Can you get unemployment and food stamps at the same time in California?
So I've been on California EDD unemployment for about six weeks now and I'm really struggling to make ends meet. My weekly benefit amount doesn't even come close to covering my rent let alone groceries. My former coworker mentioned I might be able to apply for CalFresh (food stamps) at the same time as collecting UI benefits but I wasn't sure if receiving unemployment would disqualify me or count against me somehow. Has anyone here actually done both at the same time? I don't want to mess up my EDD claim by applying for something I'm not supposed to be getting simultaneously. Would really appreciate any info from people who have actually been through this situation.

Yes you absolutely can collect both California EDD unemployment benefits and CalFresh (that's what food stamps are called in California) at the same time. They are completely separate programs run by different agencies - EDD handles unemployment insurance while the county social services office handles CalFresh. Getting CalFresh does NOT affect your UI claim in any way. The only thing to know is that your unemployment benefit amount counts as income when CalFresh calculates how much food assistance you qualify for, so your weekly benefit amount will factor into their eligibility formula. But many people receiving UI still qualify for CalFresh especially if your benefit amount is on the lower end.

AuthorOh thank goodness, I was so worried about this. So when I apply for CalFresh do I just tell them I'm getting unemployment income?

StarSailor
Exactly right. When you fill out the CalFresh application you report your unemployment benefit as income. They'll calculate your household size, income, and expenses and tell you if you qualify and for how much. Go to benefitscal.org to apply online, it takes maybe 20-30 minutes.

Confirmed - I did exactly this last year when I got laid off from my warehouse job. Filed for California EDD right away and then applied for CalFresh about two weeks later once my UI payments started coming in. The county worker at my CalFresh interview specifically said unemployment counts as unearned income for their purposes. I ended up qualifying for about $180/month in CalFresh benefits even while getting my full UI weekly payment. The two programs don't interfere with each other at all.

Author$180 a month would make such a difference honestly. How long did it take for CalFresh to get approved after you applied?

My CalFresh was approved in about 10 days. They do a phone interview and then mail you an EBT card. Process was pretty smooth actually compared to dealing with EDD lol

I went through this exact situation a few months back and one thing that helped me a ton was getting my EDD claim sorted out quickly so I knew exactly what my weekly benefit amount would be before applying for CalFresh. I had trouble getting anyone on the phone at EDD for weeks. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it basically holds your place in the EDD phone queue so you don't have to sit on hold forever. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Once I actually talked to an EDD rep and got my benefit amount confirmed I was able to put the exact right income number on my CalFresh application. Made the whole thing go way smoother.

wait so this claimyr thing actually gets you through to a real EDD person?? I've been trying to call for 3 weeks straight

It worked for me, that's all I can say. Saved me a ton of frustration when I really needed answers about my claim amount before applying for other benefits

ok so I'm gonna push back a little here - technically yes you CAN get both but you should know that CalFresh eligibility in California has income limits. For a single person household the gross monthly income limit is around $2,265. If your UI weekly benefit is like $450/week that's roughly $1,950/month which is under the limit so you'd likely qualify. But if you have a higher weekly benefit amount you might not qualify or only get a small amount. Point is - apply anyway because the worst they can say is no and there's no penalty for applying and not qualifying.

Zainab Ibrahim
AuthorMy weekly benefit is only $320 so I think I should be under that limit. Good to know though

StarSailor
This is correct info. Income limits vary by household size too so a family of 4 has a much higher limit than a single person. Always worth applying to find out for sure.

Amina Sy
exactly, and people forget that CalFresh also has deductions for things like rent and utilities that can lower your countable income further so even if you're near the limit you might still qualify after deductions

NOBODY told me about this when I lost my job last year and I struggled for three months just on my UI benefits which barely covered half my bills!! I wish someone in the EDD process would just like... automatically tell you about CalFresh when you file for unemployment. The whole system is set up so you DON'T know about help that exists. Makes me so mad honestly. OP you are smart for asking, please apply for CalFresh as soon as possible don't wait like I did.

And then you finally figure it out and wonder how many other people are suffering not knowing. I eventually got $210/month in CalFresh and wished I'd applied from day one of being unemployed

just to add some practical info - when you apply for CalFresh they might ask you for proof of your unemployment benefits. You can get that from your UI Online account on the EDD website. There should be an option to print a benefit verification letter or you can show them your payment history. The county workers are usually pretty flexible about what documentation they accept so don't stress too much about that part.

