27 weeks with ZERO movement on EDD appeal - class action lawsuit material?

Just hit the 27-week mark waiting for my appeal to be processed. TWENTY-SEVEN WEEKS! That's more than half a year of absolute silence from EDD. And this doesn't even include the 5 weeks I waited after submitting my initial claim before I got the disqualification notice that I'm now appealing. I check my UI Online account daily - no updates, no status changes, nothing. I've called literally hundreds of times and either can't get through or get transferred to someone who can't help. My rent is 3 months behind, my credit is destroyed, and I'm living off family loans at this point. How is this even legal? Has anyone successfully moved their appeal forward after this long? At what point do we organize a class action lawsuit against EDD for this ridiculous negligence? I'm genuinely curious if anyone has heard of legal action being taken because this feels criminal at this point.

For an expedited hearing request, you need to send a written request directly to the Office of Appeals where your case is assigned. Include your appeal case number, your name, the last 4 of your SSN, and detailed explanation of your hardship with supporting documentation. If you're not sure which office has your appeal, call the main Appeals Board number at 1-800-300-5616 and ask them to confirm where your case is assigned. Regarding getting through to EDD - I've had success calling exactly at 8:01am when they open and using the 1-2-4 prompt sequence. You'll still wait on hold, but at least you'll be in the queue. Keep trying the Claimyr service mentioned above too - having a tier 2 rep flag your case can make a difference. Don't give up - the system is frustrating by design, but persistence pays off. I waited 18 weeks for my appeal last year, but eventually won and received full backpay.

Thank you so much for the detailed instructions. I'm going to call the Appeals Board tomorrow morning and then submit my expedite request with all my hardship documentation. I'll try the 1-2-4 prompt sequence too. After spinning my wheels for months, it feels good to have some concrete steps to take.

hey just fyi when i won my appeal i had to call constantly for a month to get them to actually process my payments, the decision doesnt automatically trigger payment. so once you get thru all this bs be ready for more bs lol

EDD benefits exhausted at 58 - Healthcare industry job search feels impossible

Just received my final UI payment this morning and I'm feeling completely lost. I was laid off from my healthcare admin position after 17 years when our rural clinic was acquired, and at 58, the job market feels like it's completely closed to me. I've applied to 87 positions in the last 4 months and had exactly 3 interviews that went nowhere. My benefit year expires in 3 weeks. I've been stretching every dollar (thankfully my mortgage is almost paid off), but without the bi-weekly EDD payments, I don't know how I'll manage. My savings will only last another 2-3 months at most. Has anyone else here gone through benefit exhaustion and successfully found work in healthcare admin after 55? Or should I just give up and try to find part-time retail work until I can claim Social Security? The whole EDD experience has been a nightmare from day one - even my daughter who works for the state DMV says EDD is known as the most dysfunctional agency in California.

One more suggestion that might help - have you checked AARP's job board? They partner with employers who specifically want to hire experienced workers over 50. I know several people who found decent jobs through their program after being in similar situations. Their job board is at jobs.aarp.org and they also offer free resume reviews for members. Also, I know it's hard to hear this when you're worried about paying bills, but sometimes a short break before jumping into the next job can be valuable. If your finances allow even a small cushion, consider taking a few weeks to update skills, get certifications, or network. Many employers in healthcare admin now want experience with specific EMR systems or patient portal management.

I wasn't aware of AARP's job board - that's incredibly helpful! I'll check it out today. You're right about the EMR systems too. My last clinic used an outdated version of Epic, and I notice many job postings specifically want experience with newer systems or with Cerner.

Just an update on what I mentioned earlier - I remembered that California has a program specifically for older workers called the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). You have to be 55+ and meet certain income guidelines, but they help place you in paid training positions that can lead to permanent jobs. Here's the website: https://aging.ca.gov/Programs_and_Services/Senior_Community_Service_Employment_Program/ Might be worth checking if you qualify. Even if you don't, your local American Job Center (part of the CareerOneStop network) offers free services and some have specialists who work with older job seekers.

Thank you SO much for this information! I had no idea this program existed. Looking at the income guidelines, I would qualify now that my UI has ended. This gives me some hope for the first time in weeks. I'm going to contact them tomorrow.

EDD payments switched from Money Network card to paper checks? Need help NOW

Hi everyone. My identity was stolen last month and someone tried to access my Money Network card. I froze the card immediately, but now I'm paranoid about electronic payments in general. I want to completely switch my EDD unemployment benefits from electronic payments (Money Network) to paper checks sent through regular mail. I know it sounds old school, but I'd rather have the security. I've been looking all over UI Online and can't find this option anywhere! When I called EDD, I got the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and got disconnected. Does anyone know the specific steps to request paper checks instead of the card? I still have 4 months left on my claim and don't want any payment interruptions.

