EDD claim status check - Called but no one spoke. Help!
I filed a claim for unemployment benefits a while back, and I'm trying to check on its status. I've been calling the EDD office for days, but no one ever picks up. Today, I finally got through after waiting on hold forever, but when I said hello, there was just silence on the other end. I kept saying hello for like 10 minutes, but got no response. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice on how to actually talk to a real person at EDD?

Ugh, classic EDD. Their phone system is a total nightmare. I've been dealing with the same issue for weeks now. It's like they're purposely making it impossible to reach them. 🤬

•For real tho. I swear they just have a recording of hold music playing on loop with no actual people working there 😂

•I heard they're understaffed, but this is ridiculous. How are we supposed to get help if we can't even talk to anyone?

•ikr? It's like they expect us to just give up and go away. Not gonna happen, I need that money! 💰

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site called claimyr.com. It's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then sends the call to your phone when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Sounds too good to be true. Are you sure it's legit?

•20 bucks? That's steep just to talk to someone who should be available for free.

•I get the skepticism, but I swear it worked for me. After weeks of trying, I was desperate enough to try anything. And yeah, it sucks to pay, but I figured my time was worth more than that at that point.

•How long did you have to wait after using the service?

•It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. The service called me when an agent was on the line. Way better than wasting a whole day hitting redial.

Have you tried reaching out to your local assembly member's office? They sometimes have direct lines to EDD and can help push your claim through.

•Yeah, it's been a total nightmare. I've pretty much given up at this point. Good luck to you tho!

Pro tip: Try calling right when they open in the morning. I've had better luck getting through that way. Also, make sure you're calling the right number for your specific issue. They have different lines for different types of claims.

•Thanks for the advice! What time do they open? And do you know where I can find the different numbers for specific issues?

•They open at 8am Pacific Time. You can find all the different numbers on the EDD website under the 'Contact EDD' section. Make sure to check which one applies to your situation!

This is why we need to overhaul the entire unemployment system. It's clearly not equipped to handle high volume situations like we've seen recently. We should be writing to our representatives about this!

•100% agree. The system is archaic and needs a complete redesign. But good luck getting politicians to care about it until the next crisis hits. 🙄

Hey OP, when exactly did you file your claim? There's been a huge backlog since the pandemic started, so processing times are way longer than usual. It might just be stuck in the system.

I've had success using their online portal to check my claim status. Have you tried that? Sometimes it's more up-to-date than what the phone reps can tell you anyway.

•I tried, but it just says 'pending' and has for weeks. That's why I've been trying to call and get more info.

•Ah, gotcha. Yeah, 'pending' is EDD speak for 'we have no clue what's going on' 🙃

Here's what worked for me: 1. Call early in the morning, like 7:55am 2. Use the comma trick to auto-input your selections (look it up) 3. If you get a message saying they're too busy, hang up and try again 4. Repeat until you get in the queue 5. Once in the queue, DO NOT HANG UP no matter how long it takes It took me about 20 tries but I finally got through. Good luck!

•This is solid advice. The comma trick is a game changer!

•What's the comma trick? Can you explain?

•@profile21 Sure! You add commas and pauses to your phone number so it automatically enters your selections. Like 18003005616,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,2,1. Each comma is a 2-second pause. You'll have to play around with it to get the timing right for the specific menu options you need.
