Worried about doctor's medical certification for EDD SDI - how long before it shows online?

I started my disability leave 9 days ago due to rotator cuff surgery (torn from a biking accident) and I'm freaking out about my claim status. I completed my portion of the SDI application online last Thursday, but my orthopedic surgeon insisted on mailing in his medical certification form instead of doing it electronically. He overnight shipped it to EDD this Monday and tracking shows it was delivered yesterday morning around 10:30am. My online account still shows "pending medical certification" and nothing has changed since I submitted my part. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for EDD to scan and upload the paper forms from doctors? I'm worried because my surgeon's office has messed up paperwork before, and I don't want my claim delayed because of it. I keep checking my SDI Online account every few hours but nothing is updating. Should I be worried or is this normal processing time? I've got bills coming due next week and I'm anxious about getting my first payment processed.

In my experience with EDD SDI, it takes 7-10 business days for them to process mailed medical certifications. They've got a huge backlog constantly. When my primary care physician mailed in my paperwork last November, it took 8 business days before it showed up in my online account. Just because the mail was delivered doesn't mean someone has opened it, sorted it, and scanned it into their system yet. I recommend giving it until the end of next week before getting too concerned. If nothing shows up by then, you can try calling EDD (good luck with that) or contact your doctor to see if they can resubmit the certification electronically, which is much faster.

Thanks for this info - that helps calm my nerves a bit. I'll give it until the end of next week. Do you know if there's any way to verify they actually received it besides the mail tracking? My surgeon's office said they can't resubmit electronically because they don't have the system set up for it (small practice).

Two weeks?! That's so much longer than I expected. Did you have to do anything special to follow up, or did it just eventually show up on its own?

I just went through this same nightmare. My doctor mailed in the medical certification form and it took 12 calendar days before it showed up on my SDI account. And this was after my doctor's office confirmed they sent it TWICE! I was checking my account 5x a day and driving myself crazy. SDI is seriously understaffed right now. I've heard from people that they've got stacks of mail to process and not enough people to handle it. That's why the electronic submission is so much faster, but not all doctors are set up for it. Just hang tight - it'll show up eventually. And don't forget that there's a 7-day unpaid waiting period for SDI anyway, so you wouldn't get paid for the first week regardless.

This is accurate information. The 7-day waiting period applies from the date of disability, not from when the paperwork is processed. So even with the delay in medical certification processing, the OP shouldn't lose any actual benefits they're entitled to. One other important note: While waiting for the medical certification to process, make sure you're still certifying for benefits through your SDI Online account for each two-week period. You can certify even while your claim shows as pending, and this ensures you'll get paid promptly once the medical certification is processed.

When I was on disability for my c-section last year I had similar issues! My doctor's office sent in their paperwork late and then it took FOREVER to show up online. So frustrating!!! Ended up taking almost 3 weeks before I saw anything change in my account!!!

I've seen this happen so many times with pregnancy disability claims specifically. EDD should really improve their processing for these since they KNOW there will be a flood of birth-related claims every day. How did you manage financially while waiting for your claim to process? That's such a vulnerable time to be without income.

I had to deal with this exact situation last month when I went on disability for carpal tunnel surgery. My doctor's office mailed their part and it took about 8-10 business days to appear in my online account. It's absolutely ridiculous how slow their mail processing is in 2025! If you're really worried and can't stand the waiting game, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an actual EDD representative who can check if they've received your doctor's form. I was pulling my hair out waiting and finally used their service (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to call. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep was able to confirm they had received my doctor's paperwork but it was sitting in a processing queue. At least knowing that gave me peace of mind that I wouldn't have to harass my doctor to send it again.

Oh wow, I've never heard of this service before. I've been trying to call EDD for two days with no luck. Does it actually work? I'm desperate to know if they've at least received my doctor's paperwork so I don't have to bug his office to resend it.

Yes, it does work! I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me days of frustration. The EDD rep I spoke with confirmed they had received my paperwork and gave me a rough estimate of when it would be processed. Totally worth it for the peace of mind. They basically connect you directly to an EDD agent so you don't have to deal with the constant busy signals and hangups.

I work in a medical office (not a doctor, just admin) and I can tell you that EDD's process for handling paper forms is incredibly inefficient. When we submit electronically, patients typically see updates within 2-3 days. When we have to mail forms, it's often 7-14 days before they're processed. One important tip: If you're worried, have your doctor's office fax a copy of the form as well. EDD accepts faxed medical certifications, and in my experience, they process faxes faster than mail - usually within 3-5 business days. The fax number should be on the medical certification form itself. Also, make sure your doctor included your full Social Security Number on the form - if it's missing or incomplete, it can cause major delays as EDD struggles to match the paperwork to your claim.

That's really helpful! I'll call my doctor's office tomorrow and see if they can fax a copy too. I didn't know that was an option. And I'll double check with them that they included my full SSN. Thank you so much for these specific tips!

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my doctor's certification FINALLY showed up in my SDI Online account this morning! It took 9 business days from when it was delivered. My claim status has changed from "pending medical certification" to "processing" now. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for the advice and support. Now I just have to wait for the actual payment to process.

Great news! The "processing" status usually moves pretty quickly. You'll probably see a payment issued within 2-3 days. Make sure you've already completed your first certification period if it's been at least two weeks since your disability date.