Zainab Ibrahim
AuthorOh good tip, I wasn't sure what proof they'd need. I'll log into UI Online and look for that letter

QuantumQuest
Yeah it's under like account or payment info I think, been a while since I looked at it. You could also just show them your bank statements showing the EDD deposits if you can't find the letter

The benefit verification letter on UI Online is actually super easy to find, it's right in the main menu area when you log in

Does getting CalFresh affect your job search requirements for EDD though? Like do they have their own separate work search requirements or does one satisfy the other? I'm already doing my 3 job search activities per week for EDD and wondering if I'd have to do something extra for CalFresh.
0 coins
StarSailor
They are completely separate programs with separate requirements. CalFresh for able-bodied adults without dependents does have work requirements called ABAWD rules but California has largely suspended or expanded exemptions from those. Your EDD job search activities don't count toward CalFresh requirements and vice versa, but in most California counties right now the CalFresh work requirements aren't being heavily enforced. If you have kids or any disability you're likely exempt anyway.

Oh okay good to know, I was worried it would add more stuff to track and keep up with

This is one of those things that sounds complicated but in practice rarely comes up. The CalFresh workers focus way more on income and household size than work activities in my experience

went thru a really rough patch two years ago lost my job at the restaurant and had no idea what I was doing. applied for edd unemployment and eventually got it but the waiting and not knowing was the worst part. someone at a food bank told me about CalFresh and I got approved in like 2 weeks. combined with my UI it wasn't great money but it kept me from going completely under. now I'm back working but going through that experience taught me to always know what programs are available. there's also Medi-Cal if you don't have health insurance which you can get at the same time as EDD and CalFresh, just throwing that out there
0 coins
Zainab Ibrahim
AuthorOh wow I hadn't even thought about Medi-Cal, I actually lost my health insurance when I got laid off so that's really useful to know
0 coins
Javier Morales
Yeah Medi-Cal is also separate from EDD and CalFresh, apply through Covered California or benefitscal.org. With unemployment income only you will almost certainly qualify

this is real talk, the combination of EDD + CalFresh + Medi-Cal honestly kept me afloat when I was unemployed for 4 months, use every resource available

One more thing on the EDD side - make sure your weekly certifications are staying current and you're reporting everything correctly. If you're doing part-time work on the side or have any other income you need to report it accurately. I've seen people get into overpayment situations because they didn't understand what to report. Your CalFresh and EDD both need accurate income info. If you ever need to talk to an EDD agent about how to properly report income or anything about your claim status, I mentioned Claimyr earlier - really does cut through the phone queue nightmare at claimyr.com.

AuthorI'm not working at all right now so no other income to worry about, but good reminder about the weekly certifications

the weekly certifications stress me out every time even though ive done them for months, always scared I'll answer something wrong

Paolo Rizzo
I get that anxiety completely. If you're ever unsure about how to answer a certification question an EDD agent can walk you through it, that's worth a call to EDD for sure

random question but does having CalFresh affect your credit score at all? my cousin told me getting government assistance goes on some kind of record but that sounds made up to me
0 coins
StarSailor
Your cousin is misinformed. CalFresh (or any government assistance program) does NOT appear on your credit report and has zero impact on your credit score. Benefits programs are completely separate from credit reporting systems. The only thing that could potentially matter is if you ever apply for certain immigration statuses, but for US citizens and permanent residents there's no issue at all.

Emma Davis
ok good I thought that sounded wrong lol thanks for clarifying

Yeah this is a common myth that unfortunately scares people away from benefits they're entitled to. Please ignore that misinformation

Can I ask a related question - if you're on EDD unemployment and you also pick up a few hours of gig work here and there, does that affect CalFresh too? Like if I do some DoorDash on a slow week does that mess up my CalFresh amount or do I have to report it?
0 coins
StarSailor
Yes you need to report gig/self-employment income to both EDD and CalFresh. For EDD you report any earnings when you certify for that week, and gig work earnings reduce your UI benefit for that week. For CalFresh you report income changes to your county worker, typically within 10 days of a change. Your CalFresh amount may adjust based on the additional income. Transparency with both programs is really important to avoid overpayment issues down the road.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
Ugh that seems complicated to track. So every week with DoorDash income I need to report different amounts to two different agencies?
0 coins
StarSailor
Basically yes. EDD is week by week on your certification. CalFresh is more of a monthly income reporting situation. It's worth keeping a simple log of your gig earnings so you have accurate numbers for both programs.

