EDD Birth Certificate Requirement for SDI Claim - Hospital Proof Enough?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what kind of document I need to submit for my wife's claim. Does anyone know if the EDD requires an actual birth certificate or if just some proof from the hospital is enough? I'm not sure which one they're asking for and I don't want to delay the process by sending the wrong thing.

In my experience, they usually want the actual birth certificate. It's a pain, but it's the most official document you can provide. Better safe than sorry, ya know?

Really? That sucks. Getting a birth certificate can take forever š«

Yep, can confirm. They asked for the birth certificate when I filed my claim last year. Don't try to cut corners or they'll just drag out the process even longer.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info, guess I'll start the process of getting the official certificate.

I think it depends on the specific claim type. For some claims, hospital records are enough. But for others, they want the official birth certificate. What type of claim are you filing?

It's for my wife's disability claim after giving birth. Does that make a difference?

Ah, for SDI after birth they usually want the official birth certificate. It's annoying, but it's how they verify the date of birth and your relationship to the child.

Pro tip: call the EDD and ask them directly. I know it's a pain to get through, but it's better than guessing and potentially delaying your claim even more.

I found a way to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Wait, what? Is that even legal? Sounds kinda sketchy tbh

Totally legal! It's just an automated system that waits on hold for you. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

The EDD website is so confusing about this stuff. You'd think they'd make it crystal clear what documents they need. But nooooo, that would be too easy š

Here's the deal with EDD and birth certificates for SDI claims after childbirth: ā¢ For the initial claim: Hospital discharge papers or other medical documentation is usually sufficient. ā¢ For extending the claim: They often require the official birth certificate. ā¢ If it's a bonding claim (like Paid Family Leave): Always send the birth certificate. However, the safest bet is to submit the birth certificate from the get-go if you have it. It covers all bases and prevents potential delays. If you don't have the birth certificate yet: 1. Submit the hospital documentation you have now. 2. Include a note explaining that you've applied for the birth certificate and will send it as soon as you receive it. 3. Follow up with the birth certificate ASAP. Remember, each case can be slightly different, so when in doubt, overcommunicate with EDD. And document EVERYTHING ā dates you submitted docs, who you talked to, etc. It'll save you headaches later if there are any issues. Hope this helps!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! This is exactly what I needed. I'll go ahead and submit what I have now and work on getting that birth certificate ASAP.

Preach! š The whole system needs an overhaul. It's 2023, why are we still jumping through so many hoops?

Quick question - has anyone had luck submitting a digital copy of the birth certificate? Or do they require a physical copy sent by mail?

I submitted a scanned copy through their online portal and it was accepted. Just make sure it's a clear, high-quality scan.

Digital worked for me too, but I've heard horror stories of them rejecting digital copies. Might depend on the specific agent handling your claim. ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
