I'm at my wits' end trying to reach EDD about my claim status. Been attempting to call for SIX WEEKS straight using the main 800 number. Either get the dreaded 'we're experiencing high call volume' message or wait on hold for 2+ hours only to get disconnected. My claim shows 'pending' and rent is due next week. Does anyone have direct numbers to actual EDD representatives who can help? I've tried calling at different times (early morning, late afternoon) but nothing works. Starting to think they don't actually want to help people get their benefits. Any working numbers or extensions would be appreciated!
I was in a car accident back in December and just received a settlement payment of $8,500 from the insurance company. I've been on regular UI benefits since January after losing my warehouse job, and I'm worried about whether I need to report this money during my bi-weekly certification. It's not exactly income from work, right? But I don't want to get hit with an overpayment notice or fraud penalties if I'm supposed to report it. Has anyone dealt with settlement money while on unemployment? Do I need to tell EDD about this payment?
Thanks for updating us with the official answer from EDD! This is really helpful for future reference. It's good to know they confirmed that settlements for medical expenses and property damage don't need to be reported - only portions specifically designated as lost wages would count. This thread will be useful for others who find themselves in similar situations. Glad you were able to get through to them and get peace of mind!
This thread has been incredibly informative! I'm currently dealing with a potential settlement from a workplace injury (not workers comp since it was a third-party liability issue) and was really worried about how it might affect my UI benefits. Reading through everyone's experiences and seeing the official confirmation from EDD really helps clarify things. It sounds like the key is whether any portion of the settlement is specifically designated as compensation for lost wages versus medical expenses, pain and suffering, or property damage. I'll definitely review my settlement documents carefully when they arrive and consider using that Claimyr service if I need to speak with an EDD rep directly. Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge and experiences here - this kind of peer support is invaluable when dealing with these confusing situations!
This is exactly the kind of situation where having clear guidance makes all the difference! Workplace injury settlements involving third-party liability can be especially tricky since they're not traditional workers comp. You're smart to wait and carefully review the settlement breakdown when it comes. From what I've learned reading this thread, the critical thing is looking for any language about "lost wages," "income replacement," or "loss of earnings" - those would be the red flags for reportable income. Everything else (medical bills, pain/suffering, etc.) should be in the clear. The Claimyr service that several people mentioned seems like a solid backup plan if you need official confirmation. It's amazing how much anxiety these situations can cause when you're already dealing with unemployment stress!
Hey everyone, I just got a letter saying I need to provide more info for my claim to be approved. Has anyone else dealt with this? What kind of additional stuff did they ask for? I'm kinda worried about messing this up and having my claim denied. Any advice would be super helpful!
Quick tip: if you have a smartphone, download a scanner app. You can scan all your docs and save them as PDFs. Makes it way easier to keep track of everything and submit online if that's an option.
Anyone else feel like they're playing a game of bureaucratic bingo? ๐ I swear, every time I think I'm done, BAM! Another form or document needed. At this point, I'm convinced they'll ask for a lock of my hair and my first-born child next.
Finally got some good news after fighting with EDD for months! The administrative law judge ruled in my favor at my appeal hearing last week and specifically ordered that EDD must refund the $2,750 I've been paying back through their repayment plan since January. The decision paperwork says I'm eligible for benefits and the overpayment was their error, not mine. But now what? The judge ordered the refund, but the paperwork doesn't say anything about how or when I'll actually get my money back. Do I need to call EDD? Submit a form? Or just wait? Has anyone gone through this process before and know how long it typically takes for them to process refunds after an appeal decision? I'm worried they'll just ignore it unless I keep bugging them.
Quick question - did your judge actually specify the refund amount in the decision? My judge just said I was eligible for benefits but didn't mention anything about a refund specifically. Still waiting to see what happens...
Yes, my decision specifically stated that the $2,750 I had repaid should be refunded to me. The judge wrote that the overpayment was due to an EDD error and not my fault. Maybe that's why it was included in my decision? Did you already pay back any money before your appeal?
Just an update that might help others - I checked with a friend who works at EDD (not giving specific advice, just general info). She said that refunds after favorable appeal decisions are taking longer than usual right now because of a recent system update. The current processing time is closer to 20-25 business days rather than the usual 10-15. Also, for anyone in this situation, make sure your address is current in the UI Online system because sometimes they mail a check instead of using your card, especially if the original overpayment was collected more than 6 months ago.
Has anyone else tried calling EDD this week? I've been trying to reach them about my pending claim (going on 3 weeks now) and when I called the regular 800 number, I got this weird recording saying the number changed, then it tried to direct me to some "win $100" sweepstakes line. Definitely seems like a scam! I double-checked the number from my paperwork and the EDD website but I'm getting the same result. Did EDD actually change their phone numbers? If so, what's the new one? Or is my phone somehow connecting to the wrong place? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my claim before rent is due next week!
I've been having similar issues with EDD phone lines lately! What's worked for me is calling from a landline instead of my cell phone - sometimes mobile carriers have routing issues that can redirect you to weird places. Also, if you're still having trouble, try calling the 1-866-333-4606 number first (the automated line) and then transfer to speak with a representative from there. The automated system sometimes has better connection stability. Hope this helps and you get through soon!
I work at a phone company and can explain what might be happening! Sometimes scammers buy phone numbers that are very similar to legitimate government numbers (like changing one digit) and set up auto-dialers to catch people who misdial. They also sometimes hack into phone routing systems to redirect calls. If you're absolutely sure you're dialing the right number, try these steps: 1) Clear your phone's call history and contacts to make sure you're not auto-dialing a saved wrong number, 2) Try calling from a completely different phone/carrier, 3) Write the number down fresh from the EDD website rather than using saved contacts. Also, EDD usually posts service alerts on their website if there are known phone issues, so check ca.gov/edd for any announcements. Stay safe out there!
Wow, this is super helpful info from someone who actually works in the industry! The scammer number similarity trick makes so much sense - I bet that's exactly what happened to me. I'm definitely going to follow all your steps, especially clearing my call history since I've been redialing from recent calls. Thanks for taking the time to explain the technical side of this!

I was able to reach EDD yesterday after using the Claimyr service I mentioned above. The rep told me they're currently backlogged on processing claims from mass layoffs because they require additional verification from employers. So if you were part of a large layoff like you mentioned, that might be why you're stuck in pending. Definitely worth getting through to ask specifically about that.

AuthorThat's really helpful information and makes sense given my situation. I think I'll try Claimyr tomorrow if my morning call attempt doesn't work. At this point, I just need to talk to someone who can actually help before I miss another rent payment.

I feel your pain! I went through something similar last year and finally got through using a combination of strategies. Here's what worked for me: 1) Download an auto-redial app on your phone so you don't have to manually keep calling, 2) Try calling the disability line at (800) 480-3287 and ask to be transferred to regular UI - sometimes they can help or the transfer gets you past the initial queue, 3) If you're really desperate, try calling your state senator's office too (not just assembly member) - they often have different EDD contacts. The mass layoff explanation makes total sense for why you're stuck. Don't give up - you WILL get through eventually!
