EDD penalty weeks with part-time job - how will 20hrs/week affect my benefits?

Hey everyone, found myself in a tricky spot with EDD and wondering if anyone's been through something similar. I got hit with penalty weeks from a mistake I made last year (didn't understand how to properly report some 1099 work). Already served 10 of the 20 penalty weeks they slapped me with, and now EDD says it's too late to appeal the decision. The situation just changed though - I managed to land a part-time position at a warehouse working about 20 hours weekly. Been there for just 3 weeks now. First two weeks were exactly 20 hours, and last week they bumped me up to 25 hours. I've reported all of this honestly on my certifications. How does this part-time work affect my remaining penalty weeks? Do I still have to serve all 10 remaining weeks even with this part-time job? Does the income reduce the "debt" of penalty weeks somehow? The EDD website is super confusing about this specific situation and I can't get through on the phone. Any insights would be appreciated!

Wait I just realized something - are penalty weeks the same as disqualification weeks? Because my cousin had disqualification weeks and those worked differently I think? I'm so confused by all these EDD terms!

They're different. Disqualification weeks mean you don't qualify for benefits for specific reasons (like voluntary quit without good cause, misconduct, etc.). Penalty weeks are a punishment for misreporting where you qualify for benefits but don't receive payment as a penalty. With penalty weeks, you must continue to meet all eligibility requirements and certify, but you don't get paid for those weeks.

This is a really helpful thread! I'm in a similar situation with penalty weeks from EDD. One thing I learned from my research is that you should also keep track of your job search activities during penalty weeks if you're required to do so. Even though you're not getting paid, you still need to meet all the regular eligibility requirements including work search if it applies to your claim type. Also, @Mary Bates - since you're working part-time and still under your WBA, make sure you're reporting your gross earnings (before taxes) on your certification, not your take-home pay. I made that mistake once and it caused issues. The $320 you mentioned - is that gross or net? Just want to make sure you're reporting correctly to avoid any additional problems!

EDD Account Locked - Can't Remember Last Payment Amount for Password Reset

I'm totally freaking out right now. I tried logging into my EDD UI Online account to certify for this week but I guess I forgot my password after not using it for a month. The reset process is asking for the last payment amount I received AND the last 5 digits of my SSN. I know my social obviously, but I have NO IDEA what my last payment was! I don't keep track of those amounts and I deleted the notification emails thinking I wouldn't need them. Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there another way to recover my account without knowing the exact payment amount? Do they want the amount before or after taxes? This is so frustrating!

One final tip: Once you regain access to your account, I strongly recommend setting up a secure way to track your payment amounts. Whether it's a dedicated spreadsheet, a specific folder in your email just for EDD notifications, or even a simple notebook, having this information accessible can save you tremendous headaches in the future. EDD's systems are unlikely to become more user-friendly anytime soon, so it's best to prepare for these situations in advance.

You're absolutely right. I've definitely learned my lesson the hard way. I'm going to create a dedicated folder for all EDD correspondence and keep track of payment amounts in a spreadsheet going forward. Never making this mistake again!

I had this exact same issue about 6 months ago! Here's what worked for me: check if you have the EDD mobile app installed on your phone - sometimes it saves payment history even when you can't log into the website. Also, if you use any budgeting apps like Mint or YNAB that connect to your bank account, they might have categorized the EDD deposits and you can see the exact amounts there. The payment amount they want is the gross amount before any taxes or deductions. Don't give up - there are definitely ways to find this info without having to wait on hold for hours!

CalJOBS registration suddenly required for entertainment industry UI claim - is this new for 2025?

Just opened a new UI claim last week (production job ended - typical entertainment industry cycle) and got this weird letter saying I MUST register with CalJOBS or risk losing my benefits? I've been through UI at least 4 times in the last decade due to how our industry works, and I've NEVER had to do this before. I'm a VFX supervisor and always return to work when productions start up again. The letter says something about 'work search requirements' but in my field we don't exactly use normal job boards. It's all about industry connections and timing when projects get greenlit. Is this a new 2025 requirement? Do entertainment professionals actually have to register with CalJOBS now? Seems bizarre since we have specialized hiring processes. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Really don't want to mess up my claim over a technicality.