Before you make this change, let me offer some guidance about the EDD paper check process: 1. Paper checks typically arrive 3-5 business days after your payment is processed (compared to same-day delivery with Money Network) 2. You'll need to physically deposit or cash each check, which means potential bank holds on funds 3. If a check is lost in the mail, the replacement process takes 7-10 business days minimum 4. You'll still need to certify online through UI Online even if receiving paper checks Have you considered just requesting a brand new Money Network card instead? That would give you the security of a fresh card while maintaining the speed of electronic payments. You can request a replacement through Money Network directly without dealing with EDD.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. I didn't realize the replacement process would take so long if a check gets lost. I did get a new Money Network card already, but someone definitely had my personal information (they knew details about me), so I'm still concerned about electronic access. Maybe I should just keep the new card and set up text alerts for any transaction?

Setting up text alerts is an excellent compromise! You can also enable additional security features with Money Network: - Turn on two-factor authentication on the Money Network app - Set a daily ATM and purchase limit - Disable online purchasing if you don't need it - Set up account alerts for any transaction over $1 These security measures give you immediate notification of any suspicious activity while maintaining the convenience of electronic payments. Much better than waiting for paper checks that could be delayed or lost.

Update: I managed to get through to EDD this morning after calling literally 23 times! The rep told me paper checks are now being phased out and they're strongly encouraging everyone to use the Money Network card OR direct deposit to a bank account (which is a newer option). I went with direct deposit to my credit union account since they have good fraud protection. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!

Excellent choice! Direct deposit to your own bank account gives you the best combination of security and convenience. Your credit union's fraud protection will provide better security than either the Money Network card or paper checks. Glad you were able to get through and resolve this!

wow 23 calls??? that's actually not bad lol. took me 50+ tries last time i needed to talk to someone there

Part-time workers qualifying for EDD benefits - need current contact number

Hi everyone, I recently had my hours cut at the restaurant where I work. I'm down to like 15-20 hours a week from full-time and struggling to pay rent. Can I apply for partial unemployment benefits while still working part-time? And does anyone have the current EDD phone number? I tried calling what I thought was their number but kept getting transferred to different departments. Any advice would be super helpful because I'm getting desperate with bills piling up!

To answer your question about tips - yes, you absolutely must report ALL earnings including tips when certifying for UI benefits. EDD considers tips as income and failing to report them can result in an overpayment determination later, which you'd have to pay back. Regarding your employer, yes, EDD will verify your employment and reduction in hours with them. They'll send what's called a "Notice of Unemployment Insurance Claim Filed" to your employer. If your employer incorrectly states you requested reduced hours, you should appeal immediately and provide any evidence you have (emails, schedule changes, etc.) showing the reduction wasn't voluntary.

Got it, thank you! I'll start gathering some emails where I asked for more shifts as evidence just in case. Really appreciate all the detailed help.

One more important thing: when you first apply, you'll need to complete work search activities each week to remain eligible. For part-time workers, you still need to be looking for additional work. You can satisfy this by: 1. Applying for additional jobs or more hours at your current job 2. Registering with CalJOBS 3. Attending job fairs Make sure to keep a record of all your work search activities in case EDD requests proof later. When certifying, there will be questions specifically about your work search efforts.

Thanks for the reminder! I'll start keeping track of all the places I apply to. I'm definitely looking for a second part-time job anyway so that works out.

Need urgent help with EDD claim - where to find Congressperson assistance link?

I'm at my wit's end with this EDD mess! Been stuck in pending for over 8 weeks with zero income. Keep calling 300+ times a day and can't get through. Someone at the food bank told me our local Congressperson's office can help push EDD claims through, but I can't find the right website or contact form. Does anyone have the direct link for requesting congressional help with CA unemployment claims? My landlord is threatening eviction and I'm desperate. TIA!

I got help from my assembly member NOT congress person. Much better results with state-level reps for state EDD issues. Google "California find my assembly member" - they have EDD specialists on staff.

Oh that's interesting! I didn't realize there was a difference. I'll try both and see who responds first. Thanks for the tip!

If you're facing eviction, please also reach out to legal aid in your county immediately. They can help with both the eviction and potentially your EDD issues. Most have free services for people with housing insecurity. Just Google "[your county] legal aid housing" to find them.

That's a good idea. Hopefully the congressperson will help get my EDD fixed before it gets to that point, but I'll look into legal aid too just in case. Thank you!
