Can you get food stamps while on unemployment in California EDD?
So I've been collecting unemployment for about two months now and my weekly benefit amount is around $380. I'm a single person living alone and honestly that's barely covering my rent let alone groceries. My friend mentioned I might still qualify for CalFresh (food stamps) even while receiving unemployment benefits. I wasn't sure if getting UI payments would automatically disqualify me or if there's some income threshold thing. Has anyone actually applied for CalFresh while still on unemployment? Does your weekly benefit amount count as income when they calculate eligibility? I really need to know before I go through the whole application process and waste time if I'm just going to get denied.

Yes you can absolutely apply for CalFresh while receiving unemployment benefits. Your UI payments count as unearned income when they calculate your eligibility, but depending on your household size and the amount of your weekly benefit, you might still qualify. For a single person household in California the gross monthly income limit is around $1,580 which is roughly $19,000 per year. If your weekly benefit is $380 that's about $1,647 a month which puts you just over the gross limit for a single person household, BUT there are deductions they apply like shelter costs and utilities that can bring your net income down enough to qualify. Definitely worth applying through BenefitsCal.

AuthorWait so they look at gross income and net income separately? I didn't realize there were deductions involved. My rent is $1,400 a month so that shelter deduction might actually help me qualify.

This is really good info, I had no idea there were deductions that could help. I assumed if your UI was over the limit you were just automatically out.

Yeah the shelter deduction is huge for people in California because rent is so expensive. That deduction alone can make a lot of people eligible who otherwise wouldn't be based on gross income alone.

i applied for CalFresh while on unemployment last year and got approved. they approved me for like $112 a month which isnt a ton but it helps. just go to benefitscal.com and start the application there, takes maybe 30-40 mins

Author$112 is still something honestly. Did they ask for documentation of your UI payments or did they just pull that from state records somehow?

they asked me to upload my UI award letter from the EDD portal, i just took a screenshot of my benefit details page and uploaded it and that was enough

I went through this exact situation six months ago. One thing that tripped me up was trying to call EDD to get clarification on how my UI income would be reported to CalFresh. Spent literally hours trying to get through to someone. Eventually a coworker told me about Claimyr, it's a service that holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. Used it through claimyr.com and actually got through to an EDD rep within a couple hours instead of the usual all-day redial nightmare. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see before trying it. The agent confirmed my UI payments would be counted as unearned income for CalFresh purposes which helped me fill out my application correctly.

AuthorI've been having the same problem trying to get through to EDD about stuff like this. Might check out that Claimyr service, the phone situation is genuinely awful.

I've heard of that service, did it actually work for you? I'm always skeptical of stuff like that

Yeah it worked for me. I was skeptical too but at that point I'd been trying to call for three days straight and getting the high call volume message every single time. Got a callback and talked to an actual person which answered all my questions.

ugh the EDD phone system is the WORST. good to know there are alternatives

Something worth knowing - CalFresh and EDD are completely separate agencies (CDSS vs EDD) so getting approved for one has zero effect on the other. Your unemployment claim won't be impacted at all by applying for CalFresh. A lot of people worry about this for some reason like EDD will somehow penalize them for using other assistance programs but that's not how it works at all.

Omg I was literally worried about exactly this. Thank you for clarifying. I thought applying for CalFresh might flag my unemployment account somehow.

Malik Thomas
Nope completely separate systems. The only connection is that your UI income gets reported to CalFresh for their income calculation, but EDD itself doesn't even know you applied for CalFresh.

For anyone reading this thread - here's a quick breakdown of how CalFresh handles UI income: Your weekly UI benefit amount gets multiplied by 4.33 to get your monthly income figure. So $380/week = $1,645/month counted as unearned income. From there they apply deductions: - 20% earned income deduction (doesn't apply to UI since it's unearned) - Standard deduction ($198 for 1-2 person households in 2025) - Excess shelter deduction (if your rent+utilities exceeds 50% of your net income after other deductions) For someone in a high-rent area of California with $1,400 rent and $380/week UI, the numbers often still work out to CalFresh eligibility. Use the BenefitsCal pre-screening tool before doing the full application to get an estimate.