Just to follow up - I found that after completing the CalJOBS registration, you can actually customize your profile to list entertainment industry job categories. Under the occupation search, use terms like "Media" or "Arts" and you'll find some relevant categories. Not perfect, but it makes the profile look more legitimate when an EDD reviewer checks it. Remember, the key requirement is registering and creating a profile. The actual job applications can still be through your industry channels as long as you document them during certification.

Great tip! I'll look for those categories when setting up my profile. I still think it's strange they're now requiring this for entertainment industry workers, but seems manageable with these workarounds. Thanks everyone for the advice - I'll register today and keep certifying as normal.

As someone who just went through this process as a cinematographer, I can confirm this is definitely real and required now. I was initially panicked too, but it's really not as bad as it seems once you understand what they actually want. Here's my experience: I registered on CalJOBS in about 20 minutes, uploaded a basic resume, and selected "Motion Picture and Video Industries" under the occupation categories. For work search activities, I just document my normal industry networking - calls to DPs I know, emails to production companies, checking with my agent, etc. When I certify, I select "contacted employer directly" for most of these activities. The system seems designed more for compliance tracking than actually forcing us to use their job board. I haven't applied to a single job through CalJOBS but my benefits have continued without issue as long as I'm documenting legitimate job search efforts in our industry. Don't stress too much about it - just get registered ASAP and keep doing what you normally do to find work!

How to properly close my EDD claim after finding a job?

Just got hired at a new company and start tomorrow! After being on unemployment for 5 months, I'm finally back to work (thank goodness). But now I'm confused about how to properly close my EDD claim. I still have a decent balance left and several weeks of eligibility remaining. Do I just stop certifying? Is there a formal process to notify EDD I'm employed again? Should I call them? I don't want to accidentally commit fraud or have problems down the road if they think I'm still collecting while working. Anyone know the right procedure for closing out an active claim?

Congratulations on your new job! To summarize what everyone has said: 1. Complete your final certification accurately, reporting your employment and earnings 2. After that, simply stop certifying 3. Keep your EDD account information and payment records 4. Your claim remains technically open for the benefit year This approach ensures you receive all benefits you're entitled to while properly notifying EDD of your employment status. Best of luck with your new position!

Thank you all for the helpful advice! I'll certify one last time this Sunday, report my new job, and then consider my unemployment chapter closed. It's been a stressful 5 months, but I'm excited to be working again!

Congratulations on landing the new job! Just wanted to add one more tip that helped me when I transitioned back to work - take a screenshot or photo of your final certification confirmation page after you submit it. This serves as proof that you properly reported your employment status and earnings on the correct date. I had a friend who had a minor discrepancy months later and having that screenshot really helped resolve it quickly with EDD. It's just one more layer of documentation to protect yourself. Wishing you all the best in your new role!

Filed for PFL Bonding with EDD - What to expect for relationship evidence?

Hey everyone, I just filed for Paid Family Leave Bonding on 4/17. Has anyone gone through the process of providing relationship connection evidence? I'm wondering what to expect next and how long it usually takes to hear back from EDD. Any tips or experiences would be super helpful!

Hey OP, congrats on the new family member! Quick heads up - make sure you're also looking into SDI (State Disability Insurance) if you gave birth. You can get up to 4 weeks before your due date and 6-8 weeks after for recovery, THEN your PFL bonding time starts. Don't leave money on the table!

Oh wow, I had no idea! Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely look into that.

This! ๐Ÿ‘† I almost missed out on my SDI benefits because I didn't know about them. Spread the word, people!

I went through this exact process about 6 months ago! The relationship evidence part was actually pretty straightforward - they just wanted to see that I was legally connected to the baby. Since I'm married, I uploaded our marriage certificate along with the birth certificate showing both our names. One thing that helped me was calling them right after I submitted my initial claim to ask what specific documents they'd need so I could get everything ready in advance. Took a few tries to get through, but it saved me time later when they made their official request. The whole process took about 5 weeks from filing to getting my first payment, which seems to be pretty typical based on what I've seen here. Make sure you certify for benefits every two weeks once you're approved - that part is easy to forget! Best of luck with everything, and congrats on your new addition! ๐Ÿผ
