Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my unemployment claim and I'm not sure what to do. I've been trying to get through to someone on the phone but it's been impossible. Does anyone have any advice on how to get answers about my claim? I'm really worried about the payment amounts and timeframes. Any help would be appreciated!
I'm freaking out right now. I had my phone eligibility interview with EDD on Tuesday and thought it went okay. The interviewer asked about my job separation and I explained everything truthfully (laid off due to company restructuring). When I checked my UI Online account today, I saw that my last TWO certifications just changed from 'pending' to 'disqualified'!!! I was counting on that money ($874) to pay rent next week. Does this mean my claim is completely rejected? I never received any notification explaining why I was disqualified. Has anyone experienced this after their phone interview? Is there a way to appeal or should I call EDD directly? I'm seriously panicking because I don't have a backup plan for rent.
UPDATE: I was able to speak with an EDD representative today. They confirmed that the disqualification was due to a discrepancy between what my former employer reported and what I stated in my interview. My employer claimed I was terminated for performance issues while I said it was a company restructuring. The good news is that I've submitted documentation (including my termination letter that specifically mentions restructuring) and they're reviewing my case. The representative said it's not uncommon for employers to contest claims to avoid increases in their unemployment insurance rates. If my documentation doesn't resolve the issue immediately, I'll need to go through the formal appeal process. The rep emphasized that I should continue certifying for benefits each week while this is sorted out.
I went through something very similar last year and want to share what I learned. The sudden switch from pending to disqualified right after a phone interview is usually because of conflicting information between your claim and what your employer reported. This happened to me when my company reported I was fired for attendance issues, but I had reported being laid off due to budget cuts. Here's what you should do immediately: 1. Call EDD using the 2511 number at exactly 8:00 AM - you'll have the best chance of getting through 2. Ask specifically what reason was given for your disqualification 3. Request they email you the determination notice if possible (faster than waiting for mail) The appeal process isn't as scary as it sounds. I appealed with documentation proving my layoff was legitimate (email from my manager, company-wide announcement about cuts) and won my case in about 6 weeks. Got all my backpay too. Don't give up - if you were truly laid off due to restructuring and have documentation proving it, you have a strong case. Keep certifying every two weeks even while disqualified so you don't miss out on any benefits if your appeal is successful.
So I'm having trouble with my identity verification for unemployment. They rejected my lease agreement saying it was the wrong document. Has anyone else had this problem? What documents did you use that actually worked? I'm getting frustrated and could really use some advice on how to get this sorted out.
Ugh, I feel your pain. I'm in the same boat. Been trying to verify for weeks now. This whole system is a joke ๐คก
I went through this exact same frustration last month! What finally worked for me was submitting a combination of my driver's license, a recent bank statement (less than 30 days old), and my Social Security card all at once. Make sure everything is crystal clear - I had to rescan my documents because the first photos were too blurry. Also, double check that your name appears EXACTLY the same on all documents. Mine got rejected initially because my middle initial was missing on one document. The whole process is super annoying but don't give up! Once you get the right combo of docs, it should go through pretty quickly.
I'm completely lost about my unemployment payment. UI Online shows 'PAID' status for this week's certification, supposedly via direct deposit, but nothing has hit my bank account after 3 days. Back in January 2024 I was receiving payments fine, but can't remember how! I found my old Money Network card (I think that replaced the BofA cards?) but it says expired 11/2023. I'm so confused because I definitely got paid somehow earlier this year. The EDD payment history shows the funds were issued, but I have no clue where they went. Has anyone dealt with this payment method confusion? Do I need to request a replacement card or fix my direct deposit settings? My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic!
Glad you were able to resolve this! For future reference (and for others reading this thread): 1. Always check payment preferences immediately after reopening a claim 2. Update your address with both EDD AND Money Network separately 3. If your card expires, Money Network typically sends a replacement 30-45 days before expiration 4. You can request expedited shipping of a replacement card for a fee 5. Even with an expired card, the money in your account is still accessible once you get a valid card Most importantly, any time you have a gap in your claim and then return to UI, double-check all your settings as if you're starting fresh.
Just wanted to add my experience - I had this exact same issue last year! My Money Network card expired in December 2023 and I didn't realize it until my January payment went missing. Turns out they automatically sent a replacement card to my address on file, but I had moved and forgot to update it with Money Network (even though I updated it with EDD). The key thing I learned is that EDD and Money Network have separate address systems - you have to update both! Also, if you're waiting for a replacement card, you can actually transfer funds from your Money Network account to your bank account through their website or app once you get access again. Just thought this might help someone else avoid the stress I went through!
I just opened my mail to find an EDD Notice of Overpayment claiming I received $7,200 in benefits I wasn't entitled to from Jan-Mar 2025. They're demanding I repay the ENTIRE AMOUNT within 30 days!!! I don't understand what happened. I reported all my part-time income correctly every time I certified. The letter mentions something about "unreported wages" but doesn't specify which employer or which weeks. I literally can't afford to pay this back - I'm still struggling paycheck to paycheck after being laid off. Has this happened to anyone else? What can I do? Do I need a lawyer? Will they garnish my wages if I can't pay? I'm seriously having a panic attack right now.
Update us on how your appeal goes! The success rate is actually pretty decent for people who have good documentation and a legitimate case. Don't get discouraged by the formal language in the notices - they make everything sound very final and scary, but the appeal process exists for a reason and is used successfully by many claimants.
I went through something similar last year - got hit with a $5,400 overpayment notice that made me physically sick to my stomach. Like others have said, appeal IMMEDIATELY and don't panic. In my case, it turned out EDD had a glitch in their system that was double-counting some of my reported wages. Here's what saved me: I kept a simple Excel spreadsheet throughout my entire claim period tracking what I earned each week vs what I reported when certifying. When I appealed, I submitted this spreadsheet along with all my pay stubs and certification screenshots. The appeals judge could clearly see I had been reporting accurately. Also, definitely try to get through to an actual EDD rep before your appeal hearing if possible. Sometimes they can spot obvious errors in their system that caused the overpayment. Don't make any payments until you exhaust the appeal process - once you start paying, it's much harder to get that money back even if you win your appeal later. You've got this! The system is broken but the appeal process does work when you have good documentation.

