Can I extend my SDI maternity leave before transitioning to PFL baby bonding?
I'm 7 weeks into my maternity leave (on SDI) and my doctor originally approved me for 8 weeks recovery after birth. I'm still having some complications and really don't feel ready to transition yet. Is it possible to extend my maternity disability leave before I file for baby bonding PFL? Who do I need to contact about this? My HR dept says to talk to EDD but I can't get through on the phone. Has anyone successfully extended their maternity leave period? Getting anxious about this since my current SDI claim ends next week!

Yes, you can extend your pregnancy disability leave/SDI before transitioning to PFL baby bonding! You need to have your doctor fill out a supplemental medical certification (basically another DE2501 form) stating you need additional recovery time. Your doctor needs to provide medical justification for why you need more time beyond the standard 6-8 weeks. Call your doctor's office ASAP to request this since your claim is ending soon.

•Thank you so much!! I'll call my OB tomorrow morning. Do you know if I need to submit anything online to EDD first or just get the form from my doctor and then submit it?

The EDD system is designed to make everything as DIFFICULT as possible!! I tried extending my maternity leave last year and it was a NIGHTMARE. My doctor submitted the form but EDD "never received it"... TWICE!! Had to fax it THREE TIMES before they acknowledged it. Start calling them NOW and keep detailed records of everyone you talk to. The system is broken!!

I went thru this in January! My doctor had to extend me by 2 more weeks after my c-section got infected. You 100% need your doctor to submit that form, and then you need to call EDD to make sure they connect it to your existing claim. The rules say you can get up to 52 weeks if medically necessary but good luck getting anyone on the phone lol

•Try using Claimyr to get through to EDD on the phone - it worked for me when I needed to sort out my disability extension. The service connects you with an EDD agent right away instead of waiting on hold for hours. I watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5) and it really does work as advertised. Their website is claimyr.com - definitely worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive claim issues like this.

my cousin had to extend her maternity leave for postpartum depression and her doctor just filled out another form and she got approved for 4 more weeks pretty fast but i think it depends on your doctor and your medical reason good luck!!!

Just to clarify some information that's being shared: You're currently on SDI (State Disability Insurance) for your pregnancy recovery - this is different from PFL (Paid Family Leave) which is what you'll transition to for baby bonding. The extension process requires: 1. Have your doctor complete a supplemental DE2501 form indicating why you medically need additional recovery time 2. Submit this form to EDD before your current disability claim ends 3. Include your current claim ID on all documentation 4. Once approved, you'll continue receiving SDI benefits for the extended period 5. Only after your extended SDI ends would you apply for PFL baby bonding Your total SDI benefit period can be up to 52 weeks if medically necessary, but it requires proper documentation. The standard is 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after (longer for c-section), but extensions are common for complications.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I'm going to get my doctor to fill out that form tomorrow. Just to double-check - the extended disability won't affect my 8 weeks of baby bonding time after, right? I want to make sure I still get the full time with my baby once I'm recovered.

•That's correct - extending your SDI disability period does not affect your entitlement to the full 8 weeks of PFL baby bonding. They are separate benefits, and you'll still get your complete 8 weeks of baby bonding time regardless of how long your disability lasts. Just make sure to apply for PFL within 41 days of when you want that benefit to start (after your disability ends).

Has anyone actually got through to EDD on the phone lately??? I've been trying for like a week straight and it's always "we're experiencing high call volume" then hangs up on me. How are we supposed to handle urgent issues like this??

•THIS!!! It's impossible!!! I spent HOURS trying to reach them over THREE DAYS and kept getting disconnected!!! The only thing that worked was physically mailing the form with delivery confirmation AND sending a message through the online portal EVERY SINGLE DAY until they finally responded. The system is BROKEN!!!

UPDATE: I talked to my doctor and she agreed to give me a 3-week extension due to my recovery complications! She's filling out the form today and I'm going to try calling EDD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Thanks everyone for your advice! I feel much less anxious now knowing this is a normal thing to request.

