EDD took more money than my overpayment amount - will I get the $268 refunded?

Hey everyone, I'm in a weird situation with EDD. They hit me with an overpayment notice for approximately $1,200 a few months ago (something about unreported income from a side gig I did). Instead of setting up a payment plan, they intercepted both my state tax refund AND my federal tax refund. The problem is, they took MORE than what I owed! When I logged into my EDD account yesterday, it shows a credit balance of $268 in my favor. Has anyone experienced this before? Will they automatically send me the $268 they owe me back as a check? Or will it be applied to my EDD card? There's no info about refunds on their website that I can find, and calling is... well, you know how that goes. Any advice appreciated!

One more thing to add - if 8 weeks pass and you still haven't received your refund, you can also try contacting your state assembly member's office. They have liaisons who work directly with EDD and can often get answers when regular channels fail. Just Google "[your city] state assembly member" to find your representative.

That's a great idea! I'll definitely do that if things drag on. Really appreciate all the helpful advice everyone!

I went through something similar last year with a $900 overpayment where they intercepted both my refunds totaling $1,150. The good news is that yes, you should definitely get that $268 back! In my case, it took about 7 weeks to receive the refund check, and like others mentioned, it came from the State Controller's Office with minimal explanation. One tip I'd add - keep screenshots of your UI Online account showing that credit balance, just in case you need proof later. Also, if you need to call them about it, the best time I found to get through was Tuesday or Wednesday mornings right when they open at 8 AM. The Collections Division folks were actually pretty helpful once I got connected. The waiting is frustrating, but the system does eventually work for refunds when they clearly owe you money. Just be patient and keep monitoring your account!

EDD benefits while recovering from COVID in 2025 - how to file properly?

Hey everyone, I'm really confused about filing for unemployment since my situation is a bit complicated. I was working full-time at a retail store (about 3 years) until last month when they cut my hours to basically nothing (like 5-8 hours a week). Then two weeks ago I got COVID pretty bad and couldn't work at all. My doctor told me to stay home for 3 weeks minimum because of some lung complications. Do I file for regular unemployment because of the reduced hours first? Or should I file for disability because of COVID? Can I switch between the two? I've never applied for any benefits before and I'm worried about making a mistake that would mess up getting any money. My rent is due in 10 days and I'm really starting to panic. Also, does anyone know if there are any special COVID provisions still active in 2025 or did all those end? Thanks for any help!!

Update: I called my doctor and they're filling out the SDI form today. I also started my UI application for the reduced hours period before I got sick. Thanks everyone for the help! I'll update again once I know if everything got approved.

Good luck! Make sure you certify for your UI benefits on time every two weeks once they start coming through. The system will remind you but it's easy to forget!

Great to hear you're making progress with both applications! Just a heads up - when you transition back from SDI to UI after you recover, you might need to reopen your UI claim rather than filing a brand new one. The system should recognize your existing claim and just reactivate it. Also, keep all your medical documentation from your doctor handy in case EDD requests additional verification for your SDI claim. The transition between programs can sometimes trigger additional reviews, but as long as your dates and documentation are clear, you should be fine. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Can I reschedule my EDD eligibility interview date? Need benefits ASAP

I just got laid off from my job on July 17 and filed for unemployment 2 days later. Today I checked my UI Online account and saw I have an eligibility interview scheduled for August 9 - almost 3 weeks away! The message says 'You have a phone interview appointment scheduled. There is a question concerning your eligibility.' The problem is, I can't get ANY benefits until after this interview happens. My rent is due August 1, and I'm seriously stressing about how I'll cover it. Has anyone successfully gotten their eligibility interview moved up? I can't believe I have to wait almost a month without any income just because they have a question about my claim. Any tips on what to do? I've tried calling but we all know how that goes...

Just wanted to follow up - if you do manage to get through to EDD, make sure to specifically ask about conditional payments. In some cases, they can release payments while waiting for the interview if your hardship qualifies. Not guaranteed, but worth asking about. Also, document every call attempt you make. If your benefits are eventually approved, you may be eligible for back pay for all weeks you were qualified but not paid due to their processing delays.