Yara Sabbagh
I did exactly this with rideshare driving while on EDD. It's a bit of paperwork but totally doable. The alternative - not reporting and getting hit with an overpayment demand from EDD or CalFresh - is so much worse
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
How long can you receive both programs simultaneously? Like does one have a time limit that would cut off before the other?
0 coins
QuantumQuest
California EDD regular unemployment insurance lasts up to 26 weeks. CalFresh has no strict time limit as long as you continue to meet the income and eligibility requirements, you recertify every 6-12 months. So it's possible to exhaust your UI benefits and still remain on CalFresh if your income stays low enough, like if you find part-time work but not enough to exceed CalFresh income limits.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
Oh interesting so CalFresh could potentially continue even after EDD runs out
0 coins
QuantumQuest
Exactly. Lots of people transition from EDD + CalFresh to just CalFresh while they're still job searching or in part-time work situations

honestly the hardest part for me wasn't even the paperwork it was getting questions answered by EDD when something seemed off with my claim. I spent like 3 weeks trying to get through on the phone and kept getting disconnected or the line would just say too busy and hang up on me. finally tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned in a thread like this one and got through to an actual EDD agent within a couple hours. they cleared up a question about how my part time earnings were being calculated that was stressing me out for weeks. claimyr.com for anyone stuck in that phone call nightmare

also just want to say - don't feel embarrassed or weird about using CalFresh while on unemployment. you paid into the UI system and CalFresh exists specifically for situations like this. I see people in these forums sometimes acting like using assistance programs is something to be ashamed of and it's really not. the programs exist to help people through hard times and that's exactly what you're going through
0 coins
Zainab Ibrahim
AuthorThank you for saying this, I'll admit I did feel a little weird about it at first

Super common feeling but completely unnecessary. These programs have no downside for using them when you qualify.

100% this. There is zero shame in using systems you've already contributed to through taxes. Take care of yourself first.

Something practical nobody mentioned yet - when you apply for CalFresh online at benefitscal.org you can actually apply for Medi-Cal and CalWORKs (if you have kids) all at the same time in the same application. Saves a ton of time versus applying separately. The system will tell you which programs you might qualify for based on your answers. For someone unemployed and getting EDD benefits, definitely worth doing the full application to see everything you might be eligible for.
0 coins
Zainab Ibrahim
AuthorI didn't know it was all in one application, that's really convenient
0 coins
Amina Sy
Yeah benefitscal.org is actually pretty well designed for this. Takes like 30-40 minutes if you have your income info handy but you can save and come back to it
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
I did this when I lost my job last time and got CalFresh and Medi-Cal approved at the same time, the combined application is definitely the way to go
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
One thing to watch for - if you get a job and your income goes up, remember to report the change to BOTH EDD and CalFresh promptly. EDD you handle through your weekly certification, CalFresh you need to contact your county worker. Failing to report income changes in a timely way can result in overpayments that you have to pay back which is a huge headache. I learned this lesson the hard way with a different benefit program years ago and it was not fun sorting out.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
This is really important advice, I feel like overpayment situations are so stressful and avoidable if you just report things correctly
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
Exactly, the stress of an overpayment demand is so much worse than just being on top of reporting. Set a calendar reminder or whatever works for you
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
Do you have to report to CalFresh right away or is there like a grace period when you start a new job?
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
Generally you're supposed to report within 10 days of a change in income or employment status. Don't wait until your next recertification if something changes significantly.

UPDATE for anyone who finds this thread later: I applied for CalFresh at benefitscal.org two days after posting this question. The application was straightforward, had a phone interview three days later, and just got approved for $195/month in CalFresh benefits while I continue receiving my EDD unemployment payments. Everything people said in this thread was accurate - they are completely separate programs, unemployment counts as income but didn't disqualify me, and there's no impact on my EDD claim. If you're on unemployment and struggling with food costs, 100% apply. Thank you to everyone who helped in this thread!
