EDD benefits exhausted at 58 - Healthcare industry job search feels impossible

Just received my final UI payment this morning and I'm feeling completely lost. I was laid off from my healthcare admin position after 17 years when our rural clinic was acquired, and at 58, the job market feels like it's completely closed to me. I've applied to 87 positions in the last 4 months and had exactly 3 interviews that went nowhere. My benefit year expires in 3 weeks. I've been stretching every dollar (thankfully my mortgage is almost paid off), but without the bi-weekly EDD payments, I don't know how I'll manage. My savings will only last another 2-3 months at most. Has anyone else here gone through benefit exhaustion and successfully found work in healthcare admin after 55? Or should I just give up and try to find part-time retail work until I can claim Social Security? The whole EDD experience has been a nightmare from day one - even my daughter who works for the state DMV says EDD is known as the most dysfunctional agency in California.

I'm 61 and was in a similar situation last year after my hospital downsized. What I did was pivot to remote medical billing work which has less age discrimination. Check out connectRN, Codify Health, and Ensemble Health Partners - they're always hiring experienced medical admin people for remote positions, and they don't care as much about age. I got my job after my benefits ran out too. Also, have you checked if you qualify for FED-ED extension? Sometimes when regular UI runs out there are extensions available depending on unemployment rates in your county. Check your UI Online account or call EDD (good luck with that though, took me 38 calls to get through).

Thank you for the company suggestions! I haven't heard of those specific ones. I'll check them out right away. As for extensions, I did ask about that during my last phone call with EDD (waited 2.5 hours!) and they said FED-ED isn't currently active in California. The rep mentioned something about state unemployment rates needing to hit certain thresholds for extensions to trigger.

dont give up! my mom is 59 and got laid off from nursing admin job and thought shed never work again. took 6 months but she found something. u need to update ur linkedin and resume tho, make sure ur using all the new keywords they look for. also try tempt agencies that specialize in medical admin.

When you say "final UI check," have you confirmed you've actually exhausted your maximum benefit amount? Sometimes people think they're done, but they might be eligible for a different claim type. Did your UI Online account specifically show $0.00 remaining benefit balance? Also, check if you're eligible for SDI if you have any health conditions - completely separate program with separate funds!

Yes, unfortunately my UI Online account shows $0.00 remaining balance and has a bright red "Maximum Benefits Paid" notice on the homepage. I did look into SDI but don't have any qualifying health conditions. I've used every penny of the $19,700 claim amount they initially approved.

The same thing happened to me and I was FREAKING OUT but then I found contract work through LinkedIN. Have you tried looking for 6-month contract positions? Sometimes those are easier to get and then they lead to permanent jobs if they like you. The job search at our age is THE WORST and I feel your pain!!!

Contract work is a good idea - at this point I'd take anything that utilizes my skills. Were there specific search terms you used on LinkedIn to find contract positions? When I search, I mostly see full-time permanent roles.

Not sure if this will help your situation, but I had a horrible time reaching EDD when my benefits were about to run out and I needed to ask about extensions. Someone here recommended a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes instead of calling for days. Worth it for me because I found out I was eligible for a different type of claim I didn't know about.

Yeah it actually worked for me - not instant but way better than doing it myself. I think I waited like 22 minutes instead of calling for days and getting nowhere. The rep I talked to was super helpful too, might have just been lucky tho.

I sold my car and bought something much cheaper, canceled all subscriptions, and moved in with my sister temporarily. It's humiliating at my age, but what choice do we have? I'm taking a medical coding certification course online that will hopefully make me more marketable. I wasn't aware of AARP's job board - that's incredibly helpful! I'll check it out today. You're right about the EMR systems too. My last clinic used an outdated version of Epic, and I notice many job postings specifically want experience with newer systems or with Cerner.

Just an update on what I mentioned earlier - I remembered that California has a program specifically for older workers called the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). You have to be 55+ and meet certain income guidelines, but they help place you in paid training positions that can lead to permanent jobs.
