EDD paid me for wrong disability claim period - new Feb 2025 claim vs old December claim
I'm so confused and need advice ASAP! I just filed a new SDI claim for a two-week medical leave (Feb 1-15, 2025) after a minor surgical procedure. My doctor submitted everything correctly through SDI Online. But when I checked my account yesterday, EDD somehow paid me for 40 DAYS from my previous back injury claim from December 2024 that was already closed! The payment is $4,200 which is way more than I should get for just 2 weeks. I didn't request any extension on my old claim. Has anyone experienced something like this? Should I call EDD to report this mistake or will this automatically fix itself? I'm worried they'll accuse me of fraud or hit me with a huge overpayment notice down the road. What do I do with this money in the meantime???

DON'T SPEND THE MONEY!!!! This exact thing happened to my sister last year. EDD's system sometimes glitches when you have multiple claims close together. They eventually figured it out and sent her a notice demanding ALL the money back plus interest. She spent some of it thinking it was legit and ended up in a payment plan for months. Definitely call them ASAP to sort this out before they hit you with penalties!

•Oh no! That's what I was afraid of. I haven't touched the money yet. I've been trying to call them for two days but can't get through. It just disconnects me after the automated message about high call volume. Any tips on reaching an actual person?

Same thing happened to me in January! They were actually processing a retroactive adjustment on my old claim at the same time my new claim came in. It was super confusing. Did you get any letters or messages in your SDI Online inbox? Sometimes the explanation is there but EDD doesn't make it obvious.

•I checked my inbox and there's nothing explaining this. Just the standard payment notification. Did you have to call them to fix your situation?

This is definitely an EDD system error. What likely happened is that when you filed your new claim, their system incorrectly reopened or extended your December claim instead of processing the new one as separate. The 40-day period suggests they might have automatically applied the maximum extension period to your previous claim. You absolutely need to contact EDD to clarify this situation. Document everything - take screenshots of your payment history, claim status pages, and any notices. Also, set aside that money and don't use it, as it will likely be subject to an overpayment collection once they discover the error. When you speak with a representative, ask them to: 1. Correctly close the December claim extension 2. Ensure your February claim is processed separately 3. Request written confirmation of the correction 4. Get specific instructions on how to return the overpayment Don't wait for this to fix itself - EDD systems rarely self-correct these types of errors.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes sense about them accidentally extending my old claim. I've been taking screenshots of everything. Will definitely set the money aside. I just wish I could get through to someone on the phone!

•Ugh, that sounds frustrating too. How long did it take you to get it resolved?

I've had great success using Claimyr to get through to EDD when dealing with claim issues like this. After trying for days to reach someone at EDD about a similar payment problem, I used their service and got connected to a representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video that shows how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The service basically calls EDD for you and then connects you when they reach an agent. For urgent situations like yours where you need to report an overpayment, it's definitely worth checking out at claimyr.com. The peace of mind from resolving this quickly is worth it.

•Does this actually work? I'm skeptical of any service claiming to get through EDD's phone system. Has anyone else tried this?

•I used it last month when my certification was stuck pending for weeks. Got through in about 30 mins when I'd been trying for days on my own. Saved me a ton of stress.

This confusion between claims is actually quite common with EDD SDI, especially when you have claims close together. Their system sometimes has trouble distinguishing between a new claim and an extension request on an existing claim. First, write a detailed message through your SDI Online account explaining the situation - this creates a record of you reporting the issue promptly. Second, while you're trying to reach them by phone, you can also mail a letter to their overpayment department (yes, old school but effective). Include your claim ID numbers for both claims, the dates of each disability period, and clearly state you received payment for the wrong claim period. The system won't fix this automatically - you need to be proactive. And definitely keep that money untouched in your account until this is resolved. EDD will eventually discover the error during their quarterly reviews if not sooner.

•Thank you for these suggestions! I hadn't thought about writing through the SDI Online message system. I'll do that right now. Do you happen to know the mailing address for the overpayment department?

•The main SDI overpayment address is: Employment Development Department, PO Box 997888, Sacramento, CA 95899-7888. Make sure to write your claim ID number on your letter and any documents you send. I recommend sending it certified mail so you have proof they received it.

•Haha I get it, but I've seen too many horror stories of EDD coming back months later demanding repayment with interest and penalties. Not worth the stress!

•This is exactly why EDD overpayment issues are so problematic. The temptation to keep unexpected funds is understandable, but EDD absolutely will discover the error eventually, and the repercussions can include financial penalties, interest charges, and potential ineligibility for future benefits. Always report overpayments immediately.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! The representative confirmed it was a system error. Apparently when I filed my new claim, the system interpreted it as a request to reopen my December claim and automatically applied a 40-day extension (which I never asked for). They're correcting both claims now - closing the incorrect extension on my old claim and properly processing my February claim. They're sending me instructions for returning the overpayment. Thank you everyone for your help and advice!

•Great news! Glad you got it resolved. Make sure you get written confirmation of this conversation and the corrections they're making. Sometimes different representatives give different information, so having documentation is important.

•How did you finally get through to them? I'm still struggling with my claim issue and can't reach anyone.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. Normally I wouldn't pay for something like that, but after days of trying, I was desperate. Got connected to a rep in about 25 minutes. Worth it to get this resolved before it became a bigger problem!
