Switched from pregnancy SDI to PFL - bizarre payment schedule confusion
I'm completely confused by my PFL payments after finishing my pregnancy disability. My SDI ended on 2/20/2025, so I filed for Paid Family Leave starting 2/21. Everyone told me PFL would take 2-3 weeks to process, but when I checked my account this morning, I already got paid for 2/21 through 2/27 (just 7 days) and the money hit my EDD debit card yesterday! This seems WAY too fast compared to what others experienced. Does PFL pay weekly instead of bi-weekly? I'm trying to budget for rent and utilities but have no idea when to expect the next payment. I've called EDD about 15 times today with no luck getting through. Anyone else experience this super-fast processing with PFL after pregnancy disability? I'm grateful for the quick payment but totally thrown off my budgeting plan!

This is actually normal! When you transition directly from pregnancy SDI to PFL, the process is much faster because they already have all your information verified in the system. PFL payments are issued bi-weekly after the initial payment, which covers the first week. The first payment comes quicker because they're continuing from your existing claim rather than starting from scratch. Your next payment should come approximately two weeks after this first one. They stagger it this way to help new parents with immediate expenses while setting up the regular payment schedule.

•Thank you so much!! That makes so much more sense. I was freaking out thinking there was some kind of mistake and they'd ask for the money back or something. So my next payment should come around 3/13 then? Is there anything I need to do before then, like certify or submit anything?

•That's such a relief to hear! Did you have to do anything between payments or does it just automatically keep coming every 2 weeks?

DONT TRUST EDD!!! Check your payment dates CAREFULLY. I had the same fast first payment for my PFL after pregnancy, then they randomly skipped a payment cycle with NO EXPLANATION. When I finally got through to someone after 3 WEEKS of calling, they said it was a "system flag" that I needed to submit additional documentation that NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT!!! They seriously expect new moms running on no sleep to magically know when they need additional paperwork? The whole system is designed to make us give up on getting the benefits we EARNED. Document everything and keep calling!!!

•Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! Did they at least backpay you for the missing payment once you submitted the documentation? I'm going to screenshot everything just in case.

my sister just had a baby in january and says the payment schedule is super weird at first. something about how they do a 'partial period' payment to get you on the right payment cycle. after that its every two weeks on the same schedule as everyone else. shes back at work now but said it all worked out fine just confusing

If your trying to reach EDD you should check out claimyr.com - it got me through to a real person in about 25 minutes after I spent 3 days trying on my own. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. I was skeptical but it actually worked when I was dealing with my PFL claim issues. The agent confirmed that the initial payment is processed faster when transitioning from pregnancy SDI to PFL, then it switches to a regular bi-weekly schedule.

•Thank you for the tip! I might try this if I need to talk to someone. Did you find the EDD agents were actually helpful once you got through?

•Yes! The agent I spoke with was really helpful and walked me through exactly what to expect with my payment schedule. She also made sure there weren't any issues with my claim that might cause delays. Definitely worth getting through to someone if you're confused.

Let me clarify how PFL payment timing works after pregnancy disability: 1. Your first PFL payment: This is expedited because the system already has your verified information from SDI. This usually covers the first 7-10 days. 2. Regular payment schedule: After the initial payment, PFL switches to a standard bi-weekly payment schedule. The exact dates depend on when your claim was processed. 3. No certification needed: Unlike unemployment, PFL doesn't require bi-weekly certification. Once approved, payments should continue automatically. 4. Benefit calculation: Your weekly benefit amount is the same as your pregnancy disability rate (approximately 60-70% of your wages). 5. Duration tracking: The EDD Online portal should show your remaining PFL balance (up to 8 weeks total). The quicker initial payment is intentionally designed to help parents cover immediate expenses while establishing the regular payment schedule. If you notice any irregular gaps, call EDD immediately as it could indicate an issue with your claim.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! This helps me understand the process much better. I'll keep an eye on my EDD portal to track everything. So relieved to know I don't need to certify like with unemployment - that's one less thing to worry about!

wait.......y'all are getting paid? lol i'm on week 4 of PFL and still haven't seen a dime. maybe i should call them?

•YES CALL THEM RIGHT NOW!!! Something is definitely wrong with your claim. 4 weeks with no payment is NOT normal for PFL. They're hoping you'll just give up!

•Definitely call them! That's way too long to wait. If you can't get through, try that Claimyr service I mentioned above. 4 weeks without payment is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed.

Update: I just checked my EDD account again and it now shows my next payment date scheduled for 2 weeks from now! So you all were right - looks like it's a quick first payment and then bi-weekly after that. Thanks everyone for helping me understand how this works! It's so confusing being a first-time mom dealing with all this paperwork while taking care of a newborn.

•Great news! Glad to hear it's working as expected. And yes, navigating these benefits while caring for a newborn is incredibly challenging. Wishing you all the best with your little one!
