day (grocery shopping, Target, and gas station). The system flagged it as potential fraud and restricted retail purchases but left ATM access active. They removed the flag and it worked fine after that. It might be worth asking if there's a security flag on your account.

That makes a lot of sense! I did try to use it at multiple places on the same day when it first started declining. I'll specifically ask about security flags too. Thanks for sharing your experience!
