the more i read these threads the more i think money network should just be removed as an EDD payment option entirely. every third post in this forum is about money network card problems. direct deposit and paper checks only imo
Hard agree. The 'convenience' of the prepaid card is not worth this level of dysfunction. And it disproportionately affects people who are already in financial distress — the people who can least afford to have their UI funds stuck in limbo.
someone needs to forward this whole thread to the EDD director's office
Quick update from someone who resolved a similar situation: I did the CFPB complaint, used Claimyr to get through to EDD and had them document the card failure on my claim, AND called Money Network back referencing my CFPB complaint number. Card arrived via overnight shipping three days later. The key was doing all three simultaneously rather than waiting to see if each one worked before trying the next.
Coming back to say — for anyone who's exhausted the Money Network route and suspects there might be an actual payment issue on EDD's end (not just a card issue), getting through to a live EDD agent is really the only way to know for sure. Claimyr at claimyr.com was genuinely useful for me in that situation. Way better than the standard EDD phone line experience where you just get the 'call volume too high' message and get disconnected. Their demo video https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu71-SX8phKM is worth a watch if you're trying to understand how it helps.
Really glad it worked for you. It's not a magic fix for the underlying problem but at least you can actually talk to someone and figure out what's going on.
Summary for anyone who finds this thread via search: 1) Card not working at ATM = Money Network issue, call them or use their app. 2) Payment not showing up at all = Could be EDD or Money Network, check EDD portal first. 3) Claim-related questions = California EDD directly. 4) Transaction disputes or card replacement = Money Network only. 5) If you can't reach EDD by phone try early morning calls or look into call assistance services. The distinction between EDD and Money Network is the most important thing to understand — they are two separate entities and each only handles their own part of the process.

Here's my honest hot take: California EDD should mandate that Money Network provide tracking numbers for every card mailed to a new claimant. The lack of any tracking information for a debit card carrying someone's entire income replacement is genuinely unacceptable. I've filed feedback on the EDD website about this. Not that it'll change anything but at least I said something.

•I understand the cost argument but we're talking about the state of California here. The budget exists. This is a choice they're making about how much friction to put between people and their benefits.

•honestly both of yall are right. the infrastructure exists to do better, they just haven't prioritized it from a UX perspective

UPDATE from OP: My Money Network card arrived this morning!! Day 9 from when my California EDD payment showed as issued on UI Online. It did come in a plain white envelope exactly like people warned — I almost set it aside to open later. Activated it immediately and the funds were available right away. For anyone finding this thread later: count on 7-12 calendar days from your UI Online payment issued date, watch your mailbox carefully for plain envelopes with out-of-state return addresses, don't request a replacement card before day 12 unless a live Money Network rep confirms it was never mailed, and set up direct deposit on UI Online ASAP so future payments skip this whole process. Thank you to everyone who helped me through the anxiety of waiting!
