Need help with non-English SDI claim - EDD phone nightmare!

Hey everyone, I need some advice. My mom doesn't speak English and we're trying to figure out what's going on with her disability claim. I tried calling the EDD for her but got stuck on hold forever. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any tips for getting through to a real person or handling non-English claims?

I found a way to solve EDD non-English disability claim issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_QYMFG8cDY

Ugh, the EDD is such a nightmare to deal with! I've been in the same boat with my grandpa. Have you tried looking for translators or community orgs that help with this stuff? Sometimes they have connections or know the best times to call.

Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't thought about community orgs. Do you know any specific ones I could reach out to?

There's a group called [local immigrant rights org] that helped my family. They have volunteers who speak different languages and know the system pretty well. Maybe give them a shot?

Pro tip: I found a way to get someone on the phone without the endless hold times. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

I was skeptical at first too, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

I've used it twice now. It's legit. Just make sure you're ready when they call you back!

$20 to skip the hold time? Sign me up! 🙌 The EDD owes me way more than that in back pay anyway lol

Have you tried calling right when they open? I've had better luck getting through early in the morning.

The language barrier is tough. My cousin had a similar issue and ended up bringing a bilingual friend to translate during the call. It wasn't ideal, but it got the job done. Maybe you could do something similar for your mom?

That's a good idea. I could probably help translate if we can actually get through to someone. Just gotta figure out how to make that happen first 😅

Here's what I know about non-English disability claims with the EDD: 1. The EDD offers services in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean. If your mom speaks one of these, request materials in her language. 2. You can act as an authorized representative for your mom. Fill out the DE 1304 form to do this officially. 3. The EDD has a language line for other languages, but you might need to specifically request it. 4. Be persistent! Sometimes you have to call multiple times to get the right person. 5. Keep detailed records of all calls, letters, and claim numbers. 6. Consider reaching out to your local assembly member's office. They can sometimes help push things along. Hope this helps! Dealing with the EDD can be a real headache, but don't give up!

Wow, this is super helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out. I'll definitely look into the authorized representative form.

Great advice! I'd add that if you go the assembly member route, be prepared with all your info. They can be a huge help but they're often swamped too.

Preach! 🙌 The whole system needs an overhaul. It's 2023, why is everything still so complicated?

Have you checked if there's a local disability advocacy group in your area? They might have resources or volunteers who can help navigate the system, especially for non-English speakers.

idk if this helps, but I found out that the EDD has specific days/times when they have more Spanish-speaking reps available. Might be worth asking about that when you do get through.

Oh really? That would be super helpful. I'll definitely ask about that. Thanks for the tip!