•That's great news! Make sure to follow up with EDD within 3-5 business days to confirm they received your doctor's certification. The SDI extension should connect seamlessly with your current claim if processed correctly. Remember to start your PFL application once you're medically cleared, since there's no automatic transition. Good luck with your recovery!

So glad your doctor was able to help you with the extension! Just wanted to add - when you do get through to EDD (whether through Claimyr or regular phone), make sure to get a confirmation number for your extension request. Also ask them to email you a summary of what was discussed. I learned this the hard way when they claimed they had no record of my call even though I had spoken to someone for 20 minutes. Having that paper trail saved me when I had to escalate my case. Wishing you a smooth recovery!

Congratulations on advocating for yourself and getting the extension you need! Recovery is so important and you shouldn't feel rushed back before you're ready. One thing I learned from my own experience - make sure to keep copies of everything your doctor submits, including the original DE2501 and any supplemental forms. I'd also recommend taking screenshots of any confirmation numbers or reference numbers you get from EDD. The system can be glitchy and having your own records helps if anything gets lost in their system. Take care of yourself and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it during this process!

•This is such great advice! I'm new to this whole process and honestly feeling overwhelmed by all the paperwork and phone calls. It's reassuring to hear from people who've been through similar situations. I'm not pregnant yet but my partner and I are planning to start trying soon, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can about maternity leave and disability benefits beforehand. Posts like this are so helpful - thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and tips! It sounds like having good documentation and being persistent with EDD are key.

I'm so glad you got your doctor to approve the extension! That's exactly what you needed to hear. Just wanted to share that when I went through this process last year, I found it helpful to submit the form through multiple channels - I faxed it, mailed it with certified mail, AND uploaded it through the online portal. It might seem like overkill, but given how many people have had issues with EDD "losing" paperwork, I wanted to cover all my bases. Also, if you do end up using Claimyr to get through to EDD, have all your information ready - claim number, Social Security number, and the dates of your original claim. The representatives usually ask for all of this right away. Hope your recovery goes smoothly and you get the time you need with your little one!

•That's such smart advice about submitting through multiple channels! I never would have thought to do that but it makes total sense given all the horror stories about EDD losing paperwork. I'm definitely going to do the fax, mail, AND online portal approach when I submit my doctor's form. Better safe than sorry! And thanks for the tip about having all the info ready for the Claimyr call - I'll make sure to have everything written down beforehand so I don't waste time fumbling around for numbers. This community has been so helpful, I really appreciate everyone sharing their real experiences instead of just the official government website info that doesn't tell you about all these practical workarounds!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this exact situation 6 months ago! You're absolutely doing the right thing by advocating for yourself - don't let anyone make you feel bad about needing more recovery time. Every body heals differently and complications are more common than people talk about. When I extended my SDI, I also made sure to ask my doctor to be very specific about my symptoms and limitations on the DE2501 form. The more detailed medical justification they provide, the smoother the approval process tends to go. Also, once you do get your extension approved, you might want to start researching your PFL application process now so you're prepared for that transition when the time comes. The good news is that the PFL application is usually much easier than dealing with SDI extensions! Hang in there - you've got this!

•Thank you for this encouraging message! As someone who's completely new to navigating the EDD system, it's so reassuring to hear from people who've actually been through this process. I really appreciate the tip about asking the doctor to be specific about symptoms and limitations - that's exactly the kind of practical advice I wouldn't have known to ask for. It sounds like being proactive and detailed at every step really makes a difference. I'm definitely going to start looking into the PFL application process early like you suggested. It's amazing how much more confident I feel just from reading everyone's real experiences here compared to trying to figure it out from the official government websites alone!

I'm really glad to see this thread and how supportive everyone has been! As someone who's planning to start a family soon, I had no idea that SDI extensions were even possible or how the process worked. Reading through everyone's experiences has been incredibly educational - especially learning about the DE2501 form, the importance of detailed medical documentation, and all the practical tips about submitting through multiple channels and keeping detailed records. It's frustrating to hear how difficult EDD can be to deal with, but it's so valuable to know about resources like Claimyr and strategies for getting through to them. Samantha, I hope your recovery goes smoothly and that the extension process works out seamlessly for you. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences - this kind of real-world knowledge is so much more helpful than just reading the official policy documents!