AuthorThis breakdown is exactly what I needed. So the standard deduction comes off first then they look at shelter costs? I'm going to run through the pre-screening tool tonight.

Good breakdown. One addition - if you have any medical expenses over $35/month (for elderly or disabled household members) there's an additional medical deduction. Not relevant for most people but worth knowing.

Do they count the full weekly benefit or is it after taxes? I have 10% withheld from my UI for federal taxes
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
To answer the tax withholding question - CalFresh counts your gross UI benefit before any voluntary tax withholding. So if your benefit is $380 and you have 10% federal withholding, they still count $380 not $342. Just something to be aware of when you estimate your eligibility.

GalacticGladiator
Ugh that's annoying but good to know. Thanks for clarifying

Amina Diop
wait that seems unfair if the money is already being withheld and you never see it
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
I know it seems that way but the logic is that it's voluntary withholding you chose to set up, similar to how they'd count wages before voluntary deductions. The tax withholding from UI is optional so it's treated as if you have access to that money.

I applied for CalFresh when I first got laid off and was waiting for my UI claim to process. At the time I had zero income so I got approved for the maximum benefit. Then once my UI kicked in they reduced my CalFresh amount. It didn't stop completely though which surprised me. I thought UI would disqualify me entirely but I still got like $90 a month which covered most of my basic grocery needs.

Keisha Jackson
AuthorThat's actually a really practical way to think about it - even if it reduces it doesn't necessarily eliminate it. Every bit helps when you're between jobs.

Omar Zaki
Exactly. And the application process for reducing benefits when your income changes is pretty straightforward, they just ask you to report the change through BenefitsCal.

DONT FORGET that you still have to do your job search activities and certify your weekly claims with EDD even while applying for CalFresh. I know this seems obvious but I got so wrapped up in the CalFresh application stuff one week that I almost forgot to certify on time. Those are two completely separate obligations.
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
AuthorOh gosh good reminder. I've been so stressed about the food situation I can almost imagine losing track of my certification deadline.
0 coins
Emma Wilson
This happened to my sister, she missed a week of certification because she was dealing with other stuff and lost that week's benefits. EDD doesn't give you a lot of grace on that deadline.
0 coins
Chloe Taylor
Yeah EDD will not cut you any slack on certification timing. Set a phone alarm for your certification window every single week.

One more practical tip - when you fill out the CalFresh application on BenefitsCal, under income sources make sure you categorize your UI payments correctly. There's a section for 'other income' where unemployment benefits go. I've heard of people accidentally putting it under 'self employment' or leaving it off entirely and then having issues later. Put it in the right category from the start and your caseworker will have an easier time processing your application.
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
AuthorThank you for this, I would have probably clicked on the wrong category. Is there a label that says specifically unemployment insurance or is it just 'government benefits' type of thing?
0 coins
Oliver Weber
It should have an option specifically for unemployment benefits or unemployment insurance. BenefitsCal has gotten more specific with their dropdowns in recent updates so it should be pretty clear. If you're unsure their online chat support is actually pretty responsive.

Natasha Romanova
yeah i remember seeing a specific unemployment option when i applied, it wasnt buried or anything

For anyone struggling to get questions answered by EDD directly - whether it's about how your UI income affects CalFresh eligibility or any other claim questions - the Claimyr callback service at claimyr.com really did save me hours of frustration. The regular EDD phone lines are genuinely impossible during peak hours. Being able to get an actual agent on the phone made a huge difference in getting accurate answers instead of guessing from forum posts (no offense to this thread, you all have been great).

Does Claimyr work for like general questions or only for specific claim issues?
0 coins
NebulaNinja
From my experience the agent I reached could answer general policy questions too, not just specific claim problems. They're just regular EDD phone agents so whatever you'd normally ask them.