Thanks for the follow up! I've started keeping track of all my call attempts in a spreadsheet. I'll definitely ask about conditional payments if I can get through to anyone.

Any luck getting through to EDD? One thing to keep in mind - when they do call for your interview, they'll likely ask detailed questions about your separation. Be honest but concise. If it truly was a workforce reduction, they'll want to know why you specifically were selected, whether there was a seniority system, if others were also laid off (even if in different departments), etc. Having clear, factual answers ready will help your case.

I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above! The rep said they couldn't move up my interview but did add notes about my financial hardship to my account. They also explained that my employer reported my separation as 'misconduct' which is completely false! Now I'm gathering all my documentation to fight this. At least I know what I'm dealing with now. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

That's great you got through! But wow, misconduct?! That's a serious allegation that could disqualify you entirely if they uphold it. Make sure you have your termination paperwork, any emails about the workforce reduction, and documentation showing it wasn't performance-related. The burden is on your employer to prove misconduct, not on you to prove innocence. Good luck with your interview - at least now you can prepare properly knowing what they're claiming!

Federal employee layoff - EDD benefits while switching to private sector?

I was part of the recent federal workforce reduction and suddenly find myself unemployed after 6 years in a government position. I've never had to claim unemployment before and I'm completely lost on how EDD works when transitioning from federal to private employment. My SF-8 form says I should apply with California EDD, but the online application keeps asking questions that don't seem relevant to federal employment. Has anyone here gone through this process after federal service? Do I qualify for the same benefit amounts as private sector workers? It's been two weeks and I'm getting nervous about finances. Also wondering if applying for CalFresh would impact my unemployment claim in any way?

Just wanted to follow up - how is your claim going? Were you able to get it processed? Federal employee claims usually take 3-4 weeks to process even when everything goes smoothly because of the extra verification steps required.

I finally got through to someone at EDD yesterday after multiple attempts. They confirmed my claim was received but said it's "pending federal verification" which could take another 2-3 weeks. I've applied for CalFresh in the meantime to help with groceries. Thanks for checking in - this process is definitely more complicated than I expected!

I went through this exact situation when I was laid off from the Forest Service two years ago. A few additional tips that might help: 1) Keep detailed records of all your communications with EDD - dates, times, who you spoke with, and what they told you. Federal claims seem to get transferred between different departments a lot. 2) If you haven't already, request your complete personnel file from your former agency including all SF-50s. Sometimes they need documentation beyond just your final SF-8. 3) The "pending federal verification" status is normal but frustrating - your former agency has 10 business days to respond to EDD's inquiry, but many take longer. 4) Consider reaching out to your former HR department directly to confirm they received and processed EDD's verification request. Sometimes there are communication gaps. The good news is once it's approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you've been waiting. Hang in there!

UI Online registration failing with EDD Customer Account Number - info doesn't match error

Ughh I'm so frustrated right now!! I just got my letter in the mail with my EDDCAN number to register for UI Online. I've been trying for the past 2 hours to set up my account but keep getting the stupid 'information does not match our records' error message. I triple-checked everything - birthdate, SSN, EDDCAN - all exactly as it appears on the letter. I even tried typing the EDDCAN with and without dashes. Nothing works! Has anyone else dealt with this registration nightmare? Did you eventually get it fixed or do I have to call them (which seems impossible these days)?

Glad you got it working! For anyone else facing this issue in the future, special characters in names (hyphens, apostrophes, spaces, etc.) are a common source of registration problems with UI Online. The EDD's database sometimes stores these differently than how they appear on official documents. Always try variations of your name format if you encounter matching errors.

Oh wow, this is such a relief to read! I've been banging my head against the wall with the exact same issue for the past week. My last name has a hyphen in it and I bet that's what's causing my problems too. Going to try entering it without the hyphen tomorrow morning. It's so typical of EDD to have a system that can't handle basic punctuation that appears on legal documents! Thanks for sharing your solution - you probably just saved me hours of frustration and multiple failed phone attempts.