•I'm so glad you found this thread helpful too! When I was first navigating pregnancy benefits, I felt completely lost trying to decode all the government websites and forms. This community has been such a lifesaver for getting real, practical advice from people who've actually been through the process. One thing I wish I had known earlier is that it's totally normal to need extensions - so many of us end up needing more time than the "standard" recovery period, especially with complications. It's great that you're researching this stuff ahead of time! I'd also recommend connecting with other expecting parents in your area if possible, since different doctors and employers can have slightly different processes even within the same state system. The more you know going in, the less stressful it'll be when you actually need to use these benefits!

•Congratulations on your pregnancy! It's so smart of you to be researching all of this ahead of time. I wish I had been as proactive when I was expecting - I basically went in blind and had to figure everything out on the fly when complications arose. One additional tip I'd add based on my experience: start building a relationship with your doctor's office staff early, especially whoever handles the medical forms and disability paperwork. When I needed my extension forms filled out quickly, having a good rapport with the office manager made all the difference in getting it processed fast. Also, don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions about their typical approach to disability leave during your regular appointments - some doctors are more conservative with time off recommendations while others are more generous, and it's good to know where yours stands. You're going to do great!

I just went through this exact same situation 3 months ago! You absolutely can extend your SDI maternity leave, and it sounds like you have legitimate medical reasons for needing more time. The key is getting your doctor to be very specific about your complications on the supplemental DE2501 form - don't let them just write something vague like "needs more recovery time." They should detail exactly what complications you're experiencing and why you're not medically cleared to return to work yet. I ended up getting a 4-week extension after my c-section wound reopened, and EDD approved it pretty quickly once they had the detailed medical documentation. Also, pro tip: if you can't get through to EDD by phone (which is likely), you can also submit a "Contact EDD" message through your online SDI account portal - they usually respond within 2-3 business days. Don't stress too much about the timing - as long as your doctor submits the extension before your current claim ends, you should be covered. Take care of yourself and don't feel guilty about needing more time to heal properly!

•This is such reassuring information, thank you! I'm actually in a very similar boat - I'm about 5 weeks into my maternity leave and starting to realize I might need more time than originally planned. The tip about making sure the doctor is specific about complications on the DE2501 form is really valuable - I wouldn't have known to ask for that level of detail. I'm also glad to hear about the online portal option for contacting EDD since getting through by phone seems nearly impossible. It's so helpful to hear from someone who just went through this recently and had success with the extension process. Did you have to do anything special to make sure your extended SDI claim connected properly with your original claim, or did EDD handle that automatically once they approved the extension?

Ella Russell
•Great question! In my case, EDD handled the connection automatically once they approved the extension. The key is making sure your doctor includes your existing claim number on the supplemental DE2501 form - that's how they link it to your current claim rather than starting a whole new one. When I submitted mine, I also wrote my claim number in the cover letter and mentioned that this was an extension of an existing pregnancy disability claim. The approval letter I got back referenced my original claim number, so I knew it was properly connected. Just make sure to keep certifying for benefits as usual while the extension is being processed - don't stop certifying even if your original end date passes, as long as you've submitted the extension paperwork. If for some reason they don't connect it properly (which seems rare based on what I've read), you can always call or message through the portal to get it sorted out. The whole process was actually smoother than I expected once I had the right documentation!

As someone who's been lurking here while preparing for my own maternity leave in a few months, I've learned so much from reading everyone's real experiences. The detail about making sure your doctor is specific on the DE2501 form and including your claim number on all documentation is incredibly valuable practical advice that you just don't get from the official websites. Samantha, it sounds like you're handling this exactly right by advocating for yourself and getting the medical documentation you need. Don't feel bad about needing more recovery time - complications are so much more common than people talk about, and every body heals differently.