I've used it for a status check and it worked fine. The key thing is you actually talk to a real EDD employee, not a Claimyr rep, so you get actual official information.

does anyone know if CalFresh affects your ability to get other assistance? like im also trying to apply for help with my utilities through LIHEAP and im not sure if having CalFresh would cause issues
0 coins
Paolo Moretti
LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance) and CalFresh are actually linked in a good way - if you're already receiving CalFresh you're often automatically income-qualified for LIHEAP without having to reprove your income. It's called categorical eligibility. So having CalFresh can actually make the LIHEAP process easier.

Freya Larsen
Oh wow that's the opposite of what I was worried about. I thought having one program would somehow disqualify me from another.
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Yeah the system is designed to coordinate benefits, not have them block each other. Getting CalFresh can open doors to other assistance rather than close them.
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
okay real talk - I was embarrassed to apply for CalFresh because I felt like I was taking resources meant for people worse off than me. But my therapist basically told me these programs exist for exactly this situation and you paid into the system when you were working so there's no reason to feel bad. Just putting that out there in case anyone else is wrestling with that feeling.

Keisha Jackson
AuthorThank you for saying this. I've had this exact feeling and it's been part of why I've been dragging my feet on applying.

Isabella Oliveira
I get it. But honestly the eligibility rules exist for a reason and if you qualify you qualify. That's not charity that's a program functioning as designed.

Same, I felt weird about it at first too. But CalFresh especially is a program that's meant to bridge exactly these gaps. There's nothing to feel guilty about.

I think I read somewhere that if you're on unemployment you don't qualify for CalFresh... is that actually wrong? Because this whole thread is telling me something different
0 coins
Paolo Moretti
That's a myth that gets passed around a lot. UI income is treated as unearned income for CalFresh purposes but it doesn't automatically disqualify you. The income limits and deductions determine eligibility, not the source of income itself.
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Definitely a misconception. The confusion probably comes from the fact that if someone's UI benefit is high enough they might exceed the income limit anyway, so people assume UI = automatic disqualification when really it's just an income question.
0 coins
Amina Diop
Oh okay that makes way more sense. I've been telling people the wrong thing this whole time lol

GalacticGladiator
Also worth noting - if you live with other people, like roommates, the CalFresh household definition is important. Roommates who don't buy and prepare food together with you typically aren't counted as part of your household for CalFresh purposes. So it could be just you and your income even if you technically share an address.
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
AuthorI do have a roommate but we definitely buy our own food separately. Good to know that shouldn't affect my application.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
This is correct. The household definition for CalFresh is about who you customarily purchase and prepare food WITH, not just who you live with. Separate grocery situation = separate household for CalFresh.

JUST APPLY. Seriously everyone in this situation should just go to benefitscal.com and start the application. The pre-screener takes like 5 minutes and tells you if it's worth continuing. Stop overthinking it like I did for three months and just see if you qualify. Worst they can say is no.

AuthorThis is the push I needed honestly. Going to do the pre-screener tonight.

Update question for OP - did you end up applying? Curious how the pre-screener came out for your situation since it sounds like you might be right on the edge of the income limit.

Keisha Jackson
AuthorI did the pre-screener last night! It said I likely qualify for about $87/month after accounting for my shelter costs. Not a ton but I'm submitting the full application this week. Thanks everyone in this thread, you all gave me the info and confidence to actually go through with it.

One last thing I want to add since I work in social services adjacent field - there's a program called the Standard Utility Allowance (SUA) that gets applied to your CalFresh calculation if you pay for utilities. You don't have to prove your actual utility costs, they just apply a standard amount which for most California households is a substantial deduction. This can push people over the eligibility line who wouldn't qualify based on rent alone. Make sure when you fill out the CalFresh application you indicate that you pay utilities separately, even if they're included in a shared bill situation the caseworker can help you figure out what applies.
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Really important add. The SUA in California is pretty significant - I believe it's around $547/month for the full SUA (if you pay heating/cooling costs). That deduction alone can make a substantial difference in the net income calculation.

AuthorI do pay my own electric and gas so this should apply to me. Really glad this thread got so detailed, I feel way more prepared going into the application.