Has anyone tried the online chat feature on the unemployment website? I've had some success with that in the past.

I'm new here but going through the same nightmare! Been trying to reach EDD for weeks about my pending claim. Reading through all these suggestions is really helpful - I had no idea about contacting state reps or that there might be Facebook groups for this. @Aisha Hussain have you made any progress since posting this? Also curious if anyone knows the best time of day to try the online chat that @Dmitry Smirnov mentioned. This whole process is so stressful but at least we're not alone in this struggle!

Welcome to the struggle bus! ๐ I've been dealing with EDD issues for about 6 weeks now. From what I've learned lurking here, early morning (like 8-9 AM) seems to be the best time for online chat - that's when they're less swamped. Also, @Mei Wong s'advice about documenting everything is spot on. I started keeping a spreadsheet with dates, times, and who I talked to. It s'actually helped me track patterns in when I m'more likely to get through. The Facebook group suggestion is brilliant too - I found one for my county and they post updates about system outages and stuff. Hang in there! ๐ช

Hey @Mila Walker! Welcome to the group - sorry you're dealing with this too but you're definitely not alone. I've been fighting with EDD for about 2 months now and this community has been a lifesaver. @Javier Hernandez is right about the early morning thing - I ve'had better luck with chat around 8 AM. Also wanted to add that if you re'going to try that claimyr service @Yuki Sato mentioned, maybe wait a bit and see if the free methods work first? I m still'on the fence about paying for something that should be free. Keep us posted on how it goes!
